No greater compliment of a material is possible than when stone is selected for a historic property renovation within a home rich in tradition and with a celebrated past. This new feature stair addition to a private residence in Toronto, Canada, has an equally compelling story to tell.
Originally envisioned as a wall-supported, cantilevered stone stair, the owner boldly accepted a unique solution for their showpiece element. The 19-tread stair would be designed with 550 lb. solid stone treads, and fully
liberated from traditional supports and the adjacent rubble wall. To say, “it would float” is not an exaggeration. The stair would be designed as a monolithic beam spanning 16.5 feet, 10 feet high and 41 inches wide. Aesthetically bold, with a reduced tone from
pure black, the basalt stone was the perfect contrast for the white modern interior of the home. The 3-1/2" tension cables played the most important role by resisting the large bending moment generated by the stone load and stair geometry. Fabrication required precise coordination and care to ensure perfect alignment of the interlocking key, and the corresponding cable holes.
The fabrication challenge was achieving the highest level of accuracy in notching, coring, and replicating each tread identically. Expert precision and skill were key to nesting each tread in sequence and simultaneously with the strands. Meticulous alignment and exacting tolerance assured the true performance and aesthetics were delivered. Hydraulic post-tensioning pulled each cable to 120 kiloNewtons or 27,000 lbs, infusing strength and structural integrity. Removing the temporary support and testing was the last critical step—it was the first time the stone stair would be self-supporting.
The “floating” stair is an ultimate achievement and example of innovation, material strength, fabrication quality, installation precision, and expert coordination. A perfect final chapter to a historical journey and modern ode to stone as structure.

Shingle-style guest cottage addition with garage below and interior connector from the main dining room of an early 1900 existing house.
Sited so that garage entrance and drive works within the existing landscape elevation and orientation, the guest cottage connects directly to the first floor of the main house. This results in an interesting structural dynamic where the walls of the second floor addition are square to the main house, and the lower garage walls corkscrew at a forty-five degree angle to the walls above.
Inspired by their fond memories of travels to the island of Malta, the client requested warm neutral finishes and chose honed cream marble flooring with tight fitting grout lines and an intricate pattern of a Walker Zanger marble tile for the fireplace surround. "Dove White" walls with "Antique White" trim were selected in traditional simplicity to replicate the standard of the existing house and create a seamless transition to the addition. Locally handcrafted copper sconces gently illuminate the space and maintain the period-style of the home.

This 1894 Victorian brick home in Historic Bethlehem, Pa., had elements of the original kitchen — plus the challenge of designing within a 200 sq. ft. space with four doorways and two extra tall windows. Using the existing doors as inspiration, designer Dan Lenner created a custom door and an efficient workspace for the chef owner without losing a door or window.
Custom Classic Cabintery
Custom cabinetry in Cherry with grooved door style to match existing 1894 doors.
The small space and low windows meant fewer base cabinets. Dan maintained the traffic flow and arranges an efficient work triangle by creating a peninsula. The range replaced an existing cabinet. Dan stepped back the cabinet next to the window to avoid blocking it, and built a seat with storage underneath under the second window. The refrigerator fit neatly between the two windows. He extended the countertop for casual dining for three.
Before remodeling, the alcove window was partially covered. The new design includes stepped back cabinetry to expose the window, and added space for appliances, rollouts and a lazy susan for extra storage.
Appliances
Thermidor range, refrigerator, hood and dishwasher. GE microwave.
Countertop & Backsplash
Countertops are “Dreamy Marfil” Caesarstone. Tile is 12” x 12” Stonefire from H. Winter.
Accessories
Blanco sink, Amerock hardware.
Lighting includes toe kick, under-cabinet and in-cabinet.

Bespoke by Acorn created these customised, luxury wardrobes for a bespoke fitted dressing room, in collaboration with MusKox Construction. A firm of high-end property builders working in Wimbledon and Kingston, MusKox partners with master craftspeople like us to deliver bespoke residences of exceptional quality.
The bespoke built-in wardrobes we handcrafted were individually tailored with a variety of separate compartments and hanging rails to fit the homeowners’ exact specifications. The wardrobe interiors have been finished in Egger oak. This reproduction wood texture has a realistic surface that resembles the appearance and feel of natural woodgrain. The chosen graphite shade works well with any colours and materials. Compared to real oak veneer, Eggar oak is highly durable, resistant to scratches, less expensive and easy to maintain. Internally, we also installed integrated full-height LED lighting on the internal sides of each unit.
Externally the doors and drawer fronts and trims have all been veneered in Mundy RRX.86.002. This veneer offers a combination of aesthetics appeal and environmental responsibility. It replicates the look and tactile nature of premium wood yet benefits from enhanced stability and sustainability features. The wood tones and texture bring a calming ambience and timeless elegance to the space.
Each door and drawer front incorporates an integrated handle which gives the wardrobe units a sleek, uncluttered appearance. Integrated handles are easy to wipe clean and eliminate the risk of catching clothing or bumping into a protruding feature.
A stunning feature of these fitted wardrobes is the integrated plinth and shelving lighting which emanates a soft glow as you enter the room. We installed PIR (passive infrared) sensors in the skirting boards to automatically and conveniently activate the lights whenever someone is present. This is also a useful energy addition, as the lights are only on when needed. Skirting board mounting is a discreet and effective way to place PIR sensors, offering a lower profile compared to wall-mounted sensor.
The built-in dressing room also includes a bespoke cushioned storage seat, numerous wide, soft-close drawers and illuminated display shelves for storage baskets and boxes. The result is a luxuriously, streamlined and ordered setting for the Wimbledon homeowners to store their clothing and accessories, with everything fitting perfectly.

Renovating a Victorian townhouse means working with what's already there, exposed brick, original architectural details, and the kind of character that can't be replicated. This two-flight staircase renovation navigates all of it without compromise. The first flight makes a modern statement: solid white oak treads on a central mono steel stringer, vertical square metal balusters, and a clean contemporary rail profile that holds its own against the sun-drenched exposed brick surroundings.
The second flight has more of a traditional feel. Custom fitted around the home's existing historical features, it carries natural white oak treads and handrail alongside white painted risers, warmer and more traditional in feel as it climbs toward the roof. Two flights, two personalities, one staircase that respects where it came from while moving confidently forward.

This four-story townhome in the heart of old town Alexandria, was recently purchased by a family of four.
The outdated galley kitchen with confined spaces, lack of powder room on main level, dropped down ceiling, partition walls, small bathrooms, and the main level laundry were a few of the deficiencies this family wanted to resolve before moving in.
Starting with the top floor, we converted a small bedroom into a master suite, which has an outdoor deck with beautiful view of old town. We reconfigured the space to create a walk-in closet and another separate closet.
We took some space from the old closet and enlarged the master bath to include a bathtub and a walk-in shower. Double floating vanities and hidden toilet space were also added.
The addition of lighting and glass transoms allows light into staircase leading to the lower level.
On the third level is the perfect space for a girl’s bedroom. A new bathroom with walk-in shower and added space from hallway makes it possible to share this bathroom.
A stackable laundry space was added to the hallway, a few steps away from a new study with built in bookcase, French doors, and matching hardwood floors.
The main level was totally revamped. The walls were taken down, floors got built up to add extra insulation, new wide plank hardwood installed throughout, ceiling raised, and a new HVAC was added for three levels.
The storage closet under the steps was converted to a main level powder room, by relocating the electrical panel.
The new kitchen includes a large island with new plumbing for sink, dishwasher, and lots of storage placed in the center of this open kitchen. The south wall is complete with floor to ceiling cabinetry including a home for a new cooktop and stainless-steel range hood, covered with glass tile backsplash.
The dining room wall was taken down to combine the adjacent area with kitchen. The kitchen includes butler style cabinetry, wine fridge and glass cabinets for display. The old living room fireplace was torn down and revamped with a gas fireplace wrapped in stone.
Built-ins added on both ends of the living room gives floor to ceiling space provides ample display space for art. Plenty of lighting fixtures such as led lights, sconces and ceiling fans make this an immaculate remodel.
We added brick veneer on east wall to replicate the historic old character of old town homes.
The open floor plan with seamless wood floor and central kitchen has added warmth and with a desirable entertaining space.

Weathered Antique Paneling from Manomin Resawn Timbers lines the ceiling of this rustic log cabin kitchen, showing off a naturally aged patina with unique sawn faces and a darker, moodier aesthetic. The paneling brings warmth overhead, framing a dramatic curved metal range hood, a live-edge waterfall island, and rows of cross-back bar stools below.
Our Weathered Antique Paneling is sourced directly from 19th or early 20th century barns. As farmers moved from hand hewing logs to circle saw milling, a surplus of timbers became the literal building blocks of the second industrial revolution. After over a hundred years, these timbers still carry their unique sawn faces and naturally aged patina, giving this paneling a look that can't be replicated. Through denailing, kiln drying, and precision milling, we prepare each board for a prominent place in a home like this one.
Whether you are a homebuilder, a home remodeling contractor, or a homeowner shopping for ceiling paneling with real depth and history, Manomin Resawn Timbers has stunning reclaimed wood to suit your needs. Visit our showroom in Hugo, MN or reach out to us with a call or a message to discover the antique charm of reclaimed wood.

This Bryn Mawr PA homes master bath wasn’t lacking in size but it did need some redesign and a new feel. We transformed this bathroom into a sleek marble oasis. Porcelain tile replicates the look of marble without all the down sides of natural marble tile. I love the high sheen finish; it definitely looks spectacular. The large neo angle shower with frameless glass surround and large freestanding soaking tub fit the space perfect. The vanity in Echelon cabinetry Addison door with Dove painted finish blends perfectly with the new look; providing tons of storage and even a special pull out unit to house the hairdryer and curling iron with its own power outlet. The clients selections for all the fixtures and accessories are spot on. This bathroom renovation speaks for itself.
