Imagine a barn that's also a home, overlooking Boulder's iconic Flatirons. The Boulder Barndominium mixes farm practicality with modern coziness, designed for efficiency and those stunning views that make every day feel special. Client and Brief The owners sought a simple, smart building that saves materials and energy. They wanted light-filled spaces, a west-facing unit for mountain sights, and a patio to relax outside. Problems Solved Energy costs and weather can add up, but solar roofs and clever orientation make it net-zero – using the sun for power and keeping things comfortable without extra bills. Design Concept and Form The concept is straightforward – a long rectangle with sloping roofs for panels, and high windows to bring in daylight. It feels balanced and connected to the land. Construction and Materials Wood framing provides strength and tradition, built to endure while staying budget-friendly. Energy Efficiency Solar arrays power everything, with radiant heating and east/west setup for natural warmth and light – sustainable living that's easy and effective. Interior Design Barn space for work and storage, dwelling with bedroom, bath, and open areas leading to the patio for seamless inside-out flow. Photography by Caryn B. Davis Located in the Cornfield Point area of Old Saybrook along Long Island Sound, this project brought a classic, yet forgotten beach house back to life. Through a little detective work and some creative ingenuity, we restored and enhanced the exterior to it’s former glory and transformed the interior to a highly efficient and functional home all the while uplifting its quaint cottage charm. On the exterior, we recreated a wonderful, airy front porch with cozy bench seats that look out to the water. The white cedar shingle siding is pre-bleached with a subtle flair at the bottom and a delicate break at mid-elevation. The asphalt shingles are not only beautifully matched with the siding, but offer superior reflective qualities to dissipate the heat of the summer sun. On the interior, we joined the front seasonal porch with the family room to form a larger, open living and dining space with paneled walls and ceilings anchored by the original round stone fireplace. In the rear, we carefully crafted a galley kitchen and laundry space with an adjacent first floor master suite. The diminutive house and property posed multiple practical and regulatory challenges which were overcome by a strong team effort, due diligence, and a commitment to the process. John R. It had come to the point of remodeling the kitchen or planning to find a house that better suits them in the next few years. Needless to say, after hearing our vision for them and seeing the walnut cabinetry they couldn’t wait to see the design renderings for their dream kitchen. They pulled out all the stops to ensure there were zero regrets. From the custom range hood to the storage solution that complemented their kitchen lifestyle, to rearranging the layout by removing the angled and wasteful corner sink peninsula so they don’t have to compete with the open dishwasher, to the perfect tile floor that went beautifully with their wood floor in the rest of the house. Shortly after starting their project, we discovered a large empty space under the stairs behind the kitchen wall, so they made it into a walk-in pantry through their now former shallow closet pantry! It was kismet to have everything work so perfectly to expand upon their kitchen remodel, including a simple fix of putting a butcherblock top on their washer and dryer to make more practical use of their space (and for a simple countertop microwave). What can’t come across in these after pictures is how huge and open the space feels now! We couldn’t be happier about creating and installing this dream kitchen for the nicest family.

Several pictures of Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System were taken in Orland Hills, Illinois. Tom have two sons, age 13 and 10 and purchased the hoop for them to practice. Over the past year, their basketball skills have improved significantly and more importantly the Pro Dunk gives their family the opportunity to play together. The dimensions of the playing area on their driveway are 35' x 18'. This is a Pro Dunk Silver Basketball System that was purchased in February of 2012. It was installed on a 35 ft wide by a 18 ft deep playing area in Orland Hills, IL. These well traveled "empty nesters" have created their own tropical oasis to come home to and do plenty of entertaining! This 1980's ranch was transformed into this modern open-concept home with tropical accents and attention to detail. This large open space was divided into a formal living side and a casual kid-friendly side. The casual side is in the foreground where the kids watch TV and practice piano. The formal side is in the background with the fireplace and two large sofas facing each other. The two spaces are linked together by bright colorful accents and streamlined furnishings.

Interior photography is a great photography niche to have skills in, as many companies, real estate agents and publications are always in need of good interior shots. The skill of photographing a room, whether it is in a house or a commercial environment, is one that is practiced principally by professionals who specialize in architectural photography or interior design work. Most people never give much thought to making a room the subject of a photograph. That is a mistake. If your are listing a house for sale or rent, a good photograph of a luxurious living room or dining room might be a great promotion item. Good detailed photographs of a room and its furnishings might come in handy for insurance documentation. And, particularly as we grow older, who would not value a photograph of a childhood bedroom from years gone by?

This beautiful North Vancouver home belongs to a nature-loving and health-conscious couple, Emma and Vince (names changed), their two young children, and their dog, Jasper. When they contacted us about renovating and furnishing their kitchen and family room, we walked in and saw a world of potential waiting to be uncovered. Before: Larkhall Crescent Home: Like many original North Vancouver homes, the interior was definitely dated. We encountered late ‘80s finishes in powder pink and teal green, old carpet, and a kitchen that wasn’t maximized to suit this family’s modern-day lifestyle. However, the size of the rooms offered us a ton of space with which to get creative. Knowing our clients’ love of cooking, need for work spaces (Emma and Vince both work remotely), and growing family, we developed a design concept that would increase usable space, optimize storage, and create intimacy in this large area. As for the style, we were inspired by their European roots, inventing a new and modern take on “Belgian Farmhouse” style. Now, the home is truly one-of-a-kind. After: Warm & Cozy Family Room: Fresh, bright, and comfortable, this living area has been transformed! We started with the fireplace as a focal point, selecting aged brick tiles for added texture and a crisp wood mantle. The taupe-coloured sectional infuses the room with visual warmth and serves the added purpose of separating the family room from the kitchen. Emma and Vince were also keen on using non-toxic materials in their home, and we were happy to oblige. To meet their needs, we sourced natural wood elements and sought out Canadian-made products - that adhere to high health standards - whenever possible. Look closer at the elements of this space, and you will find this stunning, honeycomb-patterned rug in earthy gold, beige, and charcoal tones. It’s plush to the touch and full of visual texture that brings this room’s colour palette together. We sourced these two-tone chairs with caning, petrified wood side table, black sconces, and botanical prints in greyscale from local artist, Heather Johnston. We topped off the space with this dark wood and rattan console that offers storage facing the kitchen and presents an opportunity to display cherished items. The result is a cozy lounging space brimming with comfort and functionality. It’s perfect for enjoying quality family time, or Emma can simply slide the coffee table away to make room for her morning yoga practice. Now, let’s turn around and give some attention to the kitchen. Do you remember what the original kitchen looked like? If not, scroll back up, because the transformation is shocking… Moody & Welcoming Kitchen for Healthy Living: This kitchen looks very different from how it started, right? Though we didn’t touch any walls, the kitchen has almost doubled in usable space! We created a long, extended island with storage, an outlet for small appliances, and seating for comfortable prep, after-school snacking, or mingling among friends. On the other side of the island, the family has even more storage and an integrated dishwasher within easy reach of the sink, perfect for quick clean-up. From this angle, you can also see the expansive custom Shaker cabinetry in white and the integrated double ovens. These facilitate their cooking experience and gave us the opportunity to add an additional surprise… A coffee garage station and more hidden storage! Keeping these items located along the perimeter allows them to be accessed by the family or their guests without someone getting under the cook’s feet. These are the little details that make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. Moving deeper into the kitchen, the seamless induction cooktop topped with a freestanding concealed hood fan commands attention in a soft yet prominent way. The natural wood accent mirrors the fireplace mantle, and the choice of off-black wood-grain cabinets not only continues our black-and-white colour palette but adds a sense of depth and contrast. The corner sink is located to the right and perfectly positioned with a view of their thriving backyard. To invite more of this family’s character into the space, we mixed metals for interest — matte black, dark pewter, and warm brass — and created open shelves in white oak for their plants and decor. You can also glimpse the tumbled edge of the backsplash tile, which echoes the rustic brick of the fireplace. It adds that farmhouse charm while still feeling timeless and sophisticated. Last but not least, we designed this dining banquette in the bay window (with integrated bench storage, of course), where the family can share a meal together, the kids can do homework, or Emma and Vince can work and enjoy a change of scenery from their offices. Like the other spaces in the home, it was designed to be beautiful, multi-functional, and long-lasting. A gorgeous white kitchen was in need of a slight facelift.
