Saturday June 27, 2:30 to 4:00pm | Bluemont Piedmont Retreat by Jay Graham, FASLA of Graham Landscape Architecture, with Ralph Cunningham, FAIA Nestled at the base of the Shenandoah foothills in Virginia, this 178-acre site, once used for agriculture, has been transformed by the current owners into an attractive country retreat. The expansive landscape surrounding the residence incorporates Modernist design elements while acknowledging the site’s vibrant agricultural history. Visitors enter the property along an extended driveway, aligned to perfectly capture views of the nearby foothills before meandering through a wooded area featuring a beautiful array of stone walls and mature oak trees that terminate abruptly in a clearing, offering guests their first glimpse of the main residence. Pathways, and terraces, encircle the home where a wedge-shaped entry garden beckons, drawing visitors through the front door. Other spaces include the Tapestry and Master’s gardens, which were designed to introduce a diverse palette of plants to the property, direct views, and provide an additional splash of color and personality to the outdoor area. Adjacent to the home and bounded by natural boulders found on site, a turf platform provides flat ground for outdoor games. Beyond the lawn, a newly established meadow completes the design plan as it draws attention outward to more natural aspects of the environment, a pond, and restored woodlands. This homeowner was an avid gardener who wanted to remove all lawn from her small front yard and plant it primarily with native species. She needed some help taking the existing plants and developing it into a cohesive plan that worked with the site conditons. The result is a densley planted landscape with mostly native plants that should completely fill in within 2 years time. This landscape is designed for year-round interest with evergreen trees, shrubs and perennials as well as winter berries, grasses, spring and summer blooming perennials, and the vibrant fall foliage synonymous with native plants.

An old lawn is replaced by a vibrant tapestry of drought-tolerant plants, watered through drip irrigation. Also gone is a narrow, awkward concrete walkway -- a brand-new natural stone path leads you to the front door.

A beautiful mixture of both transitional and traditional styles is combined to blend with existing antiques and new transitional pieces for a unique dining room. Gorgeous Teal hi-back chairs are accented with sliver nail heads that coordinates with a custom glass transitional dining table and pedestals. A 19th Century Rococo Iron & Smoke crystal chandelier is hung from a 14' silver metallic domed ceiling. Light is reflected from both the glass table and a custom mirror that creates a stunning look for both sides of the table. The room is accentuated with an antique multi colored antique tapestry , an heirloom tea service set and a vibrant centerpiece floral with purples, pink & white roses, complimenting the beauty and romance of this room.

This enchanting garden scene invites you through a charming white picket gate into a vibrant and abundant floral haven. Towering foxgloves sway gently among cheerful bursts of dahlias, snapdragons, and sweet peas, creating a dynamic tapestry of color and texture. The gravel pathway leads you through lush, blooming flowerbeds that burst with life, capturing the essence of a romantic cottage garden. Every element in this space has been thoughtfully curated by Trace Robinson to blend structure with the free-spirited beauty of nature, offering an irresistible invitation to explore. A harmonious balance between whimsy and design, this garden celebrates the art of living with flowers.

As skilled landscape architects, they've created a rich tapestry of color with blooming annuals in various pink, red, and white hues, complemented by lush greenery.
