A 6,000 square foot 2-story new home complex in Milpitas was designed to facilitate the owners’ large business parties and gatherings, to have rooms for the kids to come back to upstairs, and a ground floor master suite with a huge walk-in closet. Several separate structures make up the dwelling: The main house, 3-car garage with carport for overflow parking, and a separate entertainment and recreation building separated by a courtyard from the main house.
The business activities include gatherings in the hundreds of people, so parking was maximized and guests can flow in through a separate gate to party in the courtyard and recreation building. Inside this structure is a wet bar, billiard room, workout gym and home theater. The main house ground floor has formal and informal living rooms, open kitchen and master suite with views and expansive windows in every direction. The house is sited on the crestline of a hill with views of the San Francisco Bay and private golf course below. The indoor-outdoor aspect of the house is further accentuated with outside living and dining areas.
High ceilings and expansive glass walls dissolve the sense of enclosure taking advantage of the site’s openness and privacy. The owner’s suite is downstairs in anticipation of aging-in-place, and upstairs there are three bedrooms and four bathrooms plus a sitting area lounge and casual TV loft area.
The house sits on one acre at the top of a low hill range overlooking Milpitas. The city was very cognizant of the importance of keeping a low profile at this crestline and required extensive story poles and photo evidence of the proper height and siting so as not to be seen from certain selected vantage points.

This customer ordered unfinished cabinets in solid Paint Grade Hard Maple. They painted them serene Farrow & Ball colors on site and pulled out all the stops on their interior storage. Spice pull-outs, trash pull-outs, a peg plate organizer, and knife block insert keep everything at the homeowner's fingertips. The glass door cabinets add to the light and airy feel, while the custom panel dishwasher and range hood make for a high end aesthetic.

This covered balcony opens from the hall near the 2nd floor family room and provides a cozy sheltered view.
The owners of this New Braunfels house have a love of Spanish Colonial architecture, and were influenced by the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio.
The home elegantly showcases their collection of furniture and artifacts.
Handmade cement tiles are used as stair risers, and beautifully accent the Saltillo tile floor.

A modern mid-century house in the Los Feliz neighborhood of the Hollywood Hills, this was an extensive renovation. The house was brought down to its studs, new foundations poured, and many walls and rooms relocated and resized. The aim was to improve the flow through the house, to make if feel more open and light, and connected to the outside, both literally through a new stair leading to exterior sliding doors, and through new windows along the back that open up to canyon views. photos by Undine Prohl

This clean and classic Northern Westchester kitchen features a mix of colors and finishes. The perimeter of the kitchen including the desk area is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Nordic White with satin chrome hardware. The island features Benjamin Moore’s Blue Toile with satin brass hardware. The focal point of the space is the Cornu Fe range and custom hood in satin black with brass and chrome trim. Crisp white subway tile covers the backwall behind the cooking area and all the way up the sink wall to the ceiling. In place of wall cabinets, the client opted for thick white open shelves on either side of the window above the sink to keep the space more open and airier. Countertops are a mix of Neolith’s Estatuario on the island and Ash Grey marble on the perimeter. Hanging above the island are Circa Lighting’s the “Hicks Large Pendants” by designer Thomas O’Brien; above the dining table is Tom Dixon’s “Fat Pendant”.
Just off of the kitchen is a wet bar conveniently located next to the living area, perfect for entertaining guests. They opted for a contemporary look in the space. The cabinetry is Yosemite Bronzato laminate in a high gloss finish coupled with open glass shelves and a mirrored backsplash. The mirror and the abundance of windows makes the room appear larger than it is.

WKD’s 50 years of combined interior design experience, and specialty in historic architectural millwork, has led to many commissions for custom luxury kitchens. This all white kitchen allows our empty nester- CEO- grandmother to do the cooking she loves to do, while conversing with friends and visiting family and grandchildren. Everything is within a few steps, organized to perfection, and with beautiful finishes to give an upscale look. A former breakfast nook was transformed into a “cocktail lounge” where friends can sit and visit while our client cooks.

Inspiration for a transitional l-shaped medium tone wood floor kitchen remodel in Chicago with shaker cabinets, white cabinets, blue backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

Taking into account the client’s lifestyle, needs and vision, we presented a contemporary design with an industrial converted-warehouse feel inspired by a photo the clients love. The showpiece is the functioning garage door which separates a 3-season room and open deck.
While, officially a 3-season room, additional features were implemented to extend the usability of the space in both hot and cold months. Examples include removable glass and screen panels, power screen at garage door, ceiling fans, a heated tile floor, gas fire pit and a covered grilling station complete with an exterior-grade range hood, gas line and access to both the 3-season room and new mudroom.
