I agree with Maureen. White and white stair risers. I love the way the stairs look in Maureen's first photo.

I would choose the carpet for the stairs first. Then choose a paint color once you get some rug samples in your space. Try with different times of day, different light.

Did you mean to write gorgeous tiles instead of difficult tiles? They are a knock out. I agree with finding a neutral wall color that allow the floor to be the centerpiece. I would try to find a cement grey that matches the big grey diamonds, which are the primary color in the floor. That with a crisp white trim could be very sophisticated and beautiful.

Cement grey could be very jailhouse like. I would think lighter and brighter.

Skyline Steel SW1015 is a warm gray that would let the floor be the star. On my screen it appears to match the central part of the tile well.

Oh no, I definitely meant difficult! Thank you everyone for your replies. I agree they are stunning and I love them. I just can't find a good shade of paint to match them.

My problem with pure white is that the colour of the tiles are all warm colours, whilst white (a) looks very stark against them and (b) doesn't go with the style of the rest of the house.

the colours in the tiles are not grey, sadly, but an almost donkey brown, warm blue, terracotta, black, off-white, and a straw colour that is almost peach in parts. The colours are more like Maureen's second picture than the first one.

Having done lots of research, the most elegant option is to match the wall colour to the predominant colour in the tiles - and in my case, that is the exact colour that I dislike the most in these tiles.

However, my husband plastered the walls, and wants to paint them white first of all so any errors will be more obvious. Perhaps at that point I will fall in love with the idea of white paint.

What about that soft yellow color in the longer rectangle tiles? It would keep a hallway with eastern exposure light and bright. Yellow is tricky, be sure to pick a muted beige/yellow.

The soft yellow colour is in reality, an almost peach colour. That's the other thing about these tiles, the colour really does change throughout the day.

If you search Edwardian Tiles in Hallways on Pinterest, the visuals may really help when you see different colors used - mocha, grey and also deeper colors are not that attractive in my mind. For instance, the mocha and grey (which has similar tiles) below feel dull. The middle picture's - tiles have no white - works and feels fresher in comparison.

Definitely pick your carpet first! There are a million shades off off white for a reason and it is actually the hardest color to choose. Get samples of as many as you can, view w carpet, narrow down options to then paint a few on the actual wall. Good luck!

It's impossible to pick a color for you over the computer. Get your carpet, then try some paint samples.....

I'm aware of how difficult it is, having spent a lot of money on tester pots of paint in the last couple of months, none of which have been right. Which is why I came on here, asking if anyone has general ideas of what I could try. Rather than precise names of paints!

A warm, creamy white for sure. These tiles are gorgeous and powerful visually and they deserve a classic backdrop. Just pick up some paint chips or small test pots and try out 3 or 4 different whites. You're sure to find one that sings.

The above picture was for inspiration. Maybe take your cue and add a colored border to your stair runner and add fun colorful art. But keep the walls neutral. Not boring at all.

A shade of white really makes the floors sing, if it feels too white for you, it helps to lay colour chips down on the floor, find a match to one of its colours, then go with a shade of it.
