Lake Burton is a 2,775 acre man-made lake with 62 miles of shoreline located in the northeastern corner of Georgia in Rabun County. It is the first lake in a five-lake series called the Tallulah River Watershed that follows the original course of the Tallulah River. The series of lakes starts with Lake Burton as the northernmost lake followed by Lake Seed, Lake Rabun, Lake Tallulah Falls and the eastern arm of Lake Tugalo (the western arm is formed by the Chattooga River. The lakes are owned and operated by the Georgia Power Company to generate hydroelectric energy for Georgia's largest city, Atlanta. At one time these lakes were the largest producers of electricity in the state of Georgia. Now, they only provide peak power supply.
The lake was built in a deep valley located along a 10 mile section of the Tallulah River. The Lake Burton Dam was closed on December 22, 1919 and the lake started to fill. The dam is a gravity concrete dam, with a height of 128 feet and a span of 1,100 feet. The spillway is equipped with eight gates 22 feet wide by 6.6 feet high. The total capacity at an elevation of 1,866.6 feet is 108,000 acre-ft, of which 106,000 acre-ft is usable storage. The generating capacity of the dam is 6,120 kilowatts (two units).Lake Burton is the highest Georgia Power lake in Georgia.
Lake Burton gets its named from the town of Burton, which was the second largest town in Rabun County with a population of approximately 200 but now lies below the lake's surface. The town (and the lake) was named after local prominent citizen Jeremiah Burton and was situated along the road from Clayton, Georgia to the Nacoochee Valley. Andrew Jackson Ritchie served as the postmaster for the area for several years. Gold was first discovered in Rabun County where Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River come together and was the reason for the town's founding in the early 1800s.
The Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and Moccasin Creek State Park are located on the western side of the lake. Lake Burton is home to several species of fish, including Spotted Bass, Largemouth Bass, White Bass, Black Crappie, Bluegill, Redear Sunfish, White Catfish, Walleye, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Yellow Perch.
The residents of Lake Burton are a mix of permanent residents and seasonal vacationers who together make-up the Lake Burton Civic Association, a local organization who goal is to maintain the lake through volunteer clean-ups and other such events. Tulsa Design TherapyThe original kitchen was completely gutted to open up the space. LED lighting changes colors or can be set at whatever color you choose to set the mood. Very simple custom made walnut cabinetry is integrated throughout the entire apartment for unity. Curved walls were designed to open up the walkway to the bedroom, office and baths and soften the rectangular design of the high-rise space. The curved sectional allows flow-through traffic and mimics the curved hallway entrance. Porcelain metallic tile was utilized on all structural posts throughout to embrace them rather than to try to pretend they weren't there!
Bespoke By AcornThis luxury fitted mudroom, utility and cloakroom was installed for our clients who wanted to combine highly practical facilities with a cohesive design scheme that expressed their artistic aesthetic. What could have been a bland, utilitarian space has been transformed with dark walnut wood, decorative interest and exceptional craftmanship. The suite of bespoke built-in cabinets has created a beautifully organised, multipurpose free-flowing space. Flawlessly spray finished in Inchyra Blue by Farrow & Ball, the dark blue green grey is a dramatic colour which, along with the walnut wood and striking artworks, makes a bold and confident impression.
Bespoke walnut wood features
Walnut, renowned for its deep, lustrous tones has an enduring elegance. Used for fitted furniture and wall panelling, walnut elevates any space, adding natural warmth and richness. As a hardwood, walnut has exceptional durability and is naturally resistant to moisture and warping, which makes it an ideal choice for a cloakroom or bathroom setting. For this project, the walnut veneers have a natural oiled finish to bring out the beauty of the grain. The reeded walnut veneer wall panel behind the built-in bench adds stunning texture and visual interest to the joinery.
Shaker-style doors with fretwork panels
Made to measure fretwork doors and panels like these conceal unsightly features while also providing ventilation. A well-aired mudroom or boot room is vital to ensure outerwear dries quickly and doesn’t become musty. This is especially important for the floor to ceiling shoe cupboard we built here as it helps to keep the footwear fresh. The decorative fretwork pattern also adds visual interest and makes the room feel less enclosed. Integrated LED lighting installed throughout the joinery enhancing safety, brightness and enjoyment to the space.
Custom-made vanity unit
This large, sleek handle-free vanity unit provides a generous amount of storage space with a smart interior arrangement with customised waste management. The soft-closing drawers are operated by a smooth, silent, push to open mechanism. The floating design allows for LED lighting underneath the cabinet.
Dog shower and storage
The purpose-built indoor dog shower is great for hosing down and drying off the dogs. It doubles up as somewhere to wash muddy wellies and golf clubs too. Bespoke shelving and hooks for all the dog paraphernalia keeps the pet zone well-organised and tidy.
All in all, the result is a cloakroom which combines highly functional mudroom, utility and cloakroom facilities in an immensely stylish space. It’s immensely practical yet incredibly stylish with a strong focus on aesthetics and design.

Located in the heart of North Vancouver‘s up and coming moodyville neighbourhood, One Raven will be a beacon on E 3rd. With one of the last remaining heritage buildings on the front of the lot, the project consists of a NetZero high-performance infill duplex, each complete with its suite. This will add 4 new livable units in an infill laneway format with the heritage home complementing the site. The project is built to Level 5 of the BC Energy Step Code meaning it is already at the energy targets for all buildings in 2032, 13 years early! This spectacular and unique project was designed by the talented architect Tina Hubert at Design Studio 8.
The passive house inspired townhouses and suites will be accessed via an internal courtyard bi-secting the lot in an east-west orientation parallel to the street. A circulation corridor oriented north-south will be accessed from the sidewalk at the existing stone retaining wall and concrete stair.
The site design creates private open spaces yet also fosters connection to the semi-private realm of the inner courtyard. Each townhouse will have access to ground level patios, gardens, balconies and roof decks.
The exterior walls are “super” insulated walls that are 12” or more thick with a focus on air-tight detailing. High performance triple pane windows are oriented southward to maximize solar gain in winter and rely on shading devices in the summer. All other windows are located to promote natural ventilation and to reduce energy losses. The highly air-tight building (0.93 ACH) utilizes heat recovery ventilation system to exhaust air and bring in fresh air. The building is designed to be compact with a reduced surface area.
Maximizing on-site infiltration and rainwater collection will help manage storm water runoff. Ground-oriented landscape lighting and low planting along pathways and lot lines encourage visibility and overlook.
The architecture of the building is uniquely modern and clearly establishes it‘s identity, through horizontal and vertical rectilinear forms, asymmetrical window placement, slim profile detailing, standing seam metal cladding, heritage coloured siding, and architectural panelized guardrails.

Our clients loved the character of their Brunswick terrace home, but not its inefficient floor plan and poor year-round thermal control. They didn't need more space, they just needed their space to work harder.
The front bedrooms remain largely untouched, retaining their Victorian features and only introducing new cabinetry. Meanwhile, the main bedroom’s previously pokey en suite and wardrobe have been expanded, adorned with custom cabinetry and illuminated via a generous skylight.
At the rear of the house, we reimagined the floor plan to establish shared spaces suited to the family’s lifestyle. Flanked by the dining and living rooms, the kitchen has been reoriented into a more efficient layout and features custom cabinetry that uses every available inch. In the dining room, the Swiss Army Knife of utility cabinets unfolds to reveal a laundry, more custom cabinetry, and a craft station with a retractable desk. Beautiful materiality throughout infuses the home with warmth and personality, featuring Blackbutt timber flooring and cabinetry, and selective pops of green and pink tones.
The house now works hard in a thermal sense too. Insulation and glazing were updated to best practice standard, and we’ve introduced several temperature control tools. Hydronic heating installed throughout the house is complemented by an evaporative cooling system and operable skylight.
The result is a lush, tactile home that increases the effectiveness of every existing inch to enhance daily life for our clients, proving that good design doesn’t need to add space to add value.
Simply Home DecoratingBefore we redesigned the basement of this charming but compact 1950's North Vancouver home, this space was an unfinished utility room that housed nothing more than an outdated furnace and hot water tank. Since space was at a premium we recommended replacing the furnace with a high efficiency model and converting the hot water tank to an on-demand system, both of which could be housed in the adjacent crawl space. That left room for a generous laundry room conveniently located at the back entrance of the house where family members returning from a mountain bike ride can undress, drop muddy clothes into the washing machine and proceed to shower in the bathroom just across the hall.
