Working from the existing home’s deficits, we designed a bright and classic home well-suited to today’s living. Instead of a dark tunnel-like entry, we have a skylight custom curving stair that no one can believe is not original. Instead of a maze of rooms to reach the gorgeous park-like backyard, we have a clear central axis, allowing a sightline right through from the top of the stairs. Instead of three bedrooms scattered all over the house, we have zoned them to the second floor, each well-proportioned with a true master suite. Painted wood paneling, face-frame cabinets, box-beam beilings and Calacatta counters express the classic grandeur of the home.

THE SETUP When we first encountered this basement for a family with three boys, we saw a space with untapped potential. Though previously remodeled, it lacked a cohesive design strategy. The expansive area housed various entertainment pieces (a shuffleboard table, air hockey, foosball, etc.) scattered haphazardly throughout the space. While the basement included a workout room and a rudimentary kitchen area, it lacked a dedicated game room or proper bar. Excessive storage closets along the back wall consumed valuable real estate that could be repurposed for more engaging uses. In essence, the basement was spacious but disjointed—functional for family use but falling short as an entertainment hub. It didn’t align with the sophistication of the rest of the home. Our clients envisioned a transformation: a fresh, organized space that would not only serve their family’s needs but also shine as an inviting arena for entertaining friends and hosting gatherings – especially sports-focused gatherings! Design Objectives: Reimagine the basement layout, creating distinct zones for varied activities. Expand the workout area to accommodate new equipment, including a Smith machine. Implement a multi-screen setup inspired by high-end sports bars, allowing guests to follow multiple games while socializing. Enhance existing features while developing new areas: Optimize a workout space for all equipment needs Establish a dedicated children’s space with guest room capabilities Create an integrated bar and entertainment area Retain and incorporate the existing projector setup Design Challenges: Navigate layout constraints in the new workout room due to fixed utility areas. Work around immovable structural elements (soffits, load-bearing support columns) THE RENEWED SPACE Design Solutions: Install a stylish barn door for the utility area of the new workout space, improving aesthetics and accessibility. Repurpose the former workout room into a dedicated game room for kids, utilizing couches with pull-out beds so the area can double as overflow guest accommodations. Transform the unused area into a vibrant pub-style area for card and table games. Enhance the big screen area with elegant wainscoting and ambient theatre-style lighting. Design a multi-functional wet bar area featuring varied seating, prep areas, and a microwave. Base the bar sink area width off the soffit above it. In the big screen area, use the soffit to inform the width of a wainscoting section. For the immovable support columns, dress one up to match the wainscoting of the nearby big screen wall. Hide the other one in a new wall. Final Thoughts: The reimagined basement has exceeded our clients’ expectations, evolving into the ultimate entertainment hub. With seven strategically placed screens, it’s perfect for gatherings focused on major sporting events and casual gatherings, as well. The space strikes a balance between adult sophistication and family-friendly functionality, featuring distinct zones for various activities. The new design not only maximizes functionality for modern, multi-screen entertainment but also elevates the aesthetic appeal. The "blue hour" is that magical time of day when sunlight scatters and the sky becomes a deep shade of blue. For this Mediterranean-style Sea Cliff home from the 1920s, we took our design inspiration from the twilight period that inspired artists and photographers. The living room features moody blues and neutral shades on the main floor. We selected contemporary furnishings and modern art for this active family of five. An antique Indian bench made from oxcarts and layered with colorful pillows, transforms this urban New York apartment into a vibrant, energetic space. Block printed cotton throws are scattered on the sofas and an antique triple arch graces the main wall of the living room. Unique architectural remnants and paintings are the focus and give a pop of color against the white wall. A huge brass cladded hope chest sits in the foyer and is useful to store extra blankets.

This project began with a simple request: “I want something that feels alive.” Our client loved natural wood but wanted a piece that didn’t feel traditional — something sculptural, emotional, and deeply personal. That’s how this custom epoxy coffee table came to life. We selected black walnut with dramatic grain patterns and raw textures. The tabletop’s silhouette is hand-cut with intentional curves — not a live edge, but shaped to echo the tree’s natural flow. Each line is carved to respect the wood’s original patterns, allowing the grain to guide the form. This way, the design feels organic without losing precision. The resin is poured in a deep, reflective black, scattered with subtle white speckles, creating a galaxy-like contrast against the warm walnut. In certain lights, it almost feels like stargazing. This traditional, clean, and trendy New York City kitchen, designed by Bilotta’s Tabitha Tepe, is situated in a loft in lower Manhattan. The kitchen, with touches of both silver and gold, features Bilotta Collection Cabinetry in a frameless full overlay door with step profile. The perimeter is painted in a soft gray color with glass fronts on the wall cabinets and the island is walnut with a stain. The high ceilings, tall windows, and open design make it a bright and airy space, not stuffy as some NYC apartments can be. The ceiling is painted white but still has the raw element of the exposed pipes. Touches of gold are scattered throughout the space including the hardware by Hafele and inside the pendant shades hanging above the island by Linden Rose & Co. The stainless steel hood and range, by Miele are surrounded by Artistic Tile’s Jazz Glass mosaic backsplash in gray and white. The Miele dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator are paneled to keep the clean feel. Countertops are Imperial Danby marble by Romstone. And last but not least the entire wall running parallel to the island, is in white brick. Instead of covering it up the client decided to keep it in place and mount shelves where they added some earthy accessories like plants and olive wood cutting boards to complete this loft kitchen. The stunning Asian artwork influenced our colour choices for both the sofa bed and toss cushions in this living room. Velvet and linen were just some of the luxurious fabrics selected. The carved mahogany table adds curves to an otherwise linear look.

The pool has benches attached to the wedding cake stairs. The coping on the hot tub and pool is Bluestone, as is the decking. There are natural boulders scattered around the perimeter of the pool.
