yes, the main place you need the backsplash is where there are splatters -- over range and sink. the rest is decoration.

Hi red252, that's a nice slab and cabinet you have there.

I agree with leelee, remove the 4 inch backsplash. If you don't, your new backsplash will not be flush with your existing 4 inch.

But I disagree on the second wall, I think you should tile it. You are going to have to repair your sheetrock whether you tile it or not, and installing a backsplash will complete that corner. It won't look lonely :)

Definitely tile up to the range. I don't suggest tiling above the range because you would probably have to remove it.

NOTE: On your tile selection, I highly recommend you pick a larger format. Mosaic sheets look pretty but require more skills to install and if done incorrectly, you will see a bunch of uneven grout joints and feel bits of tile sticking out.

Plus, because it is the backsplash for your range, there is a good chance pasta sauce and oils will splash onto it. Choose a non-porous tile like glass or porcelain to make clean-up easy!

Remove the 4" backsplash and do the entire area with whatever backsplash you like the most. We used a mosaic, that would work with your cabinets and granite.

I agree with Tile Plus . Go up to the range hood, remove the 4 inch piece of granite. You don't want little fussy tiles or anything too dark with the things you already have. It would compete with the beautiful finishes you've chosen. I usually don't suggest neutral and sedate but in this case you need neutral and sedate. I would say large white or cream tiles are you best bet.
