The hall was small and as such incorporated a small bench to the left of the door and a small scale cabinet that had sentimental value that we refinished at the entrance that doubled as much needed storage.

It was a very small kitchen in a 100 years old house.
We have removed a load bearing wall separating Kitchen from Dining Rm.
We closed off existing window to allow more cabinetry and relocated the sink and HVAC feeding upstairs. Exterior walls were insulated, windows and doors replaced.
Part of this project was refinishing of stairs and all existing trim (baseboards and casings). We tried to combine modern design with original trim that had sentimental value to our client. Kitchen cabinets were custom built.
We had many challenges working on this project starting from repairing sagged floors and asbestos removal to saving existing trim and relocating existing heating that was feeding upstairs.
It was well worth the effort because the result is a big and beautiful Kitchen and renovated main floor.

Go for it! We just love it when clients are open to making a statement and have no fear of being bold and getting their graphic on! This funky chevron style porcelain plank from Spec Ceramics stands on it's own and is adorned with a live edge wood mantle that was salvaged from a downed tree on the property. Giving spaces their own family story and bringing in the sentimental is key to making your house a home.

Joseph Macaya designed and executed with the assistance of Karen La Du for
La Du's Art Studio. The themes of her art from many years work and the sentimentality of this her childhood homestead come together with the superior craftsmanship, design and artisan skills of Joseph Macaya.

All wrapped up with our projects over here in Sausalito. Another great collaboration with @apartment46 and her stellar eye for bringing various components together in harmony.
The barn door was a special challenge; our client wanted to be able to lock the door that leads to the master bedroom upstairs. We used a pocket door lock by cavilock- the CL400, which uses a magnetically activated catch and plunger system for the lock. You can hear it in the video. Such a satisfying “click”. I built the jamb for the barn door to slide into, and for the lock to engage with. Sort of a unique setup for a barn door.
@gregdlaird built the door, the shelves, and the lower cabinet. The shelves have L.E.D. Strip lights mounted in a housing, routed into the bottom of each shelf, flush. They operate by a dimmer switch on right alcove wall.
The bronze screens in the doors are the same we used on a previous project. I think they really complement the walnut on these cabinets.
Finally, I built the mantle from 16/4 solid black walnut. Our client made a very special and sentimental request for 3 stars to be inlaid into the mantle top. It was a chance for me to do a little finer bit of woodworking that seems more rare these days in our work. We chose Osage Orange for the wood inlay. In time, the bright yellow color of that wood will richen to a beautiful amber color. It was a real joy to do such a special, personal bit of work for a great client.

A clinic in downsizing, this condo is filled with pieces and art that were carefully selected, sentimental and one of a kind. The renovation was intended to stand the test of time, functionally and aesthetically. Having relocated from a much larger property, the client wanted a space that resonated with the urban beauty of Portland's West End. Photos by Erin Little.

This client had a house that was out dated and out of space, but the house had a ton of sentimental value (and beyond beautiful farm property) and decided to build on an addition instead of move. We encompassed the kitchen and dining space which lead out to a stunning wrap around porch that has views of the fields. This space is the heart of the home and was even housing new ducklings. The overall project was absolutely gorgeous!

With sweeping views of the Willamette river and Mt. Hood, this Atwater Place condo was designed with a balance of minimalism and livability in mind. A complete kitchen remodel brought a dark interior kitchen to the light and a full furnishings package welcomed Los Angeles transplants home to their new modern and bright residence. Our clients, a retired camera operator for both feature films and television and a producer/production manager on numerous television series including Weeds and The Middle, relocated from their traditionally-styled LA bungalow to Portland in the Summer of 2014. The couple sought a design departure from their long-term California residence and a fresh start for their new life in the South Waterfront.
With only two pieces of sentimental furniture and a handful of artwork included in the plan, we set out to create a comfortable and clean-lined furnishings package complimenting the broad southeast views. Organically shaped upholstery pieces juxtaposed with angular steel and wood tables create a soft balance in the open floor plan. Several custom pieces, including a dining table designed by our studio and a custom hand-blown glass chandelier crafted by Scott Schiesel with Lightlite compliment timeless pieces from Knoll, Herman Miller, and B&B Italia.
The kitchen is designed to reflect light and create brilliance in a space that is otherwise naturally dark. A material balance of stainless steel, back painted glass, quartz composite, lacquer, and mirror all play their part in creating a vibrant cooking environment. We collectively decided to forgo the traditional island pendant for a linear commercial fixture that provides tremendous light to the prep surface and creates an unexpected architectural element. The mirrored prep island creates the illusion of open space while concealing casework and wine storage on the working side of the kitchen.
It is worth noting that this project was designed and installed almost entirely while our clients were still living in LA and wrapping up professional obligations and selling their home. This afforded us the tremendous opportunity to send our clients to showrooms not available in Portland to view key pieces before final specification. Textiles and finish samples were approved via mail and communication took place over e-mail, telephone, and an occasional office visit. This unique process lead to a successful result and a beautifully balanced living environment.

Located on a picturesque setting on Lake Minnetonka, this lakefront home masterfully balances contemporary and traditional sentiments, striving not to design to either extreme.
With team collaboration intentions to combine both form and function — and an eye on simple, beautiful and comfortable solutions, this relaxed elegant design approach honors lakeside living that permeates the residence. This Streeter home also blends in beautifully with surrounding classic lake homes that are reminiscent of timeless architecture and craftsmanship found in Europe and Nantucket.

This two-tone kitchen features two popular shaker style doors, the Rosemary and the Brookside. Drawer fronts have our 5-piece header option, bringing a touch of traditional sentiment to the space. A soft, dark stain is used for the island, contrasting with the stark white perimeter. This effect defines the space, dividing the living area and kitchen while maintaining an open and airy feel.

The island countertop support legs were harvested from an old table that was passed down from the homeowner’s great grandfather. They were modified to support the island counter and were then refinished to match the cabinetry

We spend a lot of time and money when picking out the perfect furniture for our outdoor living areas. There is often a sentimental attachment to these items. Over time, cushions become soiled or discolored, but can be refreshed with a thorough cleaning. It is a priority to properly maintain these treasures.
