By removing a wall, 123 Remodeling designer Renata Malafaia created a brighter, airier open-concept kitchen with ample space for multiple cooks and plenty of storage, many of which had been replaced. Instead of dark, midcentury cupboards and countertops, the new farmhouse-inspired kitchen offers simple, clean lines and lighter, natural colors to continue to make the space seem larger and more breathable.

The old wood-burning fireplace was removed and replaced with a realistic gas unit. The original surround was plain drywall with a traditional mantel, so I chose handmade ceramic tile with a gray glaze that reflects the colors of the Maine coast. Extending the tile to the ceiling creates the impression of higher ceilings, giving the room a more spacious feel. To complete the look, a dark charcoal stone slab offers a clean, modern finish without detracting from the tile.
