When asked to design a beautiful landscape that functions for all ages and occasions, yet doubles as a natural adventure playground - in the heart of Chicago - you might be forgiven for taking a deep gulp. But that’s exactly what we did. In this picture, you get a framed glimpse of the adventure, with a winding woodland path taking you over the frog guarded pond’s stepping stones, through the rustic serpentine wall, and into the formal lawn clearing beyond. Did we mention that this is the only way to get there?

This garden was designed to celebrate panoramic views of the San Gabriel mountains. Horizontal bands of slate tile from the interior of the mid-century home wrap around the house’s perimeter and extend to the rear pool area, inviting the family outdoors. With a pool framed by mature trees, a sunken seating area, fruit trees, and a modest lawn for a young family, the landscape provides a wide range of opportunities for play, entertaining and relaxation.

The design brief for this garden was to create an inviting entry with a woodland feel that would complement the home's earthy color scheme and thoughtful architectural details. Majestic Sequoia sempervirens 'Aptos Blue' (Aptos Blue Coastal Redwood), with its pendant deep blue-green branches, shields the expanded porch from the afternoon sun. Selected for its ability to look good in sun or shade, Carex divulsa (Berkeley sedge) makes a lush ground cover, weaving through the trees and along the new slate walk. In fall, muhlenbergia capillaris explodes with feathery pink plumes.

Pruned Weeping Canadian Hemlock brings color to garage's "blank canvas" side. Situated in backyard of this Long Island home, this focal point dazzles the eye with its unique charm. Just the "bling" that this site needed!

Semi-circle of linden trees planted with surrounding garden beds of shade loving hostas, ferns and Solomon's seal.
Where the lindens end the walking garden begins and the plantings transition to part-shade astilbe, purple coral bells, hosta, bleeding hearts and foxglove (Digitalis)
