The living room in a townhouse in central den Haag exhibits an eclectic mix, combining a contemporary Italian, classic French and American mid-Century modern furnishings in a subdued envelope of color producing an atmosphere of spare elegance and timeless luxury. Walls were painted Farrow & Ball Cornforth White, a pale and chalky gray, to compliment the 1940's French armchairs covered in gray Belgian linen.

A masterclass in compact luxury and textural contrast. Suspended as a floating wall-mount basin, this 20"x12"x4" natural stone sink preserves the characteristic silver-grey veining of premium Carrara White marble.
The honed matte finish subdues reflectivity, drawing attention to the precision-carved vertical fluted channels. This reeded rhythm provides visual depth while maintaining the geometric discipline of the form. Featuring a partially filled surface texture and a pre-drilled right-side faucet hole, it commands proportional authority in any tightly configured modern space.

In their third remodel with us, this young family wanted to update their craftsman bungalow kitchen. The existing kitchen already opened up into the dining room from one of our previous renovations. However, the kitchen still lacked adequate counter space and attractive, functional storage.
This project started with an aesthetic compromise– he wanted a stainless steel kitchen, she wanted a more traditional style. The final result has modern lines and smooth surfaces, combined with natural variation and texture.
Handmade ceramic tiles from North Prairie Tile add a touch of rustic warmth. The rift-sawn white-oak has a more subdued pattern than the usual plain sawn oak.
Before the renovation, a free standing island added storage and counter space to the kitchen. This design added a built-in version of this makeshift solution. The new transitional cabinet is custom built to match the existing buffet in the dining room, and keeps dishes and tools out of sight.

Neutral subdued hues are used for the interior of this elegant home. It draws attention toward the floor to ceiling windows, natural light, and beautiful surroundings.

Our MOSS customers came to us knowing they wanted to stay in their home in their McLean community, with friendly neighbors and good schools for their children. The problem? Their home, a standard split foyer, didn’t suit their needs as their children grew older. Knowing that yard space comes at a premium in Northern Virginia, they instead chose to add on an entire second floor above the home’s main structure, which would include a new master suite with ensuite bathroom, two bedrooms for their children with a connecting “jack and jill” bathroom, a new laundry room for the main level, and a stunning staircase to connect the top two levels. MOSS also transformed an old bedroom into a new home gym and updated the basement with built-ins and a fireplace to mimic the new built-ins and fireplace on the main level, plus added on a front porch with beautiful stonework. By focusing on our customers’ needs, the end result is beautiful and functional. To boot? The entire exterior was updated with new siding and a subdued blue color scheme – a dramatic difference from the original brick exterior.

With a total interior space of 14'X24', we aimed to create maximum efficiency by finding the optimal proportions for the rooms, and by locating all fixtures and appliances linearly along the long back wall. All white cabinets with stainless steel appliances and hardware, as well as the overall subdued material palette are essential in creating a modern simplicity. Other highlights include a curbless shower entry and a wall-hung toilet. The small but comfortable bath is suffused with natural light thanks to a generous skylight. The overall effect is a tranquil retreat carved out from a dense and somewhat chaotic urban block in one of San Francisco's most busy and vibrant neighborhoods.

A new, ground-up attached house facing Cooper Park in Williamsburg Brooklyn. The site is in a row of small 1950s two-story, split-level brick townhouses, some of which have been modified and enlarged over the years and one of which was replaced by this building.
The exterior is intentionally subdued, reminiscent of the brick warehouse architecture that occupies much of the neighborhood. In contrast, the interior is bright, dynamic and highly-innovative. In a nod to the original house, nC2 opted to explore the idea of a new, urban version of the split-level home.
The house is organized around a stair oriented laterally at its center, which becomes a focal point for the free-flowing spaces that surround it. All of the main spaces of the house - entry hall, kitchen/dining area, living room, mezzanine and a tv room on the top floor - are open to each other and to the main stair. The split-level configuration serves to differentiate these spaces while maintaining the open quality of the house.
A four-story high mural by the artist Jerry Inscoe occupies one entire side of the building and creates a dialog with the architecture. Like the building itself, it can only be truly appreciated by moving through the spaces.

This mixed media art is a combination of oil paint and hand made paper that is formed into patterns on stretched canvas. Original art, this piece is called Lattice of the Sun and is a study in balance. Bright, yet subdued, this could easily adorn an entry hall, a living room or dining room.

A combination of clean modern lines, with materials that have subtle movement create this dynamic and stunning powder bath. The neutral linen textured cabinetry finish and handle less design are more subdued details that allow the dark Dekton countertops to really make a statement. The thick mitered edge gives visual weight to this focal point of the powder bath. The walls are clad in a dramatic wallpaper with a black and white watercolor pattern, tying all the materials together.

Anchored by an inviting leather sectional sofa with contrast stitching detail, this loft space makes for the perfect hangout spot. Adults can enjoy the integrated bar with it’s stunning Ann Sacks tile backsplash, while kids can sprawl in comfort. A subtle mix of textures is enhanced by shadows cast by a pendant light, all subdued enough to add interest without overwhelming the incredible views from this part of the house.

Refresh the kitchen while adding lighting for dramatic effects. We added ambient lighting above the cabinets as well as increased task lighting throughout.
Leaving the existing countertop and cabinets while updating the flooring and backsplash. The granite is a dramatic style and somewhat fussy, so the backsplash had to be the supporting role, something subdued and simple, like glass tile. Rather than installing horizontally, we installed vertically as a way to bring the eye up.

Gavin Dale is a registered building designer of works primarily focused within the rural landscape of western New South Wales. Origami House looks at the core idea of the iconic Australian rural shed in an exposed environment. Open spaces that contain the necessary activities of daily life that can be easily manipulated to provide for large family gatherings or quieter spaces of reflection. The residence sets out primarily to achieve the expectations of the clients and reinforce the rural context of corrugated iron and raw and robust building materials. Two rectangular ‘tubes’ were aligned to the North then slid apart. This provided for unobstructed views combined with effective cross ventilation. The gabled roof line folds along a branched ridge, which in turn creates a vanishing point for the internal timber lined ceilings. The simple palette of grey metal, Barestone and radial sawn timber blends with the subdued basalt geology and agricultural landscape. This robust exterior is warmed internally by local crushed granite rammed earth thermal mass spline walls. These walls separate bedroom and living spaces that reach out beyond the façade to integrate with the landscaping and provide the robust shelter and protection from the elements.
