Is this what you were expecting. If your ceiling is 96" high, and the pendants are 30" above the table top, then the pendant cords will be about 36" long.

Thanks for the visual! I noticed you posted a 3 light pendant. Do you think that would look more balanced? I was afraid that might be too much for the space?

Jan Moyer, the table is to act as a breakfast / kids / work table. It is just under 31" high. I am attaching pictures to help with picturing the space. The table is about a foot shorter and 3" wider that the peninsula currently there. It has sides that can drop. I held one up to show the top. We need to repair the latches that holds sides up! They are very thick, heavy wood. The cabinets will be white dove, walls navajo white and the floors will have the linoleum removed and the original wood floors underneath refinished to match rest of house. We are also putting in recessed lights. The table is smaller but that will allow chairs on each end. I hope! Do you think the lights I pictured would work or are they too insubstantial? Husband really likes them.

That height is basically dining height. The peninsula you have is 36 inches.....same height as the rest of your counters unless your picture is wrong? I would not do "island pendants" , I would choose a single light. Maybe a lantern in iron

I think a mini pendant - something 6" wide like you're describing - will look odd over a 47" table. If you want an airy look, a glass shade or a lantern would be more suitable. There IS an equation for determining optimal fixture width over a table...maybe one of the pros will share with you. A lantern is different than a chandelier, and much depends on heaviness or mass. But. Since it will read as a table and should you want and airy chandelier versus a lantern.....and since it has "drop sides"......: I'd stick with lantern!

I totally "get" wanting a different element, an ages old crusty thing in a new kitchen, just cautioning that the best fix might be a farm table....and it is what it is. : ) But the pendant idea is not great, over that table. So sorry!!! If you opt for a chandelier , 60 to 65 % of table width is a good size, but since your is adjustable with drops, the lantern works best. ONE: )

Jan Moyer - I think I'm coming around! We are actually very attached to the table. It's over 150 years old and sturdy as can be. You're right tho that I was trying to keep the lights over it from being too heavy. I'll look at lanterns and and see if there is one hubby and I can both like. I had not even thought of going that route.

The first is better, I'd stay away from anything too polished. Depends the rest of your hardware in the kitchen as well.
