It's October, 2016. How is your build progressing?

October- Apples, pumpkins, changing leaves, busy builders! September was a huge month here, and the builders are definitely busy. It's so nice to see so much activity after the doldrums of a few years ago. Our weather here in SC finally broke, with highs in the 70's for a few days- Yay!

As most of you know, these monthly threads are for you, gentle reader, to tell us (and hopefully show us) about the house you are building, or are about to build. We love it all- raw dirt, foundations, new framing, drywall- it's all eye candy to us! Please share, and share often as your special project comes together. No house is too simple, or too grand.

Scone I am so sorry to hear your news. Your health is so important and I pray they can find treatments that will shrink or completely eliminate your tumors. Glad you have something fun and positive to focus on and you can move ahead with your dream home.

CP Well finally! So happy for you that things will start to move forward. Sorry about the sleazy pool guy! That is really bad business.

Murffy your house is just gorgeous! The stonework is beautiful and I too like the red windows with it. I like how it sits on a bit of a hill. Cant wait to see the finished product.

October I am so sorry this has happened. I can imagine it is very disheartening. Hope it gets resolved quickly.

Kimberly so very exciting! Happy times ahead but will be hard to pack up those 20+ years for sure. You must be thrilled all of the building is finally done.

Congrats on the new baby Ilovered. Grandchildren are the best !

Artemis your house is really coming along. I like the log cabin look and your kitchen is beautiful and your shower choice is nice too. You must be getting ready to move in.

Russ your kitchen looks fantastic! I love the pics of your floors. Gorgeous.

BuildinginTN your kitchen and great room are so nice! Love your floors!

I really love seeing everyone's pictures and reading of all your improvements.

The choices are so beautiful but different.

We closed on our Florida house on Wednesday. It has been busy and stressful but we have bought all the furniture and am now waiting for them to finish painting the inside. Funny enough, we changed the colors the Sherwin Williams girl helped us choose. I kept looking at them and didnt like them.

We chose what I wanted in the beginning for the main part of the home-SW Silvermist (who has that here? Forgot but remember it looking great!). We chose SW Assesible Beige for the guest bedroom and bath. I had chosen softened green to try and it was just awful with the camel tan colored rug. ICK.

I chose Tempered Taupe for my bedroom and master bath and the next color down for the tray ceiling that will have white crown molding.

Hoping the painting is done today but the crown molding will not go up till next weekend so we will not be officially moving in till beginning of November. Now to find linens and bed covers. Husband and I are quite tired and a bit testy at times :)

Kelsey,. Here's more of the Renova tile. This one is probably my favorite in the whole house.

BuildinginTN, I have a quick question for you? How tall is the great room in your house? It looks beautiful!

rmverb - Thank you! It looks awesome for a mudroom, just sent your photos to my fiance.

Also, no updates from insurance agent, but we've decided not to insure it and just keep up the private property signs for the next year while we wait to build. We got some legal advice and should be fine.

Not a house update, but I make and sell ornaments every year during the holidays and just made us an ornament of our new, forever town for the top of the tree this year <3 We may not live there yet, but I've already been super involved joined the cultural council, etc.

    FORE, Kelsey ;-)))))))))))))))))))

After two years of planning, our house has begun! The top photo is our old house, which friends of ours moved off and are giving it a new life on a different acreage. The second photo is taken from almost the same location as the first one. The basement is dug, and footings begin tomorrow!

The new house will be in a similar location to the old one, but facing outwards toward the main yard/driveway, rather than disappearing into the back with only the garage showing. The main house will face towards the driveway, which is South.

We have exterior walls on the first floor! This is the back of the house.

Well, just got an email that our GC just quit, or whatever... today is his last day.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think a lot of the issues we encountered and delays were due to his lack of care in doing his job, but he did have moments of brilliance and I always hate seeing someone lose their job.

    BUT...

Should have counter top pictures this weekend. They start tomorrow.

I have other photos but we tend to go in the morning to drop off the kids for school and it is dark and my awesome wife is not a photographer.. lol

So, will see if she wants to get pictures this evening, or update you all this Saturday.

@lakeerie - progress indeed! I had a lady tell me one time "everything around Euclid is the snow belt." I said, "Darlin, everything north of Dallas is a snow belt..." lol

@Jolene - More photos! less dirt! .. hehe. Grats on progress too

@Kelsey - isn't it great to be part of a local 'family'? We just had a party with the residents of the small community we are part of.

    @murffy - love the stone!

Oh, heck.. I posted it elsewhere, but here is the new stove, just because I like it ;)

Thanks to Trevor @ Eurostoves.. it is not hooked up but I love it already and everyone wants to steal it! ;)

Russ, gorgeous stove! We are fortunately not in the true snow belt near Lake Erie. We do get our share of cold wind off the lake but not as much snow as the get to the east of us. We definitely hope to have the majority of the exterior done before the really bad weather hits in a couple of months.

And the permits are in the builder's hands!

Yay, cpartist! So do you plan to break ground this month? Very exciting!

I can't get over how fast this prt moves. I went back tonight to see how far they got today and all the interior walls were up. It was so fun to get a feel for the start of the rooms on the first floor. I know not every part of the process will go this quickly but it was a very exciting day for me!

They stared the siding on Monday. The color is Carolina Colortones charcoal stain on Nichiha lap siding/shakes. Trim color is clay. We wanted a darker grey, which we definitely got. The stone should lighten things up as well as the stained beams and brackets we're using in a few places

The hardwood floors are also being finished. We went with Minwax Spice Brown on white oak

Rm....love the color of your siding and the color of your floors!

    Great choices.

    Rmverb--love the colors!

    Cpartist--so exciting!

Lakeerieamber--framing is so rewarding as you see your dreams become reality!

We are on record for one of the wettest Octobers ever...this was our main concern breaking ground later than we hoped, but can't change the weather! We will spend a few weeks drying out and we are ok with that. I snapped some pictures on a rare sunny day. Getting closer to our roof!

Rmverb...we got a bid on the Nichiha as well. When you get a chance can you post more pics of you siding? We are looking at your color and the Barnboard. Thank you.

    Jaime...what a vista!

    Octoberdana....any updates? What a bummer!

    last modified: 9 years ago

That's all they got done in two days. It seems to be a tedious process. I'll post more photos as more siding goes up.

Tedious and slow is good IMO. Perhaps that means that they are doing it right! Anyway, I think it looks really good.

Quick update, bathroom tiles are being finished up and countertops are installed! Few mistakes and rework of items but happy to see my master bath come together. Added a few photos. Two guest bathrooms have the same style but are purple or blue accent walls. The shared guest bathroom is black with a beautiful glass border.

Finally my favorite, master bath shower showcasing the niche. I think the tile and colors really went well together!

I'm just catching up as we were on a cruise from Quebec to NY last week and on Saturday we head down to FL for the winter. Just in time hopefully to see us break ground.

    Congrats I Love Red!

Murffy your house is just gorgeous!

    October how horrible. What happened?

    Nancy congrats on your house.

Jaimie how exciting and what a view!

rmverb, I love the color you chose for the siding.

knightzero90 - very cool tile. love the use of the bold colors and your master bath is beautiful.

Couple more pics of the siding. It really looks like real wood. The charcoal grey has some brown tone to it. Very nice product.

I haven't posted an update in quite awhile. Mostly out of frustration! But here is the latest blog describing our progress.http://www.chicagonow.com/downsize-maybe/2016/10/ding-dong-the-dumpsters-gone/

Rmverb...thanks for the siding pics. Looks great!

@Rmverb ... siding looks awesome ... what kind is it? I believer you had mentioned Carolina Colortones at some point, is this from them too?

It's Nichiha. Carolina Colortones stained one of their own colors.

The siding is gorgeous, rmverb! Love your windows, too! We decided on black on the exterior of our windows also. I was nervous to pick something out of the norm but I love the look!

Jamieeap - very jealous of the mountain views!

Exterior is complete with sod landscaping and a mailbox!

Kimberly, love your stone. Is it from a specific manufacturer or a local stone yard?

We worked with a local stone company from Omaha Nebraska. And thanks we love how it all turned out!

    Yippee! Cpartist!

Congrats cpartist! Finally a step in the right direction for you.

Back patio was poured. Now they can continue with the deck stairs next week.

Gas on. Slowly moving in some of our belongings. I haven't had a stove AND oven both working at the same time in 15 months out of the last 18 months. Husband is making breakfast, feels good. We are actually considering moving our furniture in next weekend... crazy.

Every time I see these cabinets, it makes me happy. Good to see the glassware looks nice in there.

Also, scaffolding down on the outside of the back of the house. I'm in love with the color. Going to use the same colors on the front.

Kimberly- love the black with that stone - looks gorgeous!

greenwoodframed - agree on that color! Very nice.

Progress is picking back up again for me, and I have a few
pics! (Although some are terrible cell phone pics, the "good" camera makes everything look nicer:)). Can we be moved in by the end of the year? (*crosses fingers*)

Framing for the screen porch, really looking forward to spending time here:

Masonry in progress, my front porch is nearly done

And…..drum roll……kitchen cabinets went in this week!

Here’s the thing; While I am not fishing for compliments (really), I do
want to express my anxiety over the cabinet colors. The
pic doesn't really show it well, but
regardless of the exact shade, it is a bold choice for me. Not a safe
    choice
that I can be confident in liking for a very long time. In the grand
    scheme of
life, kitchen cabinet colors don’t matter, but I’m still hoping I’ll
    like it
when the rest of the finishes come together. I'm a little surprised when
I find myself second guessing my decisions (and how hung up I get on
things I never used to care about), but right now I'm wishing I'd played
it safe and picked something more muted, like this:

Templating for the soapstone counters is scheduled for next
    week.

Soapstone will look great with those! I went with my first gut reaction on all my selections.. not a single one do I regret... while in the process before install I did start to worry so I understand!

Am_e I just came on to say how wonderful your house looks and I love those cabinets, and then read you're doubting yourself. Wait till it's all done because I think it will be spectacular. If I hadn't picked a quartzite that was so colorful and busy, I probably would have picked a color similar to yours for my cabinets. Honestly, I still might.

Am_e - the putty color of the other cabinets you posted is extremely on trend right now. Rather than being more "muted," I think you would have found them a more readily dated choice.

A bolder choice often defies and outlives the trends. The blue is beautiful.

Thank you all. Tone is hard to convey; I don't have severe "oh no what have I done " doubt, just mild anxiety about using so much color.

All of my favorite inspiration photos have colorful painted
cabinets, and I really like how the greens/blues look with the doug fir
    frame:

    Rock Ridge · More Info

It was more an example I could use to commiserate with others on the ups and downs of building, I wasn't expecting the drama (or is this just me?):

How to build a house Am_e style:

Step 1) excitedly make carefully considered decisions during the design phase
Step 2) materials come in/something gets built/see it in person,
Step 3) promptly second guess decisions from step 1 (oh no, what were you thinking? really? I should have done that the other way)
Step 4) wait a bit/sleep on it/see it completed - remember reasons for choices, realize it was a good decision after all, all is well.
Step 5) repeat until house is done

Am-e, I love those cabinets. What counters are going on there?

With the scaffolding down, we are actually getting sun in the kitchen. Feels like a real house.

Am_e and Greenwood your kitchen cabinets are incredible!! Everyone's progress is amazing. I am slowly piecing my cabinets together,. I have been fortunate to get all my cabinets at a Kraftmid outlet for under 2k...just got the island cabinets yesterday.

We are still framing and hopefully shingles will go on next week. Really hoping to get under roof before the weather turns.

Ame and greenwood...just beautiful. Looks like both of you are in the home stretch. Ame...I know it's hard not to second guess your self. I do it constantly. But trust yourself on this one. Your cabinets are very pretty.

Greenwood..I can't believe you got such a great kitchen in a city home. Well done.

    winona...pretty. Under 2K! Wow. What a bargain.

russ. I have stove envy. I have been cooking at my dds house on her gas stove, every night for 2 weeks since the new baby came. Really hate my cheap electric range in my temporary house. Did I say I hate it? Your range is pertyyy.

Arlene...so happy for you. Congratulations. I thought we might be starting together in the spring, lol. But I'm glad you are starting soon. Can't wait to see your house go up.

We've been moving into and settling into our new home, but came to check on everyone's progress. You all have such beautiful homes, and I can't believe how much things have progressed since I last checked.

Also want to send a big congratulations to cpartist! So happy things have finally gone your way and you can start to see your vision become a reality.

winonasue - way to go, that's a good deal on cabinets! We managed something similar (but not quite that good) at our current house, and its been great, no regrets.

greenwoodframed - soapstone for my counters (I'm excited) - I am loving your kitchen, all of your choices look great together, especially with that wood floor. The daylight really makes the space inviting, I would be quite happy in that kitchen:)

IloveRed - thank you, I'm sure my kitchen will be fine when its done, and I am very happy with the quality of the cabinets. I'm just learning that I apparently have some sort of color commitment phobia:) I went back over there again today, and it seems I just needed a few days to get used to it, I'm already feeling much more positive about it:)

cpartist - I am looking forward to pics!

Thank you sail_away, ILR and am_e. We walked by the lot today and they have the black plastic up around our lot, gravel for the driveway and wood fences around the trees. (They are very picky about saving trees here).

When we looked the lot today, we were amazed at how large it looks. (Remember we bought an extra 1/2 city lot). Yes it's still a small lot (9100 square feet) but compared to our neighbors, it's huge.)

Hoping things really start to move now.

Not without drama but we closed on October 27th. Builder doubled down on overtime and made our deadline.

You should post this in the November thread so we all see it.
