Kitchen - mid-century modern kitchen idea in Phoenix

For this kitchen and bath remodel in San Francisco's Cole Valley, our client wanted us to open the kitchen up to the living room and create a new modern feel for all of the remodeled areas. Opening the kitchen to the living area provided a structural challenge as the wall we had to remove was load-bearing and there was a separately owned condo on the floor below. Working closely with a structural engineer, we created a strategy to carry the weight to the exterior walls of the building. In order to do this we had to tear off the entire roof and rebuild it with new structural joists which could span from property line to property line. To achieve a dramatic daylighting effect, we created a slot skylight over the back wall of the kitchen with the beams running through the skylight. Cerulean blue, back-painted glass for the backsplash and a thick waterfall edge for the island add more distinctive touches to this kitchen design. In the master bath we created a sinuous counter edge which tracks its way to the floor to create a curb for the shower. Green tile imported from Morocco adds a pop of color in the shower and a custom built indirect LED lighting cove creates a glow of light around the mirror. Photography by Christopher Stark.

SITE The house is located in Seawatch, a residential development in Seagrove Beach, FL. It is a long and narrow beachfront lot on the Gulf of Mexico, A 30' high sandy cliff meets with the Gulf shore on the lot’s southern edge. A thick layer of sea grasses protects the dunes that create this cliff, helping to prevent erosion and provide a green platform upon which the house sits. PROJECT Two distinct spaces orchestrate the layout of this house. An insular protected courtyard occupies the center of the composition. In contrast, the beach face is comprised of a Living Area, Master Bedroom and Roof Terrace that unfold to the Gulf. The first floor is accessed by a loggia that runs along side the Courtyard. Two guest bedrooms on the south and east, the Garage to the north and a garden wall to the west line the Courtyard. Entry to the main house is by way of a tight enclosed Entry Hall that opens to the curved wall, which addresses the Gulf. Tall slender slots of glass puncture the massive concrete wall of the Living Area. The second floor consists of the Master Bedroom and Study. The massive south wall in the bedroom is articulated as a long horizontal slot, contrasting the vertical windows below. A two-level roof terrace, partly in shade, partly in the sun tops the house. Though the kitchen was only 10 years old, it felt dated and lacked the style the new homeowners desired. The storage was dysfunctional, the window over the small sink did not let in enough light. The existing hood was placed too low and the double ovens where too high making it almost impossible to use the upper oven. The solution was to redesign the kitchen with maximized function and storage while using light colors, transitional details, and clean lines. The tall 57” upper cabinets add a dramatic touch and feature glass inserts to display special pieces and add a touch of ambient lighting to the kitchen. In every drawer and pullout hides accessories and specialized storage compartments to keep the new kitchen organized and efficient. The new island now seats the family of four comfortably. A mixture of brushed and polished stainless steel and nickel accents are sprinkled throughout the kitchen and compliment the custom hammered sink and metal hood each crafted by a local artisan.
