Bathed in natural light, this English Cottage kitchen addition honors the charm of the home’s 1938 architecture while perfectly framing sweeping garden views. From the apron-front farm sink, you look straight through the garden arch into the shade garden and orchard beyond, a daily reminder of the home’s idyllic garden.
The kitchen’s flow creates a natural gathering place for family and loved ones, sitting just off the living room and anchored by a custom island modeled after an antique dairy table. Its classic turned legs and warm wood give the island a timeless, heirloom charm. Deep drawers generously accommodate pots and pans, while a clever rollout above stores lids neatly in place, making every piece easy to find. A bespoke glass-front hutch in a soft greige accent color showcases the homeowners’ collected antique serveware treasures, adding both contrast and personality.
To give the space a sense of grandeur, the ceiling was raised a foot higher than the rest of the home. Tongue-and-groove paneling and hand-hewn beams lend a feeling of intention and history to the added height. Arched openings—echoing the home’s original architecture—frame the breakfast nook, dining room, and entry to the living room.
The breakfast nook itself is pure cottage charm, with built-in bench seating, a replicated arched niche for display, and a view that invites cozy mornings and quiet evenings. An antique crystal chandelier hangs above the island, each crystal catching and giving a special sparkle, while a leaded diamond-glass transom gracefully frames the entry to the butler’s pantry.
Custom inset cabinetry brings nostalgic detail, complemented by unlacquered brass hardware and lighting. A French-made bridge faucet and pot filler in polished nickel introduce a refined mix of metals. The classic marble-inspired quartz countertops pair seamlessly with a handmade ceramic subway tile backsplash, while the Italian Ilve range stands as both a culinary tool and a statement piece.
Every inch of this kitchen is designed for beauty and purpose, from integrated storage that keeps everything in its place to architectural details that make it feel as if it has always been part of this storybook English cottage.

This outdoor cabana kitchen was turned into private sanctuary once the owners added Weatherwell Elite aluminum shutters. It gave them the flexibility to block the wind and the sun glare when needed, or open up to the view. It also created some much needed privacy from their neighbors. Now they can use their cabana 365 days a year.

Situated in old Palo Alto, CA, this historic 1905 Craftsman style home now has a stunning landscape to match its custom hand-crafted interior. Our firm had a blank slate with the landscape, and carved out a number of spaces that this young and vibrant family could use for gathering, entertaining, dining, gardening and general relaxation. Mature screen planting, colorful perennials, citrus trees, ornamental grasses, and lots of depth and texture are found throughout the many planting beds. In effort to conserve water, the main open spaces were covered with a foot friendly, decorative gravel. Giving the family a great space for large gatherings, all while saving water.

What our clients needed:
• Create a garden folly that doubles as a well-built shed for crafts and storage.
• Size the structure large enough for comfortable storage without dominating the garden.
• Discreetly locate the shed in the far corner of the rear yard while maintaining existing trees.
• Ensure that the structure is protected from the weather and carefully detailed to deter access of wildlife and rodents.
FUNCTION
• Construct the shed slab close to grade to permit easy access for bicycle storage, while building shed walls above grade to ensure against termites and dryrot.
• Install a French door and operable casement windows to admit plenty of daylight and provide views to the garden.
• Include rugged built-in work bench, shelves, bike racks and tool storage for a rustic well-organized and efficient space.
• Incorporate GFIC electrical service for safe access to power at this distant corner of the yard.
• Position energy-efficient interior lighting to ensure space can be used year-round.
• Switch control of exterior light from house and from shed for ease of command.
AESTHETICS
• Design and detail the shed to coordinate with the Arts and Crafts style house.
• Include an arbor for future flowering vines, further softening the shed’s garden presence.
• Simple and rustic interior surfaces ensure that the space is easy to clean.
• Create an aged and softly weathered appearance, and protect the exterior siding by finishing the cedar with a custom-colored semi-transparent stain.
INNOVATIVE MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
• Factory-built components were pre-assembled to allow for a speedy assembly and for a shorter on-site construction schedule.
• Each component was easily transported through the yard without disturbing garden features.
• Decorative exterior trim frames the door and windows, while a simpler trim is used inside the unadorned shed.
OBSTACLE OVERCOME
• The structure is located in the corner of the yard to avoid disturbance of a curly willow tree.
• The low-profile structure is positioned close to property lines while staying beneath the allowable daylight plane for structures.
• To comply with daylight plane close to fence, the roof form combines hip and gable forms, with door located at gable end.
• The height of the modest interior is maximized, without exceeding the allowable building height.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
• The concrete slab was precisely formed and finished for ease of shed assembly before the factory-built components were delivered to site.
• Precision planning meant the pre-framed door fit exactly between raised concrete curb.
