Arranged around a series of three overlapping courtyards, the building’s primary spaces push and pull to create a wide variety of spatial experiences- solid and void, light and dark, release and compression. Carefully working in close proximity to the heritage oaks, the architecture weaves around and tucks under the sprawling tree canopies. New masonry walls, an extension of the original house, anchor the floating roofs which in turn strategically frame treetop views. A central court, a vestige of the once enclosed sunroom, carves deep into the house, affording each room a unique connection to the outdoors. Photos images: Courtesy of the Homeowners At the end of a dirt road in southern Vermont is a stunning timber and stone residence designed to resemble a small medieval Anglo-Norman manor house originally constructed in the 16th century. According to the owners, a husband and wife with a keen interest in both ancient and modern architecture, the 5,000 sq. ft. home was built slowly over eleven years by highly skilled craftsmen in order to complete all of the authentic hand-planed interior details. The craftsmen then spent an additional two years building the adjacent “ancient“ barn. “We always knew we wanted to take down a delapidated 19th-century hay barn and replace it with something of the period of the house,“ the husband said. The owners designed the barn and began to consider zinc for the roof after looking at northern European architecture and discovering that zinc has been used extensively in Europe for 300 years. Approximately 4,200 sq. ft. of RHEINZINK prePATINA bright rolled Double Lock Standing Seam Roof Panels were utilized to roof the white oak structure. The bright rolled material was selected deliberately in order to achieve the “naturally aged look“ that the owners were seeking. “It’s gone almost immediately to a soft grey which is what we hoped would happen. As the years go by, the color of the weathering white oak and the aging zinc will come together in a dusty grey. Seeing this building in the fog five years from now will feel like seeing a 500-year-old ghost barn floating in the hills of Vermont.“ Installation of the RHEINZINK panels was done by Cold Hollow Contracting, Burlington, VT. “These folks had serious zinc-roofing experience and were clearly the most craft-oriented of all the roofers we met with,“ according to the husband. The main focus was getting an “old look“ as quickly as possible, said Tim Heaghney, co-owner of Cold Hollow Contracting. “That’s really what makes the bright rolled so special—it ages quickly. We fabricated the 28 ft. panels on site and did the flashing fabrication in our shop. Many of the normal sheet metal skills apply to the zinc although we relied heavily on the RHEINZINK installation manual as well as personal support from their technical people. We used a radius cut and fold at the eve termination as opposed to the typical detail used in steel and copper where it‘s just cut at the 90 for the drip edge. The roof was steep but we do a lot of steeples and domes so we’re comfortable working at heights.“ The installers also utilized RHEINZINK’s AIR-Z structured underlayment to provide an air-gap behind the zinc. The Shoshone residence is envisioned as a monumental limestone volume that will house an eclectic collection of art and sculpture. The project examines unique lighting conditions throughout the day by utilizing a series of curved light scoops to direct and filter the illumination. These light scoops vary in size and shape in order to materialize a distinct set of experiences throughout the residence. The project rises three stories connecting the ground level neighboring community gardens to the city-wide panorama from the roof deck above. The vertical circulation linking these moments is contained within the largest light scoop monitor.

Hidden away amidst the wilderness in the outskirts of the central province of Sri Lanka, is a modern take of a lightweight timber Eco-Cottage consisting of 2 living levels. The cottage takes up a mere footprint of 500 square feet of land, and the structure is raised above ground level and held by stilts, reducing the disturbance to the fauna and flora. The entrance to the cottage is across a suspended timber bridge hanging over the ground cover. The timber planks are spaced apart to give a delicate view of the green living belt below. Even though an H-iron framework is used for the formation of the shell, it is finished with earthy toned materials such as timber flooring, timber cladded ceiling and trellis, feature rock walls and a hay-thatched roof. The bedroom and the open washroom is placed on the ground level closer to the natural ground cover filled with delicate living things to make the sleeper or the user of the space feel more in one with nature, and the use of sheer glass around the bedroom further enhances the experience of living outdoors with the luxuries of indoor living. The living and dining spaces are on the upper deck level. The steep set roof hangs over the spaces giving ample shelter underneath. The living room and dining spaces are fully open to nature with a minimal handrail to determine the usable space from the outdoors. The cottage is lit up by the use of floor lanterns made up of pale cloth, again maintaining the minimal disturbance to the surroundings.

SHINGLE ROOF REPLACEMENT Northmen Roofing, as a “specialty” roofing contractor, tackles the most difficult waterproofing challenges on a daily basis and we pride ourselves on the ability to extend the life of a roof system for maximum comfort and value. Unfortunately, not all roofs can be repaired and sometimes it’s simply time for a full roof replacement. Some fail due to poor installation or materials but in most cases the Florida sun and rain is enough to weather a roof faster than any geography in the county with the cost/risk associated with a repair being prohibitive. This particular shingle re-roof, using CertainTeed Landmark shingles, was completed in beautiful Winter Park, FL. Utilizing our in house metal fabrication custom brick step flashings and dark drip edge metals were fabricated to match the metal panels installed on the awnings giving this property a wonderful custom look and feel. The dead valley was expertly treated to prevent leaks in the most vulnerable part of the roof system. Valleys are treated with metal and self adhesive underlayment exceeding Florida building code. From coffered ceilings and custom trim to handcrafted details that our experienced team of carpenters executed from scratch, this home truly exudes the comforts of coastal living.

Built in 1930, the home, a magnificent reproduction of the Georgian architectural style, was situated on a large property with mature landscaping, pool, and river views. The clients commissioned JRML to design a screened porch, requesting that the design harmonize with the existing architecture. The existing home featured a flat-roofed sun porch on its left side. For contrast, we decided on a gabled roof to enhance the effect of perspective from the oblique driveway approach, and natural lighting using skylights. Two wood-clad steel beams enabled the roof to span the entire length without interior support. For harmony, we painted the plywood white to match the existing sun porch, and for cost, limited the masonry to a skirt with exaggerated pilasters. For rhythm and variety, we introduced the arches into the linear composition of the false window band. The interior featured complementary millwork details. Removable screened panels with false meeting rails mimic windows. The beaded paneling expresses the ceiling’s linearity. Stamped concrete was specified for the floor for easy cleaning. The white interior of the screened porch allows the landscaping, pool, and water views to support the outdoor experience.
