Unbalanced Living Room: Fireplace + 1 Window, any ideas?

I've been reading through the discussions for the last few days and I'm blown away by everyone's talent and advice. You all have such beautiful homes! We're so looking forward to our new home, but I'm not sure what to do about this living room. I hope you can help.

Here are photos from the listing:

View from the front door --

Looking from dining room to front door --

I would love built ins surrounding the fireplace but I don't think that's possible because of the window.

Does it feel incredibly imbalanced to you? Our set-up would probably be similar -- couch against the wall, TV above fireplace. Maybe a bookcase to the left of the fireplace as well.

We're in the process of choosing paint colors for the house and I think something lighter will help brighten up the room and make it feel larger. The tan is just a few shades too dark for me.

How would you bring balance to the room?

the living room color is definitely too pinkish tan. What are the dimensions of the room so a layout can be done.

Congratulations on your new home! I would consider balancing out the window by placing the t.v. on a console to the left of the fireplace. The sofa appears to be a fairly short distance for the t.v. to be above the fireplace. A console would need to be 25% wider than the television. The paint color appears to be more of a taupe. I'd consider a creamy off white or a lighter beige with more of a sandy tone to it to complement the floors. Keep us updated with your progress!

I would put 3 floating shelves positioned to the size of the window on that wall to balance out the room. Easy DIY project;)

I love built-ins by a FP. No need to have them on both sides. You could fill in the whole wall area to the left of the FP, with doored cabinets up to counter height. You could use the cabinets for the toys to stash into quickly when company comes over.

Advise you to buy an area rug for the full sofa width with the front feet over it. Add a coffee table in front 18" of the sofa. It can be an ottoman instead. Place the small table at the left of the sofa with a lamp on it. Add soft drapes to hang at both sides of each window in a white linen.

Also add an accent chair or two to face into the sofa. Go with fabric, not bulky leather.

Go light with the wall color. Don't use gray as so many others have in the past. The only way to select a paint color is to buy sample cans to paint onto 2 foot by 2 foot poster boards & place them around the room at different times of the day. Only way to choose for your own space.

So many great ideas already! Thank you!

Beverly, the room is 14 x 13. I agree, the tan is way too pink for my taste!

katinparadise, I hadn't thought about a console! We'll have to see if that's an option. Our TV is about the same size as the one pictured, and I hadn't considered putting it anywhere other than above the fireplace.

whitecupcafeakamargo, floating shelves sound like a great option! Again, something I hadn't even thought of as an option -- how great! :)

Sandra, love these suggestions! The photos are actually from the previous owner, however we'll definitely keep your suggestions in mind! We have a rug similar to what you suggested, and I'm definitely searching for soft drapes that will work well with what we have. Thank you!

What if you added a bookshelf like this to the left side of the fireplace? You could see how it looks in both horizontal and vertical orientations and go with whatever feels right.

When decorating a room you need always to consider things in this order.

First and foremost: What colors values (lights and darks) and shapes can Not be changed and go from their to coordinate thins to that. The first thing I see is the wonderful wooden floor , and even this cold be sanded down and restained, once the varnish is completely removed. Although this could be restained to any color or or value...(Value means how light or dark) you like and then reapply several coats tough wood floor non-yellowing finish. Talk to the guys at Lowes paint department for more direction if you don't like the floor the color and value it is. Other than that the other surfaces like walls, and decor/furnishings can all be repainted and changed. The style of the room, molding, mantal widows would be costly to change but it is possible. The easiest change of course is to repaint them if you need to match these to rest of what I will expain below. NEXT, Pick a major accent piece from what will you want to DEFINITLY put in there that YOU ABSOLUTLY LOVE to pieces... colorwise, value wise,.. etc. and can't live without!!! (E.g.- a large ma painting or matching painting and sofa combination, or a large vase, nice carpet or other very noticeable home decor items, keepsakes you already have and won't part with in your own living room or another space that you want in your new living room or will inherit or buy soon.) If it is more than one object make sure the colors, style, designs, values textures shapes go with each other and look good next to each other or you must limit things to only ones that do. NEXT - take portable images that really match the colors and values of use this/these thing(s) to insprire you to then pick these same color value mood and style elements and for the other thins to be added to this room (such as colors for walls, surfaces, furniture and other home décor accessories like art, pillows, fabrics drapes, lampshades, rugs, etc.) If you cannot get a really good matching photo then you must hire a pro or get a local friend/family member who has done this before who is willing to do so for you. You must somehow transport or collect images or objects of everything o together in one place to see all of them together to make sore the go toghether. These images/ object or photos of them may include samples of paint chips, and fabric and other swatches/samples, ect. to put everything you have and gather next to everything else and pick everything else to go in this room using a view al at once guide. Using a wish list from this website for instance on you smart phone is one way, but you may need to make an 8 1/2" x 11" folder, a foldable collage or multipage loose leaf notebook, etc. to see spread out to the pick and coordinate all objects you are considering including, including paint chips, possible carpeting, drapery, furniture choices, art, fabric or wall covering samples and other accessories etc. together at one time. In interior decorating it's called something like Sample Color and Design Board. This may sound hard now, but its is actually really fun like playing a party or other game. Have fun and let your inspiration initial item(s) and gut reactions be your guide. You may also want to get some decorating images from your own photos of maybe your favorite places with a look you love like restaurants, craft shops, art galleries, cool, professionally decorated offices, friend's homes, hotel and other cool foyers, etc., PLUS, definitely, home décor catalogues, magazines and books for ideas and inspiration.. Its a FUN hunt!!!! HAPPY HUNTING!!!!!, Jill Dodson

Natalie, May I ask you to confirm the dimensions, because from your photos the room doesn't appear to be 13ft. If you room is that dimension, I can't account for so much wall space between the entrance door and window on the same wall. Please advise Thanks.

Congrats!:) Id suggest a parallel furniture arrangement (example in first pic) using a loveseat and 2 chairs, the loveseat facing the entry. Your FP will be tge focal point. To balance the lack of another window flanking your FP, Id place a tall etegere in that space ikea has some budget friendly ones called the Vittsjo series (example in 2nd pic) or just some art on the wall should do it Good luck!

I would do some type of built in that would accommodate the TV to the left of the fireplace, then continue on the right with a window seat with storage below. You then have room for your seating without hurting your neck watching TV and also room for a table or bench near the entry.

I like Beverly's floor plan best. With a small sofa and thin sofa table behind it you could have a mini entry table. Add a tall white bookcase to balance window and storage. swivel chairs would ease TV viewing and socializing.
You could hang a mirror, similar in size to the window, on the other side of the fireplace. Or a piece of art in a similar size would help to balance the room

I know this is an old post now, but i stumbled across it because I have the same dilemma. My window is fairly small & i was thinking about just covering it over with symmetrical bookcases either side of the fireplace. What did you go for in the end?

What a charming house! Is there any possibility of replacing that window? We lived in a house a few years ago of the same age. If possible, I'd flank the fireplace with two small, higher set windows. Then you can add bookcases below. It'd be an accurate choice for the period of home. Here's few examples below. Note, these had more "period" decor so just disregard if that's not your style.

I think this last pic is the same fireplace as yours. Rough cost of framing for two small windows is around $200-300 last I did something similar, plus cost of two windows.

You have great space in this area. I would first go with a lighter color on the walls. An accent rug & I would put a large shelf along that wall or move the TV to a stand next to the fireplace.. It would take the attention away from that one solid window.
