The Bruceton Mills Home is a one bedroom residence located in the middle of a wooded 27 acre space that has multiple ponds, sandstone outcroppings, and wildlife. The design goal was to connect the client with the earth and the natural environment with the intent of being self sustaining. The development of the idea became a series of planes that shift in length and hight from the earth creating an intimate connection between client and earth. Through these planes; subtractions provide viewing spots to experience the passage of time, the planes act as blank canvases for light, shad and shadow, and they provide an honorable material that will be appreciated for generations to come.

The homeowners recently moved from California and wanted a “modern farmhouse” with lots of metal and aged wood that was timeless, casual and comfortable to match their down-to-Earth, fun-loving personalities. They wanted to enjoy this home themselves and also successfully entertain other business executives on a larger scale. We added furnishings, rugs, lighting and accessories to complete the foyer, living room, family room and a few small updates to the dining room of this new-to-them home. Good pruning is subtraction with a plan. Deadwood, crossing limbs and weak branch unions come out, the canopy keeps its natural shape, and no more live tissue is removed than the tree can afford to lose in one season. While in the demolition phase, a large cement structure was uncovered where there were dropped ceilings. After creating a cover with teak wood for the beam it becomes an architectural element that adds rather than subtracts from the aesthetic of the space. Herringbone tile with a contrasting grout adds texture to the space.
