The clients found a second steel cabinet Kitchen out of state with taller upper cabinets than the original and with a lift of the original soffit we were able to combine the original and additional cabinets to create a wonderful and more functional Kitchen. Each cabinet was relocated, painted, and reinstalled. It's hard to imagine that the Kitchen previously featured terra cotta painted cabinets with a pink countertop and backsplash 4x4 tile. The lighting, windows, and many other design details are still original throughout the home. A quintessential 1925 bungalow located in the charming neighborhood of Virginia Highland in Atlanta, this project included a renovation of the kitchen, family room and powder room on the first floor, and the laundry and primary bath on the second. The Copper Sky Design + Remodel team reconfigured the first floor to better accommodate additional cabinetry and an island in the kitchen by borrowing space from what was a full bathroom and converting it to a half bath. Upstairs, unfinished attic space was converted to a roomy laundry room while the 200 square foot primary bath remained in its original footprint.

In the late 50’s, this basement was cut up into a dental office with tiny exam rooms. Red House Custom Building designed a space that could be used as a home gym & media room. Upon demolition, we uncovered an original, structural arch and a wonderful brick foundation that highlighted the home’s original detailing and substantial structure. These were reincorporated into the new design. The arched window on the left was stripped and restored to original working order. The fireplace was one of four original to the home. Harold T. Merriman was the original owner of home, and the homeowners found some of his works on the third floor of the house. He sketched a plat of lots surrounding the property in 1899. At the completion of the project, the homeowners had it framed, and it now hangs in the room above the A/V cabinet. High paneled wainscot in the basement perfectly mimics the late 1800’s, battered paneling found under several wall layers during demo. The piece de resistance of the master bath just might be the over sized freestanding tub. Its generous proportions fit right in with the scale of the space, and whether bathing small children or taking a relaxing soak, it is the place to be. An original artwork by friend and artist Ann Carrington adorns the wall above the tub. Constructed of buttons sewn onto black velvet, the piece is from her Pearly Queens series. The shimmering opalescent buttons catch light from the window, adding a sense of pure luxury to this corner of the room. Beyond the tub is an antique brass candelabra that Cortney has repurposed into a rack for her necklace collection. With respect to the notion of old-meets-new, the kitchen strikes a comfortable balance between materials. For the center island, Franklin repurposed original barn siding into cladding for the unit, painting it grey. The Corian counter top and stainless steel backsplash provide a cool contrast. A set of antique barstools was a fortunate find for the homeowner. Sourced from a local bar that had closed, all they needed was a little elbow grease to realize their full potential. It took days to remove years worth of nicotine stains from them, but as Franklin exclaims, "It was worth it because the old stools found a new home in an old barn!" The partial wall was designed to address a number of functional and aesthetic concerns. Dividing the workspace from the storage space, it keeps the pantry area out of view, and allows light to carry through this area of the home. Franklin also uses the wall as a means to display his growing teapot collection. "It’s funny," he confesses, "but I think they can entice people to sit down, have a cup of tea and converse (Imagine that in this world of technology!)" Adrienne DeRosa Photography

We updated this 1907 two-story family home for re-sale. We added modern design elements and amenities while retaining the home’s original charm in the layout and key details. The aim was to optimize the value of the property for a prospective buyer, within a reasonable budget. New French doors from kitchen and a rear bedroom open out to a new bi-level deck that allows good sight lines, functional outdoor living space, and easy access to a garden full of mature fruit trees. French doors from an upstairs bedroom open out to a private high deck overlooking the garden. The garage has been converted to a family room that opens to the garden. The bathrooms and kitchen were remodeled the kitchen with simple, light, classic materials and contemporary lighting fixtures. New windows and skylights flood the spaces with light. Stained wood windows and doors at the kitchen pick up on the original stained wood of the other living spaces. New redwood picture molding was created for the living room where traces in the plaster suggested that picture molding has originally been. A sweet corner window seat at the living room was restored. At a downstairs bedroom we created a new plate rail and other redwood trim matching the original at the dining room. The original dining room hutch and woodwork were restored and a new mantel built for the fireplace. We built deep shelves into space carved out of the attic next to upstairs bedrooms and added other built-ins for character and usefulness. Storage was created in nooks throughout the house. A small room off the kitchen was set up for efficient laundry and pantry space. We provided the future owner of the house with plans showing design possibilities for expanding the house and creating a master suite with upstairs roof dormers and a small addition downstairs. The proposed design would optimize the house for current use while respecting the original integrity of the house. This house west of Boston was originally designed in 1958 by the great New England modernist, Henry Hoover. He built his own modern home in Lincoln in 1937, the year before the German émigré Walter Gropius built his own world famous house only a few miles away. By the time this 1958 house was built, Hoover had matured as an architect; sensitively adapting the house to the land and incorporating the clients wish to recreate the indoor-outdoor vibe of their previous home in Hawaii. The house is beautifully nestled into its site. The slope of the roof perfectly matches the natural slope of the land. The levels of the house delicately step down the hill avoiding the granite ledge below. The entry stairs also follow the natural grade to an entry hall that is on a mid level between the upper main public rooms and bedrooms below. The living spaces feature a south- facing shed roof that brings the sun deep in to the home. Collaborating closely with the homeowner and general contractor, we freshened up the house by adding radiant heat under the new purple/green natural cleft slate floor.
