Rustic and refined meet to give a mountaintop home in Portola Valley, California, classic charm. They say the best things in life come to those who wait. So when a Bay Area couple purchased a rare set of adjoining lots overlooking Windy Hill in Portola Valley, they made frequent visits to the site where they absorbed the views while listening to the land as they contemplated building a home there. The intent: to create a home that would celebrate the scenic beauty of the San Mateo County region. Long before the design process began, the couple committed themselves to preserving as many trees on the land as possible. These trees, two majestic, centuries-old Blue Oaks in particular, ultimately became the impetus for the home’s orientation and the inspiration for its design. Detailed discussions and brainstorming sessions led the owners to discover their own unique tastes: “cozy” and “rustic“ while “contemporary, but not minimal.” The result? Sophisticated style comprised of simple, honest materials.

Designed for a family with quirky and artistic values, the Wood Be New Again [WBNA] Residence is a renovation project where our team tried to integrate the family’s values of art and recycling together with actual recovered materials from their original house. In tackling the project, our team positioned multiple family areas in the house that are visually linked with one another. The living area greets guests as they enter the home while the private family area at the second floor overlooks the ground floor. A glass panel on the roof provides visual connection between the interiors of the house to their roof deck that the family requested for their stargazing sessions. Our team also allowed natural daylight to shower the interiors of the house through strategic placement of roof openings and glass roof panels. Lastly, wood plays an integral part in the overall aesthetic to highlight the family’s connection with nature. This is achieved by repurposing and the integrating recycled wood and walls from their old house into the new design.

This is a huge project with multilevel hardwood decks complete with stainless steel cable railing, hot tub, outdoor heaters, lights and our patented under deck ceiling system. Our system creates a dry usable space under the upper-level deck that allows you to put in heaters, patio furniture and supplies cover for your hot tub sessions.

This roof makeover was completed in 2016. We wanted to enhance the exterior warm neutral colors of this beautiful house by adding a DaVinci Bellaforte shake roof in gray. The exterior of this stunning house was finished in 2017. The homeowners and designer did a wonderful job by selecting all the right colors, materials and accents for this project. New and freshly painted neutral siding and garage doors set the perfect backdrop for the rest of the remodeling of this exterior. The beautiful corbels on the gables, the stunning light fixture and red vibrant entry doors that coordinate perfectly with the brick on the walls makes this inspiring exterior design just perfect. Well-traveled. Relaxed. Timeless. Our well-traveled clients were soon-to-be empty nesters when they approached us for help reimagining their Presidio Heights home. The expansive Spanish-Revival residence originally constructed in 1908 had been substantially renovated 8 year prior, but needed some adaptations to better suit the needs of a family with three college-bound teens. We evolved the space to be a bright, relaxed reflection of the family’s time together, revising the function and layout of the ground-floor rooms and filling them with casual, comfortable furnishings and artifacts collected abroad. One of the key changes we made to the space plan was to eliminate the formal dining room and transform an area off the kitchen into a casual gathering spot for our clients and their children. The expandable table and coffee/wine bar means the room can handle large dinner parties and small study sessions with similar ease. The family room was relocated from a lower level to be more central part of the main floor, encouraging more quality family time, and freeing up space for a spacious home gym. In the living room, lounge-worthy upholstery grounds the space, encouraging a relaxed and effortless West Coast vibe. Exposed wood beams recall the original Spanish-influence, but feel updated and fresh in a light wood stain. Throughout the entry and main floor, found artifacts punctate the softer textures — ceramics from New Mexico, religious sculpture from Asia and a quirky wall-mounted phone that belonged to our client’s grandmother.
