Inspiration for a mid-sized timeless backyard stone and custom-shaped natural hot tub remodel in Austin

The client wanted a better flow throughout their landscape, as well as introduce straight lines to a space to modernize the irregular shaped pool. Their upper deck was where they did a majority of their entertaining so ensuring this space was large enough for both dining and lounge was the starting point of the design. Introducing privacy from the many on looking neighbours, without completely blocking it off from the rest of their own yard was important. Laser cut privacy screens added this filtered privacy. A round hot tub was added to the back corner of the property, which otherwise seemed like wasted space. Highlighted by the privacy panels in the same pattern used on the deck to create some consistency. Trees were both maintained and added where needs along the property to add greenery and privacy. The entire space now feels open within the backyard, but private from neighbours.

Neighbors knew this house as the "spooky" house on the block because of its overgrown front yard. I removed all the brush and sliced an opening through the existing stone garden wall. I designed a modern, geometric stamped concrete entry walk to lead your eye front to the front entry door. K. Dakin Design won the 2018 CARE award from the Custom Builder and Remodeler Council of Denver for the reimagination of the landscape around this classic organic-modernist home designed by Charles Haertling. The landscape design is inspired by the original home and it’s materials, especially the distinct, clean lines of the architecture and the natural, stone veneer found on the house and landscape walls. The outlines of garden beds, a small patio and a water feature reiterate the home’s straight walls juxtaposed against rough, irregular stone facades and details. This sensitivity to the architecture is clearly seen in the triangular shapes balanced with curved forms. The clients, a couple with busy lives, wanted a simple landscape with lawn for their dogs to fetch balls. The amenities they desired were a spa, vegetable beds, fire pit, and a water feature. They wanted to soften the tall, site walls with plant material. All the material, such as the discarded, stone veneer and left-over, flagstone paving was recycled into new edging around garden areas, new flagstone paths, and a water feature. The front entry walk was inspired by a walkway at Gunnar Asplund’s cemetary in Sweden. All plant material, aside from the turf, was low water, native or climate appropriate. Dear Garden Associates worked closely with the homeowner and builder to create gardens that reflect the homeowner’s taste and compliment the architecture of the home. Curving boulder walls were installed throughout the gardens to create a series of terraces, address grading issues, and protecting large trees. Pathways and steps of large irregular flagstone provide access around the home and through various gardens of fragrant seasonal plantings. Path and tree lights extend the use of the gardens into the night, but do not overpower the night experience. A terrace with a fireplace and water feature was constructed to appear as old ruins and to provide destination away from the home.
