Suggestions for kitchen redecoration

Hey. We are looking to redecorate our kitchen. It's the last room to do and one that we are struggling the most with. We want to keep the units as they are as they are good quality and we're not a big fan of painting units just with the fact they can get knocked and scratched. We have redecorated the conservatory in a green colour (Laura Ashley hedgerow) but in the kitchen we have quite a few red appliances (cooker, kettle, coffee machine, toaster etc). Anybody got any suggestions. Lots of people have given us great ideas in the past from here. Thanks in advance :)

Also, I don't think the yellow is the right wall color with those cabinets.

I agree with Marci the backsplash is distracting. Notice how in the following photo the red kettle pops against the aqua tile. This would be a nice colour scheme for you too. Maybe a pale Aqua tile and wall colour and blue accent wall where radiator is, if rad can be covered so it wouldn't stand out too much.

Also after you paint you need to rearrange the art and shelving unit.
I think you either need to go opposite red on the colour wheel (blue-green) or very neutral for the red accents to stand out.

Success is in the details. The walls are too peachy in color. I have used one of the colors from your backsplash as a paint color.

I have added larger more colorful art on your wall and changed out the chandelier to a finish that contrasts to add more interest to the room.

I would center a larger wall mounted plate rack on the wall to display the dishes. I have lowered the artwork on the other wall. Art should be eye level and not lined up with door frames. There's no problem with your backsplash.

Thank you all for your comments. Much appreciated. I agree about the nic nacks and clutter - we're going to clear a lot of the little things away (already started clearing some of the counters). Anybody got any ideas what we can display on the shelves? We seem to have quite a lot of small shelves and ideally we want to have some objects that tie everything together and look cohesive. Unfortuently we dont have the budget to change the tiles but I really like the colour you have put on the dining area walls. What colour did you use? For the other walls what would be your thoughts (the colour we have at the moment is a cream but when the sun shines it does look yellow and we dont like it). I think the sun has done the same with the floor tiles as they are infact gray but have appeared blue in the photo.

Agree about the plate rack i'll have a look for a bigger one and some larger artwork. Added a coulple of suggestion photos with some existing art we have. Any ideas?

Finally the kitchen and diner used to be separate and then the previous owners knocked through which js great but it does mean the ceiling light is not central to the table. Eventually we shall look to get an electrican to move it however in the meantime i have seen some people use a chain and swag it slightly. Do you think this would look ok?

Thanks for all your comments guys. You are giving us lots of food for thought.

I think you have a nice looking kitchen overall! I would suggest finding a plain backsplash tile, especially as you have that raised area behind the cooker. Less "clutter" around the space will help too. You can definitely swag the lamp to a better position and down the road, have it moved properly - not a big deal.

Since you can't change the backsplash, you should rethink the red accents, which really don't work with it at all. Get rid of the clutter...its not necessary to fill every surface with something. Some negative space is ok.

We've bought a farmhouse table which looks a lot better than the table we had previously but now have to make decisions on the colours and photos to hang. The table is bigger than our previous one which means we can't move the plate rack to the centre of the wall as there wouldn't be enough room behind for people to pull their chairs out (due to the radiator). Planning to paint the walls a putty colour from homebase (attached a photo) and we were going to paint a light grey in the dining room like suggested but not sure on whether this would be too much and make the room quite small??

We are planning to paint the plate rack in Annie Sloan (not decided on the colour but thought we could also paint the skirting board and doors the same colour). Not sure whether to move the plate rack to the wall where the UK canvas is and then put a floor lamp in its place - have attached a photo of the ideal floor lamp.

We have some canvas which if we could use then this would be ideal (to save cost). They are not at the right height as when we redecorate we will put in new photo hooks. We don't want the walls to be too bear but equally we don't want it to be cluttered.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas that would be great. We are really stuck on this room. When we paint I will post update pictures :)

Second thoughts the uk canvas doesn't really go as its not very country looking. We could raise the dresser and put a clock on the wall where the space is or potentially a mirror?

The dish rack size wise would look good on the shorter wall. You could leave the other wall free of anything. A minimal space gives a more relaxing appearance sometimes.

Thanks Gary dean. I agree we are going to reduce the amount of things on the walls. Any suggestions on paint colour for the walls. We're not sure whether to do a two tone colour I.e a grey and then a putty. Thanks
