Paint Color

Hi! We are in the process of refinishing the kitchen in our 980 square-foot house. We have taken down some walls and made the space an open floor plan. I want the design to be cohesive throughout the open space, but I'm not sure what color to paint the wall behind the open shelving in the kitchen.
My 1st instinct was a light mint green color or a dark blue. The rest of the space is not completely finished yet (we still need countertops on the island and I need to decorate the walls etc.) I want the paint color behind the open shelving to tie in with the rest of the small space and I want to be able to change the items on the open shelving to fit the season. Please help!

I would paint the area behind the shelves the same neutral color as you select for the rest of the walls. The items on the shelves can add color which you indicate you will change seasonally.

I would paint the walls white to unify all the white cabinetry or a very pale gray to pick up the marble backsplash. When I look at your photos I love the serenity of the gray and white and the yellow color just fights it. I think any strong color is going to separate the kitchen from the rest of the house instead of unifying it. You could use color in a small window valance to bring color in, like you already did with the towels.

I think walls should marry the backsplash. Gray makes sense to me, but I wouldn't go pale, I'd go mid-tone, something like slate, that matches the deeper gray in the tile. Contrast provides drama, even in a small space. The same gray behind the shelves would make whatever you put on them stand out, whether it's white, or color. Looks like you could carry the same gray, or a somewhat lighter shade of the same gray into the sitting area. Taking the same color throughout unifies and enlarges the space. Might use the color in the upholstered chairs for pottery on the shelves to tie things together as well.

I would match the cabinet color, or go to a pale gray.

Thanks for all the help! I am going to leave the rest of the walls in that space the nurturant color that it is now. The gray color sounds like a good option. Thanks!

Very cute Kitchen!!
I actually really like your idea of the dark blue on that small space behind your shelving, I think it would compliment the rest of your furnishings and color scheme quite well...The only issue I see with that would be your seasonal items may not "pop" and get lost in a dark wall color. I think a nice light-med blue-grey tone, or light grey would be lovely there.

I would not paint it blue or light gray...since your backsplash shows it has variation of gray tones then go a little bolder and choose the darker gray...
