2012 NARI CAPITAL COTY, MERIT AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL BASEMENT INTERIOR A newer house in the suburb of Ashburn, Virginia, is home to this military couple. With a growing family and a daughter moving back home, they were in need of more space. An unfinished basement offered plenty of space for a remodel, but coming up with a desirable floor plan was difficult due to the location of a stairway that the builder had installed and the location of the furnace and hot water heater. Working with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, the couple came up with a plan that moved the furnace and hot water heater to a storage room and redirected the stairway in order to create a workable layout. The primary goal was to have a home office, full bathroom, guest bedroom and a large entertaining area. The focal point of the design is a new gas fireplace embedded in ledge stone with a large LED television above it. A bar with custom cabinetry, exotic stone countertops and decorative pendant lighting creates a central area for the family to gather.

This Kitchen was completely updated with a full gut and rebuild. Siteline Cabinets in Mushroom color, Quartz Countertops form MSI and a Marble Hex tile Backsplash makes this kitchen sparkle. Vaulted ceilings presented challenges but were solved by extending the vent run to 14 ft. The clean lines of the JennAire appliances give a very transitional look to the room. The peninsula was converted to an island make the kitchen much more workable for this retired couple. The floor was made consistent throughout the house making the flow seem seamless from room to room.

By moving the mudroom doorway over allowed for a much better workable space in the mudroom and light now flows through from that area into the kitchen. This also gave us a nice long wall to place the bar on. The family room was quite large which allowed for the new eating area and fabulous built in display wall.

On the exterior, the desire was to weave the home into the fabric of the community, all while paying special attention to meld the footprint of the house into a workable clean, open, and spacious interior free of clutter and saturated in natural light to meet the owner’s simple but yet tasteful lifestyle. The utilization of natural light all while bringing nature’s canvas into the spaces provides a sense of harmony. Light, shadow and texture bathe each space creating atmosphere, always changing, and blurring the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor space. Color abounds as nature paints the walls. Though they are all white hues of the spectrum, the natural light saturates and glows, all while being reflected off of the beautiful forms and surfaces. Total emersion of the senses engulf the user, greeting them with an ever changing environment. Style gives way to natural beauty and the home is neither of the past or future, rather it lives in the moment. Stable, grounded and unpretentious the home is understated yet powerful. The environment encourages exploration and an awakening of inner being dispelling convention and accepted norms. Inspiration for a contemporary home design remodel in Other

A gorgeous kitchen makeover. Green Mountain Builders transformed this tired Bonita Bay kitchen into a spectacular, workable space by relocating appliances, upgrading all appliances, and adding designer finishes and features. They also created additional storage space and two-toned cabinetry with multi-level peninsula with seating for four. Dramatic lighting and center chandelier provide additional light complementing the natural light streaming through a transom window over the cabinets. The multi-toned countertops add an elegant touch, while the beautiful veined top is also utilized in the backsplash.

This is a proposal for a 36'x128' corner lot in South Minneapolis. The main considerations were sun exposure, privacy and as big as possible private yard. After setbacks the workable area is 23'x95'. The house is composed of two boxes connected by a bridge. This bridge allows to keep more area on the ground level creating a covered deck for the courtyard as well as being the studio/home office area. The features of this 3bd/3.5 br. and 2 car garage home (2400s.f above grade) are double height living room, open layout, integrated dining/kitchen and studio.

(This is a 3D Design - NOT a photo!) The client REALLY wanted to have a chair in the master bath suite, but the existing closet was taking up just a little too much space to allow for it. With the help of 3D visualization, the client was convinced that giving up a foot of closet space was workable AND gave her the luxurious bath (with chair!) she wanted. Added bonus: Envision 3D designed a new space-efficient closet!

This farmhouse, with it's original foundation dating back to 1778, had a lot of charm--but with its bad carpeting, dark paint colors, and confusing layout, it was hard to see at first just how welcoming, charming, and cozy it could be. The first focus of our renovation was creating a master bedroom suite--since there wasn't one, and one was needed for the modern family that was living here day-in and day-out. To do this, a collection of small rooms (some of them previously without heat or electrical outlets) were combined to create a gorgeous, serene space in the eaves of the oldest part of the house, complete with master bath containing a double vanity, and spacious shower. Even though these rooms are new, it is hard to see that they weren't original to the farmhouse from day one. In the rest of the house we removed walls that were added in the 1970's that made spaces seem smaller and more choppy, added a second upstairs bathroom for the family's two children, reconfigured the kitchen using existing cabinets to cut costs ( & making sure to keep the old sink with all of its character & charm) and create a more workable layout with dedicated eating area. Also added was an outdoor living space with a deck sheltered by a pergola--a spot that the family spends tons of time enjoying during the warmer months. A family room addition had been added to the house by the previous owner in the 80's, so to make this space feel less like it was tacked on, we installed historically accurate new windows to tie it in visually with the original house, and replaced carpeting with hardwood floors to make a more seamless transition from the historic to the new. To complete the project, we refinished the original hardwoods throughout the rest of the house, and brightened the outlook of the whole home with a fresh, bright, updated color scheme. Bonnie and Bernie downsized to a grand old condominium a few blocks from their former house. The condo has high ceilings and beautiful moldings, and also a multitude of angles, chases, and vents. Goals included a workable kosher kitchen, an informal eating area, and room for: an extra freezer, extra fridge, a wine fridge, a washer/dryer, utility closet, and a pantry. An additional goal was to keep the multitude of chases and vents from interfering with the flow of the space. I have numbered the chases, vents, and pipe, which were a major design challenge. #4 and #6 (a pipe) turned out to not be visual or design issues, but we needed to work around all the others.
