Are you trying to bring the cabinets out to match the depth of the fridge, because there are other ways to do that without adding so much more material and expense, not to mention that it makes getting to the upper cabinets much more difficult.

Thanks for your quick reply, not the purpose is not to align with the fridge but to have a 30' deep counter for extra working space. Think appliance garage.

Maybe you can think of another way to store appliances. Many of the appliance garages are placed in dead corners like these below. There are so many items in a kitchen that based on the cabinets and counters being 24" deep.

If you have plenty of floor space and don't mind paying extra for the countertop you can do that. Just put some blocking with support and that will work.

Are you using a stove or a cook top and wall oven? I would be concerned about the stove being too deep into the counter top unless you have plans for behind it as well.

This is for a section without appliances. It is just for an appliance garage. The extra space is also used for example to avoid a steam cooker blowing all the steam on the wall counter. But we digress. The fact is, we are installing standard depth base cabinets and a 30'' deep countertop, and I'm looking on suggestions on how to make a sound structure to attach the cabinets. If it's at the end of a run, I'd consider something like a vertical wine-rack to use up the extra foot -- I think you could get two bottles by four or five, and that would at least give you solid cabinet support for the first two feet of the install (with your engineered box filling in the rest of what your granite needs.

OK, love the idea of 30" base cabs for our smaller u-shaped kitchen. Longer, deeper drawers and more countertop space are always good things.

But in a u-shaped kitchen there are 2 corners - and with a 30x30 dead corner that creates problems. Especially since susans come with 24" returns - they don't "connect" to 30" cabs - any ideas how to treat corners with 30" base cabs?

The whole kitchen industry is based on 24" deep base cabinets. Even granite comes in approx 72" depth so the fabricator can get three cuts out of a slab.

The only way to get deeper cabinets is for them to be made custom which means deeper drawers, longer extension glides etc. There is no end to the issues you will create, besides not being able to reach the back of your second shelf on your upper cabinets. Counters will be more expensive because there will be more waste. I would not advise going down that path.

We too will be going down that road while using the standard depth cabinetry. We'll be blocking out from the wall (as GN Builders posted) and using filler where needed. Vicente, please post your finished project!

It's six inches people! Not 6 feet.... with all the stuff that accumulates at the back of most counters, it sounds like a great way to get some extra space. Or if you are not the accumulator type, it will be a great workspace.

I am probably late to this conversation but one thing to consider would be a "roll out" pantry cabinet behind the base cabinets. You would then be using that dead space for something practical.

A friend of mine did that and I LOVE it. She stores all those cluttery things in a shallow garage and still has great counter space in front. Her cabinet maker made made the cabinets/drawers extra deep. The drawers pull out with a slight stop at normal depth and then pull out a few more inches - she hides stuff in there (lol). Go for it!!!!!

Yes, also deeper countertop makes the cabinets much more useable for larger pans or loads of pantry storage

We lived for 30 years with pine kitchen cabinets that were 30 inches deep and now we are in a new house where the cabinets are 24"! Hate the narrower depth! 30" was perfect! Now as we go to renovate, my first move is to get rid of these cabinets but I can see it won't be so easy to find 30" deep cabinets! Our pine cabinets were so great, I didn't realize it would be hard to recreate them!

The only problem by adding 6" to the countertop depth is some people may find uncomfortable to put dishes away or taking things out especially when it comes to the corner cabinets.

I had 30” deep countertop and just pulled cabinets out 6” and framed it out back there. Loved it

I did this and just dropped my wall cabinets down to 12" (Including light rail). I love it and plan on doing this is our next house. I'm not quite 5'0 tall and now I can reach in all my cabinets.
