Devices are MUCH more expensive. Plates are not really.

On the other hand, there are probably far more standard switches and outlets in use that Decora style, meaning that the economies of scale favor those types of plates.

That said, I hadn't noticed a difference in plate cost--styled plates cost about the same and the basic plastic ones are so cheap it doesn't really matter.

So, why would Decora devices cost more? Does someone own rights to the style?

Supply and demand.

What the market will bear.

The worst part of the pricing is that the ones that cast about $2 are, at heart, a 39¢ device. The really decent ones are about $5 to $6.

There is certainly plenty of demand for these, but I think that it is more of what Petey says about what the market will bear. Since these are "must have" items for so many new home buyers, the manufacturers can get a premium price.

There was a thread a while back about the noise of Decora switches. They do make a click while most standard switches make no noise at all. The latest thing in Decora is a plate that snaps in place and hides all screws.

Volume really does make a difference in cost. Decora has lower volume and costs more for that reason. Other factors may be involved also. The higher price probably ensures a continued lower sales volume for the Decora.

"The latest thing in Decora is a plate that snaps in place and hides all screws."

You want to talk about expensive!.......

Wrong, unixisgoodforyou, Decora DOESN'T use the same plate.

Wrong, Texas Red Head, standard switches DO make sound.

wrong, Bus Driver, Decoora switches make MORE volume; not less.
