Salt + Dirt | Outside DesignPrior to our start, the Client hired a lawn company to mow the 4 acres that weren't horse pasture. Each week, pasture grasses, which "blade out" at about 6-8", were mowed to 3" All that remained were the stalks. This left the property scalped, brown and heading south.
We developed a grass management plan to do several things: increase vigor; green it up; and carve a site composition into the landscape. What you see here blends gorgeously with those mountains beyond. There is no artificial separation.
Over time, mowed areas were allowed to grow through the summer, which encouraged seasonal change through naturally-occurring and introduced wildflowers, forbes and shrubs. From spring green up through the autumn, the landscape slowly evolved from dormancy to seas of waving grass embracing the different aspects of the landscape. It was breathtaking. It also significantly reduced lawn maintenance costs.

Jennifer Harkey StudioWarm Organics was my solution for a limited use of color challenge. Recycled glass is limited in color as it is, but when this client challenged me to only use greens, ambers, browns and clear for their front door sidelight design, I accepted.
I set out to reflect the clients love of gardening and to create a piece that could easily flow with their interior design of warm tones, traditional ivy wall paper and oak floors; while bringing their garden in all year round. My vision of a growing/moving green stalk toned with swirls of amber and surrounded with cool clear pools took shape and is greatly loved by my client.

Ecoscape Environmental DesignThe Munstead lavendar is a hardy compact perennial shrub that produces fragrant dark purple spikes, and stays green year round. The 'Penstemon Mexacali' in the foreground of the photo puts out red-purple pollinator-friendly blooms nearly all summer long, which for a perennial wild flower, is a huge bonus. When the bushy prairie sunflowers finally lose the last of its' petals in fall, the remaining seed centers serve as bird forage and winter interest. Frosty snow mantles coat dried out stalks of prairie grasses and perennials, providing the perfect place for dancing sparkles in the sunshine to land. Color in the landscape is always there to see, you just have t be open to seeing it!

Home & Garden Design, Atlanta - Danna Cain, ASLAWe really wanted to encourage the children to play with the plants. This youngster discovers that the huge elephant ear leaves make a great umbrella for a sudden summer shower. Other plants such as stalks from canna make great (soft & safe) "weapons" for sword fights. The kids are also encouraged to pick the flowers, smell them, dissect them, and of course, bring bouquets inside for Mom.

The perspective is to be the flower and stalk, etc. The customer has selected a field tile and the size of the mosaic is to be 23" X 26" which leaves about a 3" border all the way around. It's also key to determine where in the space it will go, ensuring that it's visible from as many angles as possible.
