Indoor Grill Ideas

Moving into my first home with this 1950's indoor grill.

We are just not sure what to do with it. We have approached a contractor to get an estimate of what it would cost to remove it (~$20K after everything is said and done). It's a bit steep so we are hoping for ideas on what we could do with it to turn it into something cool. We have a fireplace on the other side (see image below).

Any cool ideas?

Why don't you want to keep and use it? I think it's a great feature as long as it's clean and the flue works.

You could cover it with a very large canvas painting. Then it would be great to add some art lights above the brick wall.

Get a stone slab to cover the grill and put a bunch of candles or a display of some other kind in there...

(p.s.) you didn't ask, but I wouldn't follow the previous owners with the TV over the mantel -- the whole room would work better if you put it on the next wall instead (over a long low console table) and rotate the furnishings accordingly...

Cut a nice piece of wood to fit, stain and poly a couple times, for a Temporary dry bar! I say temporary, because it's original to the home and either YOU or a future owner might like to use it for its original intention. It is sweeeet!

We have that same feature in one of our houses. Most people in our neighborhood when remodeling, removed it and sheet rocked over it. We used it when we were first married 35 years ago. It's was very messy and smokey as I recall.
Prefer to barbecue outside.

20 k to knock down brick and dry wall...wow. Was there more involved. Maybe get another quote!

Along with exorbitant Bay Area Home prices come high renovation costs. It's such a hot market, it's nearly impossible to find a contractor willing to take on a small project.

I can't believe people want to pull these out. When I was a kid, I dreamed of having a kitchen with a grill built into a brick wall just like the Brady's.

Here mine now. We're keeping the 60 year old Thermador, as it works fantastically.

We have one in the house we just bought. The house was built in 1940 but the great room with the grill was a 1950 addition.
It has a beautiful copper hood.

Previous owners of my house removed the grill, added electric and kept a fish tank in the hole. Not our style. I'd like to put the grill back in, if I can find one. Currently we only store our grilling stuff there.
