My foray into architecture started in high school when I decided to expand my family's Santa Barbara home into its large unfinished attic. My parents and neighbors were a little alarmed when they came home from work and saw that I had cut a large hole in the side of the house for a new door and stairway. For the next four summers I worked for contractors and electricians so that I could learn the skills needed to finish the attic into livable space. At UC Berkeley, I studied architecture and civil engineering. After college, I worked in construction and was licensed as a general contractor. For the past 20 years, I have been working as an architect on new vacation homes throughout Northern California and remodels/renovations in the San Francisco Bay Area. My goal as an architect is to help you make the architecture and construction process a conscious effort and to create a beautiful and functional environment, unique to your personality and reflective of your specific needs. Life is but a dream. With a slant towards Hindu philosophy, my mother would argue that life is pre-determined and that ultimately we have no control over our lives. I would argue that we have the choice to create beautiful environments, and I meticulously work through the details to ensure that your dream becomes a reality. My design etiquette is restrained and comfortable, not gaudy. I love light and large windows, natural materials, and expression of the structure. I gravitate to work that is made by craftsmen rather than machine, to elements and details from the 1920s and before. Thank you for your consideration in having me help with your project. Rob Kelly

Levitch Associates, Inc. has steadily increased the span of its reputation, with over 1,000 projects built and a body of work that includes residential remodels, complex additions, new homes, light commercial, and industrial projects. Our personal touch, cultivated since 1960, lends itself to the warmth and good nature our clients prefer in their projects. From designing to building your project, we realize the importance of our relationship with you. We pride ourselves in completing any project with skill and seamless grace. As a family-run business, Levitch Associates, Inc. has a rich history with its staff. Comprised of architectural assistants, draftspersons, office personnel, highly skilled carpenter foremen, laborers, and a select group of experienced subcontractors, the staff has increased and diversified since the initial handful of pioneers. In the 1960’s, Edward Levitch and a handful of employees decided to approach architecture in a radical and innovative way. By combining architecture and construction into a single process, they began to practice what is currently known as Integrated Architect-led, Design-Build. For 24 years, Edward Levitch used his extensive experience and inexorable work ethic to cultivate a successful business. In 1984 the firm incorporated and his son Maurice joined the family business in an official capacity. Both Edward and Maurice Levitch are long-standing members of the American Institute of Architects, an organization dedicated to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and competence.

The Studio: We develop adaptive architectural solutions that bridge all aspects of a design problem. Our approach begins with the analysis of project components that range from environmental and use conditions to code constraints. We then look to varied disciplines that include architecture, interiors, landscape and construction as part of a comprehensive methodology. As a result, our designs respond in a wide-ranging, innovative, and often unexpected manner - resulting in space and form that is creative and fresh while maintaining use and purpose. This process engenders an architecture that is of its time and simultaneously, timeless. Matthew Baran: Matt is a licensed architect who has been practicing in Northern and Southern California for over 15 years. He has extensive experience with single and multi-family residential, commercial, and institutional architecture. He previously worked on large and small scale projects for firms as diverse as Angelil Graham (Now AGPS) and The Jerde Partnership. In addition to his own practice, he is a partner at the design build development firm Assemblage. We are often asked what it is that makes our firm stand apart from what is admittedly a rather crowded field. When you partner with us, the first thing you get is a local architect well known in the community, who has lived in the great city of Oakland for 18 years and has been practicing all that time. This gives us a strong base of knowledge of the local regulatory agencies, their specific and varied needs, and that knowledge is very valuable when crafting a project for review. Secondly, you get a practical designer. Daniel Swain was first a carpenter and home builder before returning to University to pursue his degree in Architecture. That experience gave him a unique perspective on the construction process that is often not found in other architects. And third, you get a designer and builder who will care for your home as you do. Value its aesthetic and spirit, hear your needs and wants for your project, and combine those elements to create best project for you, your home and your budget!

Architect Lorin Hill and associates emphasize pragmatic and creative design solutions to variety of design opportunities throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area. Every project presents its own unique challenges, and we find something compelling in every project, no matter what size. Excellent design only reaches its full potential if it can be effectively translated into a completed construction project that meets scheduling and budget goals. We promote a pro-active approach aimed at achieving and maintaining good "chemistry" among all players in the process: the client, the design team, and the contractor. Our particular strengths include responsiveness, thoroughness, communication and flexibility. We provide a continuum of services that take a project from the broad overview (a master plan) to the specifics of construction detailing and specifications, with active involvement in the construction process. We are committed to environmentally sustainable practices in our work and often incorporate the Build-it-Green GreenPoints Rating System into our projects. First and foremost, the renovation of existing structures minimizes the waste of resources. We promote the use of locally-sourced, renewable and recycled building materials as well as building systems and site design that favor water and energy conservation. Improved indoor air quality and the reduction of contaminants contribute to healthier living environments. Our primary focus is residential projects, with an emphasis on high-quality design and creative, pragmatic solutions. Much of our work involves the comprehensive renovation and expansion of existing homes. We draw upon the inherent strengths of a building to produce improved living spaces, healthier environments, and added real estate value. Other project types include commercial tenant improvements and mixed-use developments.
Laura Natkins' architecture practice reflects her commitment to the principle of “just enough” design- pragmatic, preferably simple, with character and style and above all, uniquely fitting. Laura seeks solutions that fit the client, the context, the budget, and the environment. Regardless of size, each project receives Laura's personal attention; in fact, small changes that have a big impact are her specialty; building less is the greenest solution.
