For the cabs, since you don't want to paint white, maybe you could get a lighter stain on them? Or SW recommends Pewter Tankard with colonnade, and I think that would be stunning.

I like the table and chairs a lot. Maybe new fabric in a rustic brown or forest green though.

Also, what is happening with that drape thing on top of the uppers? Is it like tarp from painting the ceiling, or...?

The cabinets make the room feel dark. I would chose a lighter color and paint them. You don't have to paint them white, either.

Here are a couple of ideas.

Change out the range vent to something either modern or rustic. This pic is more modern, but probably also more affordable then a copper or other metal hood which would be more rustic. I also like the backsplash and pulls in this pic:

I would also look around at you cabinets and see if there is one that could be replaced by a rustic set of shelves. Use the upper shelves for decor and only the bottom one for dishes. The cabinet to the right of the sink is a possibility though it is not very large.

You could paint the light areas of the table and chairs black.

If you like the cabinets, then keep them -- natural wood seems a good fit for your style. You might save up for lighter counters, however, to help keep the room light. Other ideas seem good.

"We're painting today" seems a bit last-minute to be asking for advice. Go ahead and paint the walls, then provide an updated photo so we can get an idea of what you're working with moving forward. You will get better advice that way.

Also, make sure you turn on all the lights before you take pictures. The colors don't show up correctly if the photo is taken in the dark.
