Built in the early 1950s, this small urban townhouse is located in North Old Town Alexandria in an area currently undergoing major redevelopment. The neighborhood is popular with, and affordable for, young people and families, and very convenient to Washington, DC. In its heyday, the townhouse touted a stately brick exterior, plaster walls, tongue and groove wood flooring and beautiful wooden staircase. Sixty years later, however, the homeowners were faced with crumbling masonry, sagging floors, a double layer of wallpaper over the plaster walls, a crumbling staircase, a dysfunctional kitchen and small, dark second floor rooms. Additionally, the basement had a low ceiling, moldy and cinder block walls, no plumbing and a large boiler taking up most of the space. The homeowners’ goal was to restore the exterior’s historic look while creating an interior up-to-date for the 21st Century. To turn their vision into reality, they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes. Design Solutions To maintain the townhome’s historic exterior, the Michael Nash team carefully removed, salvaged, restored and reused existing brick masonry. Matching fascia boards and windows were combined with existing windows to complete the exterior renovation. All interior walls were gutted and reframed. New electrical work, new insulation and new drywall were installed. Much of the home’s original trim was salvaged and reused, as was a piece of art glass, all to keep a bit of the past in the renovation. The sagging subfloors were fixed, new hard wood floors were installed and a new staircase and railing were designed in a style similar to the original. The solid wall between the kitchen and the dining room was removed, plumbing was relocated for a new sink location and the kitchen got expanded with an island into the dining room. Closet and plumbing stacks were relocated to allow a new space for fridge. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and custom cabinetry highlight the new modern kitchen. The plan called for redesigning the three bedrooms on the second floor to allow a larger bathroom, walk-in closet and wider hallways. In addition to new roofing, a large skylight was installed to allow natural light into the bathroom and the upper hallway. The basement was totally revamped. New plumbing was put in place for a full bathroom, laundry room and a den. New e-grass window was installed in the basement to bring this basement up to current building codes. This homeowners love the neighborhood and now their home gives them the opportunity to stay in the same location.

As part of an addition, this master bathroom is awe-inspiring. The homeowner’s requirements seemed simple – a separate soaker tub and shower, honey bronze finishes and a herringbone floor. What seems simple often comes with surprises, in the remodeling industry. In this project, the existing house was out of square more than half an inch. Having an existing structure that much out of square affected the entire addition, but impacted the flooring the most. Requesting a herringbone pattern for the floor added to the challenge. In order to correct the flooring, the two existing inside walls of the bathroom (original to the house) had to be reframed to meet the standards of the new exterior walls of the addition. Our craftsmen also had to plane the crown of the floor joist down, keeping in mind the existing door entry. They had to make sure the flooring would be level with the existing house floor. Using sand and cement as the underlayment for the tile evened the flooring out to accommodate the long tiles. A heated floor was installed before the herringbone tile pattern was created with a large 4 x 12 porcelain tile. The cabinetry and vanities in Wellborn’s Dove Slate color with Honey Bronze finish in cabinet hardware, lighting and mirrors, warms the space with lots of room for storage. A 66” x 36” Sunstruck freestanding tub tucked perfectly under the backyard window, which lets in natural light. The Vicostone Gioia Carrara in polished quartz for the countertops mirrors the floor to finish the room.

Our homeowners purchased this home for its excellent location and great bones. They were desirous of returning it to the era of it’s time while updating and modernizing it with the elegance it deserved. To add to our challenges, they were living out of the country during our design and renovation, making for great communications utilizing modern technology to ensure we could deliver what they hoped to achieve. We opened some space in the kitchen to create an updated and more functional kitchen for this active family, relocating appliances for efficiency, adding an island and relocating a chimney. We had structural challenges with the sagging hardwood floors, which required us to reframe floor systems, and while we were at it, we antique finished the hardwoods reminiscent of the 1940’s. We added wainscoting in the dining room and entry stair hallway to enhance the old-world look and added some arched openings to match other areas of the home. We also added custom moldings to the fireplace wall to allow it to shine as a focal point in the space, utilizing restored antique light fixtures. The finished result is stunning and truly honors the integrity of the original time period of this home.

These clients were looking to add some additional outdoor and indoor spaces to fit their lifestyle. We added this beautiful outdoor Flagstone patio and raised seated wall for their firepit area out back. We built a staircase and landing from the rear doorway down and finished it off with Composite Trex Decking and Wolff Vinyl Railings. On the inside we added a shiplap detail to their TV/FP wall in the family room. Built a storage cubby for the family just inside the entry of the garage. And reframed and finished a new doorway so that they could turn the living room space into a private office when they were ready. But for now, it provided a good way to close the door for sound when the young children were playing in this room.

In this kitchen we demoed the existing flooring and installed new 9x72 Paradigm Odyssey LVP flooring. We put in new alder cabinets finished in White Dove OC-17, paramount doors & drawer fronts. We reframed the pantry to accept new custom pantry cabinet with rollouts. We also added power bars, tray dividers, and floating shelves above the kitchen sink. The kitchen received new quartz countertops and full height backsplash, Amerock Renown cabinet hardware in matte black, new undermount kitchen sink, and new plumbing fixtures. The dry bar has a new base, uppers and floating shelves with quartz countertops to match the kitchen.

The island’s custom Walnut cabinetry, built to resemble a piece of custom furniture, was stained Bronzed Walnut by Sherwin Williams. The 4-foot Galley Workstation in the island, handles all the kitchen’s prep, serving, and cleanup needs. The Galley’s culinary tools include an upper tier cutting board, upper tier drying rack, 2 lower tier platforms, 11″ colander with non-slip handles, and 11” mixing bowl with lid and non-slip bottom. A water tap with reverse osmosis filter provides the highest quality drinking water. The island also houses the Thermador Sapphire 7-Program Dishwasher with a hidden touch control panel and a custom Walnut wood front. The cabinetry under the Galley Workstation features a trash roll out, as well as storage for the culinary tools. Shortening the stairwell wall, and reframing around the stairs, which included shortening the handrail, also made room for a bi-fold door walk-in pantry with extra roll out storage and space for a small microwave. Above the panty doors is a remote controlled, electric motor powered, lift up cabinet door which hides a flat screen TV, used while the family is cooking. To the right of the walk-in pantry is cold food storage. The Thermador, 30-inch Freedom Collection refrigerator and 24-inch built-in freezer column with internal ice maker are covered with matching cabinetry fronts. An open display space was designed above the units, creating an aesthetically beautiful wall. The convention steam oven is a relatively new technology for homes, but its versatility and food quality is amazing. To the right of this is a pull-out appliance pantry which provides easy access and storage for a stand mixer, blender, and any other appliance you do not want to clutter the counter. The most visible wall of the kitchen features the 36-inch Thermador Professional Series Harmony Gas Range with Griddle. Between the range and custom designed wood hood, a framed mosaic tile accent in the backsplash, creates a focal point. To clear the air, the Professional Series Thermador 42-inch ventilation insert provides excellent exhaust capabilities, as well as providing multi-level, vivid LED lights for beautiful illumination. The wall cabinetry symmetrically flanks the custom hood, utilizing deeper wall cabinetry on each end, allowing for storage of oversized dishware. The base cabinetry on this wall is made up of drawers, except for the corner, which is a Kesseböhmer LeMans II. This specially designed shelf system allows ease of access in underutilized blind corners. The dual action articulation system with soft close mechanism ensures a smooth open and close. Rounding the corner to the outside wall, the base cabinetry was built to a narrower depth, providing additional space for the island, as well as easier access to the new larger pass-thru window which serves the screen porch. The client selected Black Vermont granite countertops with an ogee edge to contrast the Linen White painted cabinetry. The door to the screen porch was replaced with a Marvin Exterior Door with a raised panel at the bottom of the 3⁄4 glass door. Marvin Windows replaced the other windows in the space increasing the energy efficiency and value of the home. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made. We redesigned this livingroom with a more contemporary design style with a few custom pieces to complete the look. New furnishings throughout with new custom wall to wall carpeting, to create a beautiful foundation. We added this gorgeous porcelain tile fireplace facade with complementary hearth. This beautiful custom designed/built mantle by Total Home was a gorgeous addition to this facade as it adds some warmth and grounds the fireplace overall. All the original art was reframed for a more modern look. We updated the paint colours and window treatment, and painted the railing black.

This bathroom featured a bathroom divided into two areas, a vanity area and a shower/ toilet room. We we replaced an acrylic shower surround with a custom tile shower. We found a surprise on the exterior wall when we removed the acrylic surround.... termite damage. There were sections of the wall that were literally sawdust! We had to remove the exterior siding and sheathing, reframe the wall and window and install new sheathing and siding before we could move on with the shower. The custom tile shower is a twist on a classic subway tile. We used larger 8" x 20" tiles for the shower wall instead the traditional 3" x 6" size. We completed the shower with a marble bench, recessed niches and a rain head style shower head with a handheld shower wand. We carried the wall tile down the exterior wall to create an accent wall in the toilet area.

This project was done for a professional couple who had two children and a grandchild move back home due to the Pandemic. We helped the family add over 600 SF to their living space that they desperately needed. The home is a brick home built in the 1980s. The area we had to work with was an atrium (We don’t see many of those these days!) and a garage that would be closed in. They needed an additional room & storage space including a mechanical room for the AC that would service this area and expanded office space. The primary difficulties were making the project not look like a closed garage and reframing the roof that had a valley that terminated at the atrium. We were able to raise + level the floor of the garage so that it was equal to the rest of the home. We also matched windows put into the garage to other windows on the front of the house creating design continuity. Often when we do garage conversions, we uncouple the drive way from the house to avoid the closed in garage appearance. Unfortunately, on this project that was not possible because of the need for maximum parking. But with the design consistency, the conversion appears seamless with the house. The roof framing turned out to be more problematic than we had anticipated because the garage roof had been created with trusses whereas the rest of the roof had been traditionally framed. That combined with the open atrium falling in the roof valley made the infill framing a challenge. Ultimately, we were able to fill in the roof over the atrium so that it looks like it was always there. Where there had once been a garage door, there was now a bedroom wall with two large windows. In addition to the two large windows, light-colored paint and flooring also contributed to the brightness of the new space. The bedroom has a walk-in closet with built-in shelving. On the other side, we created a large storage space for the family to use since they no longer have their garage for storage.

A home worthy of Bebb & Gould, this Tudor now sings in concert with its gorgeous PNW landscape to the delight of its green thumbed homeowners. The renovation required a full gut of its interior and a significant amount of roof reframing, vaulting its dining room to Lutyens like splendor, sifting in light to the existing living room with the addition of 6 dormers, and modifying the roof line to accommodate an enviable walk in closet for the primary suite. Additionally, reworked stucco, all new double paned wood & leaded glass windows & doors, and timberframing at the back porches and dining room seamlessly deliver a better “old” with the new. Craftsmanship is celebrated in the smallest details— appropriately understated millwork profiles, all new paneling at the family room with a cast stone fireplace, a spacious new kitchen, and handmade tile at the bathrooms. Yet where needed, modernity pops in the unexpected— such as the handpainted wallpaper and sculptural soapstone sink in the powder room.

The owners of this stately Adams Morgan rowhouse wanted to reconfigure rooms on the two upper levels. Our crews fully gutted and reframed the floors and walls of the front rooms, taking the opportunity of open walls to increase energy-efficiency with spray foam insulation at exposed exterior walls. In the hallways, new ebony wood floors and matching trim contrast with white walls for a classic black and white. The original stairway treads and handrails were also stained ebony to match. In the rooms, the dark floors provide the perfect backdrop for the clients’ colorful art, textiles, and collectibles. Our carpenters refurbished the existing stair railings and balusters. They also reinstalled the operable transoms over interior doors.

This Greek Revival row house in Boerum Hill was previously owned by a local architect who renovated it several times, including the addition of a two-story steel and glass extension at the rear. The new owners came to us seeking to restore the house and its original formality, while adapting it to the modern needs of a family of five. The detailing of the 25 x 36 foot structure had been lost and required some sleuthing into the history of Greek Revival style in historic Brooklyn neighborhoods. In addition to completely re-framing the interior, the house also required a new south-facing brick façade due to significant deterioration. The modern extension was replaced with a more traditionally detailed wood and copper- clad bay, still open to natural light and the garden view without sacrificing comfort. The kitchen was relocated from the first floor to the garden level with an adjacent formal dining room. Both rooms were enlarged from their previous iterations to accommodate weekly dinners with extended family. The kitchen includes a home office and breakfast nook that doubles as a homework station. The cellar level was further excavated to accommodate finished storage space and a playroom where activity can be monitored from the kitchen workspaces. The parlor floor is now reserved for entertaining. New pocket doors can be closed to separate the formal front parlor from the more relaxed back portion, where the family plays games or watches TV together. At the end of the hall, a powder room with brass details, and a luxe bar with antique mirrored backsplash and stone tile flooring, leads to the deck and direct garden access. Because of the property width, the house is able to provide ample space for the interior program within a shorter footprint. This allows the garden to remain expansive, with a small lawn for play, an outdoor food preparation area with a cast-in-place concrete bench, and a place for entertaining towards the rear. The newly designed landscaping will continue to develop, further enhancing the yard’s feeling of escape, and filling-in the views from the kitchen and back parlor above. A less visible, but equally as conscious, addition is a rooftop PV solar array that provides nearly 100% of the daily electrical usage, with the exception of the AC system on hot summer days. The well-appointed interiors connect the traditional backdrop of the home to a youthful take on classic design and functionality. The materials are elegant without being precious, accommodating a young, growing family. Unique colors and patterns provide a feeling of luxury while inviting inhabitants and guests to relax and enjoy this classic Brooklyn brownstone. This project won runner-up in the architecture category for the 2017 NYC&G Innovation in Design Awards and was featured in The American House: 100 Contemporary Homes. Reframe and Expand existing Closet in Primary Bedroom. Install new 3-way Sliding Doors. Refinish the existing Hardwood Floors and Repaint the Bedroom.

This project transformed a lakeside Rockwall cottage with a smart expansion, a refreshed kitchen and bath, and a new 25' x 20' cedar gable patio cover—blending everyday function with warm, Texas-casual style. Inside, we reframed three exterior walls, added a dedicated laundry area, upgraded electrical and lighting, installed new windows, reworked HVAC for balanced airflow, and finished with paint-grade maple cabinetry, quartz counters, new tile, and refinished red-oak hardwoods. Outside, we wrapped the addition in Hardie lap siding and built a stained-cedar patio structure with integrated lighting and fans for four-season living.

This project was completed in 3 different stages and involved a significant portion of the house. Probably the biggest issue was the stairway to 2nd floor. The original home was a farmhouse with a variety of additions and the staircase did not have sufficient headroom to get even a queen size bed up: big problem. Well, we ripped it all open and reframed a beautiful spiral stairs from the 1st floor up to the attic. We love the new bathrooms and kitchens, but the staircase was really challenging and it’s probably our most favourite part of the project. We also built this project for the client while they were living in the Middle East. We appreciated their patience and trust in us while they were away.

The clients had an existing deck and decortive corner pergola structure that was built over 20 years ago by Creative Wood Products. Time and the elements had taken their toll on the structure and some of the decking areas. We replaced the entire corner pergola with one that looked similar with the only changes being to make the structure sturdier for their chain swing that they hang off of it . Rather than have them go through the expense of replacing all of the decking ( which after 20+ years will still in very good shape across the majority of the deck ) we cut off the areas of comprimised wood and reframed the substructure to accept a feature strip at the bay area .
