In the late summer heat the tomatoes and peppers are harvested on an almost daily basis as are their companion herbs of basil, parsley and thyme. The zucchini squash in its own bed needs the extra space given its large (and very decorative) leaves.

Raised beds hold organic garden soil mix that ranges from 8" - 2' deep. Here you see a late winter, very early spring view of this salad garden in metro Atlanta. Various types of lettuce, kale, parsley, and chives are accented by pansies which have edible flowers. After our frost date, most of this will be removed. Tomatoes will be planted in the center where the soil is deepest. Basil and mesclun will be planted around.

Newly built vegetable garden parterre. Cedar raised beds are surrounded by wood chip pathways and enclosed by Critterfence, deterring both deer and smaller pests without detracting from the garden's architecture. Along the western edge, a pollinator friendly perennial planting frames the view from the deck.

This customer was looking to add privacy, use less water, include raised bed garden and fire pit...making it all more their style which was a blend between modern and farmhouse.

Powder coated, heavy gauge aluminum makes for striking beds in this small, formal herb garden. Compact size makes it just right for growing only what is needed. It is a focal point in the garden, and a much loved, lived in space for the homeowners'.

Newly built vegetable garden. Beds are built with 4 inch cedar timbers, pathways are soil (for now). Seven foot tall Critterfence deters both deer and smaller garden pests without detracting from the garden architecture.

'Sweet 100' cherry tomatoes growing in a 15-gallon terra-cotta pot. Container-grown tomatoes are more susceptible to blossom end rot, but cherry tomatoes like 'Sweet 100', 'Sungold', and 'Black Cherry' rarely have this problem. Photo by Steve Masley

A custom all cedar raised bed was designed and installed outside the kitchen door for easy access. It is filled with organic potting soil, organic fertilizer, and herb seedlings.

The flowers of some of the annuals are edible as well: the nasturtiums have a peppery flavor, the marigold petals taste citrusy and although best used as a garnish, the purple pansies are edible too.
Pink zinnias and the spent flowers of garlic chives are seen in the foreground…

Antique granite cobbles with a mill wheel to mark the intersecting pathways create the floor of this vegetable garden. Recycled granite curbing pulled up from city streets was used in creating the steps seen in the background.
