I installed studs at the exact places, from floor to ceiling, for the installing of a frameless glass shower surround dividing the shower from the tub. I installed a shampoo insert with a shelf for soap, framed in Schluter quarter round satin nickel profile edgings while the shelf has satin nickel L-profile edging. The bench has the Schluter L-profile while the tub surround has the quarter round edging. There is a multi-material mosaic inlay running in 2 bands (1 across 2 walls to include the shampoo insert and 1 running 4 walls around the tub and toilet). The shower pan has 2 inch by 2 inch travertine mosaic.

Originally built in 1890, this downtown Columbus home’s kitchen was a diamond in the rough before R Lucas Construction and Design President Ron Lucas worked his remodeling magic. At some point in the past 20 years, the historic home’s kitchen had been updated; however, the renovation was poorly done. “We began this project by taking the entire space down to the studs. That’s when we found all of the fun,” Ron laughs. “There must have been a fire or perhaps a chimney was open into the attic space above the kitchen, because when we dropped the sheetrock ceilings we had a black dusty mess. The walls were not straight and there was zero insulation.” Before transforming the look and feel of the kitchen, the R Lucas Construction and Design team re-framed walls and spray foamed both the walls and the attic space to make sure the new kitchen would heat and cool better once the job was complete. “The new space was designed to give the young family that lives here room to be together while in the heart of their home.”

Our client contacted us regarding the fireplace he was building in his new home. He decided to be a general contractor and build his house himself, he bought blue prints over the internet. However after framing the home he realized that his fireplace in the main portion of the house was out of proportion . He wanted this fireplace to be the focal point of his home. Client’s Desires: • Larger Fireplace • Wall of Stone • Large Mantel proportion to the size of the fireplace When we first meet our client at his new home, the framing of the fireplace was approx. 6 feet wide and 18 ft. high. After talking to him, we both felt that the fireplace needed to be a lot larger to give that dramatic look, he was looking for. We also suggested, because the wall wrapped into the kitchen that he should have a two sided fireplace with the other side facing his kitchen. We started by re-framing the fireplace to 12.5 feet wide, because of the size we enlarged the insert to 48" opening. We realized when ordering the stone for the fireplace that the weight of the stone was going to be very heavy. When looking at the framing of the house, we got an structural engineer involved to determine the stone weight and beams in the home and that the wall was not a load bearing wall. It was determined that we had to add an additional 6 LVL beams between the two load barring steel beams, to support the weight of the stone. The stone is a 70/30 mix to give it a more rustic look, we wrapped the stone around the wall into the kitchen to give it a beefy look. We had two custom mantels made, the living room mantel is made of alder wood and is 8.5 feet long with a two tier step with custom corbels. The homeowner chose a distress look. The kitchen mantel is more elegant with custom molding to match their kitchen cabinets.

Jill’s primary bathroom needed more than just a facelift. The finishes felt outdated, storage space was lacking, and the layout didn’t offer a relaxing retreat. She wanted a design that was functional every day but also felt fresh and inviting. The old shower was removed down to the studs to create a brand-new custom design. Updated plumbing, waterproofing, and framing prepared the space for a much more durable and attractive setup. Walls were tiled with Bianco Lasa Matte in a vertical straight stack pattern, giving the shower clean lines and a spacious feel. A recessed niche was reframed to a larger size and finished with Blume Deco porcelain tile, creating an eye-catching accent. The shower floor was covered with Snow White recycled glass mosaic, paired with stainless Delta Trinsic fixtures for a cohesive look. A frameless glass enclosure with brushed nickel hardware opened up the room and completed the design. Old cabinetry was replaced with navy blue cabinets from Waypoint. A tall pantry cabinet in the center created more organization, while drawers and additional base cabinets maximized space. MSI Calacatta Alto quartz countertops were installed along with two undermount sinks for a clean, polished look. Delta Trinsic faucets tied in with the shower fixtures, keeping consistency throughout the bathroom. Kohler Essential framed mirrors and Kichler Crosby vanity lights centered over each sink improved balance and lighting. Satin nickel hardware from Elements completed the cabinetry, adding subtle shine against the bold cabinet finish. Carpet was replaced with Blume Deco tile, laid on a diagonal to add personality and connect with the shower niche. The water closet received the same tile, a new Miseno Bella dual-flush toilet, updated Delta accessories, and two new exhaust fans for better comfort.

The owners of this stately Adams Morgan rowhouse wanted to reconfigure rooms on the two upper levels and to create a better layout for the nursery, guest room and au pair bathroom on the second floor. Our crews fully gutted and reframed the floors and walls of the front rooms, taking the opportunity of open walls to increase energy-efficiency with spray foam insulation at exposed exterior walls. On the second floor, our designer was able to create a new bath in what was the sitting area outside the rear bedroom. A door from the hallway opens to the new bedroom/bathroom suite – perfect for guests or an au pair. This bathroom is also in keeping with the crisp black and white theme. The black geometric floor tile has white grout and the classic white subway tile is used again in the shower. The white marble console vanity has a trough-style sink with two faucets. The gold used for the mirror and light fixtures add a touch of shine.

When it came to improving the design and functionality of the dry bar, we borrowed space from the adjoining closet beside the fireplace to gain additional square footage. After reframing the portion of the wall, we were able to start bringing the client’s vision to life—adding floating shelves on either side of the fireplace, and an open shelf for liquor and glassware. The dry bar backsplash features beautiful Carrera and Moonstone Evo Hex tile in polished marble mosaic.

Located six feet from the sand, this residence seeks to reframe the contextual reference of its inhabitants in order to mitigate its highly trafficked location and create a private beach retreat. In parallel to its unobstructed ocean view, the design carves out infinite pockets of nature within the architecture. What was supposed to be a tile repair and new window turned into reframing a wall, new insulation, and doing double the amount of tile. Customer's prior tile work was not waterproofed and there were no tiles along the inside of the window. It did not take long for water to get in and destroy everything. They also wanted a built-in breakfast nook, improved pantry space, more functional storage on either side of their fireplace, and a built-in appearance for the TV above the mantel. The original built-in desk was not used, and they preferred for that space to serve as a small bar area with refrigeration and a place to store their printer. We designed several plans for the space before selecting the final layout. The new design required the removal of the soffit over the old sink, as well as a small wall beside the old refrigerator. The wall beside the stairwell had to be shortened 13 inches and a new beam installed to carry the load of the home’s 2nd story to gain enough space for the large central island. The existing closet pantry walls were also reconfigured as per the new plan. This serves as a great reminder that Dimensions In Wood is much more than just custom cabinets. Central to the entire custom kitchen is an 8-foot Walnut island. The huge island, which comfortably seats three, is topped with Essenza Blue quartzite. The stone’s natural striations are beautiful. Quartzite is harder than granite, and less likely to stain than other stones because of its density. The couple had to look through multiple slabs to find a piece they LOVED. The island’s custom Walnut cabinetry, built to resemble a piece of custom furniture, was stained Bronzed Walnut by Sherwin Williams. The 4-foot Galley Workstation in the island, handles all the kitchen’s prep, serving, and cleanup needs. The Galley’s culinary tools include an upper tier cutting board, upper tier drying rack, 2 lower tier platforms, 11″ colander with non-slip handles, and 11” mixing bowl with lid and non-slip bottom. A water tap with reverse osmosis filter provides the highest quality drinking water. To keep a clean and sleek counter we installed a raised air switch for the garbage disposal and integrated soap dispenser. The island also houses the Thermador Sapphire 7-Program Dishwasher with a hidden touch control panel and a custom Walnut wood front. The cabinetry under the Galley Workstation features a trash roll out, as well as storage for the culinary tools. Shortening the stairwell wall, and reframing around the stairs, which included shortening the handrail, also made room for a bi-fold door walk-in pantry with extra roll out storage and space for a small microwave. Above the panty doors is a remote controlled, electric motor powered, lift up cabinet door which hides a flat screen TV, used while the family is cooking. To the right of the walk-in pantry is cold food storage. The Thermador, 30-inch Freedom Collection refrigerator and 24-inch built-in freezer column with internal ice maker are covered with matching cabinetry fronts. An open display space was designed above the units, creating an aesthetically beautiful wall. To the right of the refrigerator & freezer columns is a tall cabinet designed for the built-in Thermador steam and convection oven. The convention steam oven is a relatively new technology for homes, but its versatility and food quality is amazing. To the right of this is a pull-out appliance pantry which provides easy access and storage for a stand mixer, blender, and any other appliance you do not want to clutter the counter. The most visible wall of the kitchen features the 36-inch Thermador Professional Series Harmony Gas Range with Griddle. Between the range and custom designed wood hood, a framed mosaic tile accent in the backsplash, creates a focal point. To clear the air, the Professional Series Thermador 42-inch ventilation insert provides excellent exhaust capabilities, as well as providing multi-level, vivid LED lights for beautiful illumination. The wall cabinetry symmetrically flanks the custom hood, utilizing deeper wall cabinetry on each end, allowing for storage of oversized dishware. The base cabinetry on this wall is made up of drawers, except for the corner, which is a Kesseböhmer LeMans II. This specially designed shelf system allows ease of access in underutilized blind corners. The dual action articulation system with soft close mechanism ensures a smooth open and close. Rounding the corner to the outside wall, the base cabinetry was built to a narrower depth, providing additional space for the island, as well as easier access to the new larger pass-thru window which serves the screen porch. The client selected Black Vermont granite countertops with an ogee edge to contrast the Linen White painted cabinetry. The door to the screen porch was replaced with a Marvin Exterior Door with a raised panel at the bottom of the 3⁄4 glass door. Marvin Windows replaced the other windows in the space increasing the energy efficiency and value of the home. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made. All of the cabinets were topped with a gorgeous Vittoria white quartz countertop. The Kitchen was then completed with the stand out Grey Glazed Brick backsplash. Finally, the flooring! The home was also updated with a new 12x48 Aequa Tur wood look tile. We created a custom design with this tile at the entry way and transitioned between rooms with a soldier pattern. This is a railing replacement that we had done on a 35 + year old home. The original railing was a bit rotten, so we removed & reframed approx. 90 lineal feet of railing. We then strung just over 450 lineal ft, of stainless steel braided cable with eye hooks and turnbuckles to keep the tension in the cables. The angle braces in the corners are 1/8 inch aluminum that add a bit of strength and a little detail. All the lumber that was used is rated for outdoor use.

This lovely 2-story townhome suffered the effects of more than 120 years of “remuddling” and “modernization” through significant modification of the structural framing. With a large section of a load-bearing wall removed and shear walls, the full 3-story building was structurally compromised. The program included the installation of a steel beam and structural reframing, beginning at the ground floor and through to the 3rd-floor living space. The new structural design allowed for a significantly improved living space. The kitchen was relocated and expanded, as were the living room and dining room. Several upgrades were made to the home, including incorporating all-electrical appliances. 1900 Victorian now boasts several eco-friendly and energy-efficient features.

Our homeowners purchased this home for its excellent location and great bones. They were desirous of returning it to the era of it’s time while updating and modernizing it with the elegance it deserved. To add to our challenges, they were living out of the country during our design and renovation, making for great communications utilizing modern technology to ensure we could deliver what they hoped to achieve. We opened some space in the kitchen to create an updated and more functional kitchen for this active family, relocating appliances for efficiency, adding an island and relocating a chimney. We had structural challenges with the sagging hardwood floors, which required us to reframe floor systems, and while we were at it, we antique finished the hardwoods reminiscent of the 1940’s. We added wainscoting in the dining room and entry stair hallway to enhance the old-world look and added some arched openings to match other areas of the home. We also added custom moldings to the fireplace wall to allow it to shine as a focal point in the space, utilizing restored antique light fixtures. The finished result is stunning and truly honors the integrity of the original time period of this home.

Built in the early 1950s, this small urban townhouse is located in North Old Town Alexandria in an area currently undergoing major redevelopment. The neighborhood is popular with, and affordable for, young people and families, and very convenient to Washington, DC. In its heyday, the townhouse touted a stately brick exterior, plaster walls, tongue and groove wood flooring and beautiful wooden staircase. Sixty years later, however, the homeowners were faced with crumbling masonry, sagging floors, a double layer of wallpaper over the plaster walls, a crumbling staircase, a dysfunctional kitchen and small, dark second floor rooms. Additionally, the basement had a low ceiling, moldy and cinder block walls, no plumbing and a large boiler taking up most of the space. The homeowners’ goal was to restore the exterior’s historic look while creating an interior up-to-date for the 21st Century. To turn their vision into reality, they turned to Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes. Design Solutions To maintain the townhome’s historic exterior, the Michael Nash team carefully removed, salvaged, restored and reused existing brick masonry. Matching fascia boards and windows were combined with existing windows to complete the exterior renovation. All interior walls were gutted and reframed. New electrical work, new insulation and new drywall were installed. Much of the home’s original trim was salvaged and reused, as was a piece of art glass, all to keep a bit of the past in the renovation. The sagging subfloors were fixed, new hard wood floors were installed and a new staircase and railing were designed in a style similar to the original. The solid wall between the kitchen and the dining room was removed, plumbing was relocated for a new sink location and the kitchen got expanded with an island into the dining room. Closet and plumbing stacks were relocated to allow a new space for fridge. Stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and custom cabinetry highlight the new modern kitchen. The plan called for redesigning the three bedrooms on the second floor to allow a larger bathroom, walk-in closet and wider hallways. In addition to new roofing, a large skylight was installed to allow natural light into the bathroom and the upper hallway. The basement was totally revamped. New plumbing was put in place for a full bathroom, laundry room and a den. New e-grass window was installed in the basement to bring this basement up to current building codes. This homeowners love the neighborhood and now their home gives them the opportunity to stay in the same location.
