Wardrobe behind a door - do I have to have a slider?!

Hi all, I would love a furniture style fitted wardrobe for my bedroom. It'll be built in a big 9' alcove which is purposely in the wall. However, when my bedroom door is open, it blocks part of the alcove. I can't really move the door (too close to a stairs on the other side) - but I don't want a sliding wardrobe - do I have any choice?! Any clever ideas gratefully received!
