This sustainable project was completed on a private 80 acre view parcel in the hills above Corralitos, CA. The owners were drawn to us through the Green Building link on our website and after an initial meeting, hired us to manage the preliminary feasibility studies, site work, design and eventual construction.
With this type of project, we start at the beginning; making sure that development on the site is both possible and practical before we spend a lot of our client’s budget on plans that may not be suitable. After we determined that building on the property would be permitted by the Santa Cruz County Building and Planning Departments, we completed several feasibility steps that included:
•A geologic review
• Percolation test (for septic)
• Water well probability analysis
• Grading analysis
• Biologic review
• Site survey and topographic mapping
• Earthquake zone and archeological clearances
With these steps finished, we set up interviews with several local architects that we partner with to find the one that was most appealing to our client. The owners were integral to the process and agreed with our choice of Daniel Silvernail, Architect. He impressed the clients with his gracious nature and open attitude; welcoming feedback and the preferences they had throughout the design process. In addition to being very reasonably priced, Mr. Silvernail quickly gave his attention to the preliminary design plans. After client reviews and approval the full architectural and construction blueprints were finished. We had the complete ready-to-submit-for-permit documents in less than 10 weeks; this included structural engineering, energy calculations and Green Building ratings. We were all impressed by his professionalism throughout the design and building process.

From Architect Elizabeth Herrmann:
"Characterized by sculptural, offset boxes, the form of the building is playful in appearance but also practical. The shifting volumes shape interior and exterior spaces. Upper overhangs create much-needed space while enabling us to utilize the old pool house’s foundation. Contrasting siding–two types of charred and pigmented cypress (aka shou sugi ban or yakisugi)– highlights the interplay of forms. Strategically placed large windows frame mountain views, guide with daylight, help define interior nooks, and provide overlooks to the pool area. Two large, sliding doors at the pool side of the house allow for easy indoor/outdoor flow. Integrated fully within the house form is a shaded outdoor grille area with plenty of space for food preparation and serving–neatly tucked away but convenient. Pool equipment and storage are also fully integrated into the structure and out-of-view."

For those looking to bring a modern and luxurious feel to their master bathroom, there are countless options for decor ideas. From rustic country chic to contemporary minimalism, finding something that captures your style is possible. Every design element should be carefully thought through and implemented, from the type of cabinetry you choose and the tiles you lay down for the flooring or walls to small details like lighting fixtures or mirrors. Utilizing functionality and aesthetics in equal measure as well as taking into account practicalities such as ventilation, can all make sure your new sanctuary looks spectacular.

A cedar wood privacy fence is a stunning addition to any property, combining functionality and natural beauty. Crafted from high-quality cedar, known for its durability and resistance to decay, this type of fence offers a warm, rich hue that complements a variety of landscapes. The natural oils in cedar give the wood its distinctive aroma and provide a protective barrier against the elements, helping the fence to withstand harsh weather conditions over time.
Standing tall, a cedar privacy fence typically features closely spaced vertical boards that block the view from outside, ensuring a sense of seclusion and security within your outdoor space. The wood's smooth finish adds an elegant touch, while the option to stain or seal can enhance the grain and protect against fading.
Whether placed around a backyard, garden, or patio, a cedar wood privacy fence fosters an inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect choice for those looking for a serene environment. It also requires minimal maintenance, needing only old cleaning and re-staining to keep it looking its best. Overall, a cedar wood privacy fence is a timeless investment providing tangible and practical benefits.

This house features a glassy connection to the outdoors, with the pitched roof lifting toward the expansive views. Anchoring the living space is a freestanding alcove, surrounded by glass, creating an inglenook for the 6ft direct vent SPARK fireplace.
This alcove is mirrored on the opposite side with folding doors to the outside. The horizontal proportions of the Spark fireplace extend the fireplace across the alcove.
A hearth of bluestone is also the full width of the alcove, providing additional warm seating space. Burnished steel frames the fireplace opening, while cabinetry completes the alcove and hides the TV.
The result is a focus of warmth for family and friends which is visible from the entire space. Practicable on a tight budget; with an accessible internal flow (we're not getting any younger); and Designed to strongly invite and reflect the agricultural land and building types around us. Understanding the need for a quick – and beautiful - way to warm us upon arrival on cold winter days lead us naturally to Spark Modern Fires.

The client’s vision was to create a cohesive look through out their entire home, from the front entry through to the living space.
The exisiting home had great potential but didn’t showcase any of the owners personality. The decor was mismatched, there was no specific interior style or colour palette.
To breath life into the exisiting spaces an earthy colour palette was introduced. To showcase the families love of travel and mid century style a gallery wall was created in the entry and mid century furniture introduced which set the tone for the entire home.
To create a practical yet stylish space attention special attention was paid to type of furniture and decor chosen and the way in which the space flowed.
The end result is a stylish and contemporary family home that reflects the interior style of the owners and what they love most.

This image showcases a sophisticated, L-shaped modular kitchen design, which is a prime example of modern interior aesthetics, focusing on functionality and clean lines. The design incorporates a neutral color palette dominated by shades of grey and white, creating a sleek and minimalist look.
Key features of the kitchen include:
Appliances: A prominent stainless steel double-door refrigerator is seamlessly integrated into the design, alongside a built-in microwave and a hob with an overhead extractor.
Cabinetry and Finishes: The tall units and base cabinets appear to have a high-gloss laminate finish in grey, complemented by lighter wall units. The wall above the counter features a textured, mosaic-style tile cladding, adding visual interest.
Layout and Lighting: The L-shaped layout efficiently utilizes the space, with a practical work triangle between the refrigerator, sink, and cooking area. The ceiling features a modern false ceiling design with cove and accent LED strip lighting, enhancing the ambient glow and highlighting the cabinetry. A contemporary black ceiling fan is also visible.
Countertops and Flooring: The countertops appear to be a dark granite or similar durable material, contrasting with the lighter grey tiled flooring.

Sometimes, only elegance will do. One of the trends listed for pool hardscapes is Travertine and we have used it for some of our clients such as for this pool surround. Cool even in the heat of summer, Travertine is a type of limestone and is quite different from marble or granite. In climates such as the Northeast, with our freeze/thaw conditions, we’ve found that where Travertine is quarried determines how practical it is. More vital Travertine info. www.deckandpatio.com
