Need help with granite selection.

Seeing advice on which granite to choose for my white kitchen. These are the only options available through the builder. We will be doing the cabinet on the left. Any design advice much appreciated! Hoping to keep my current family room furniture (open floorplan) which is a brown sectional sofa..

Far right was my first choice but it depends on the flooring. If you want gray flooring then I'd use the one on the left.

Also in agreement to choose the Dalas White. As countertops are very expansive in the kitchen you want them to be eye catching but still fit in with the cabinetry, backsplash, and colors in surrounding rooms. The Dalas White will look beautiful with the white cabinetry and the hints of brown and grey will fit nicely with your brown sectional.

You can see in the photo below how the countertop stands out nicely but the soft taupe tones blend with the adjacent family room. (and the cat)

Far right is my favourite as it will go with many colour palettes. The one in the middle is reading a bit pink on my computer. Good luck :)

Do you have upgrade options? Or an option to do plain white tile? Those granites are the lowest grade possible. If you have to choose one and have no other options, go with the one on the far right. If you can go with tile and do granite later, without your builder who probably puts a massive mark up on it, do that.

Thank you all. @dee Sanchez, believe it or not, these are the highest upgrade the builder offers! Crazy right! @beverlyFLADeziner, you prefer the shaker style?

I also prefer the shaker style....more current, yet traditional, and it goes with everything. Also, they have fewer areas for dusting than raised panel. The two cabinet choices seem to be in different whites. I like the shaker in the white shown with the far right granite.

The granite on the far right is my choice and here is why: it is far less of a busy pattern. I have a busy granite and regret the choice.

I agree with the dalas white. It's one level higher so it isn't quite as "builder grade". I also agree that the shaker is a better choice. The raised panel is a much more traditional look.

I would be very careful with the dalas white granite because those slabs can turn out more grey than white, unless you are picking the slab in person. Just not sure which color scheme you really want since all three choices are very different

Right granite, and I also would do the shaker style. The raised panel looks outdated to me.

i vote shaker. can't you forgo that countertop and go after market? I hate it when these builders offer 2-3 choices. you know they do that because these are the leftover slabs that no one wants, and he gets for pennies, right? can't you just get a credit, go pick out your own, pay the difference and have the builder install it? I mean, if this was my home, I want what I want.

btw, they have pre-fabricated granite/quartz countertops for 500 dollars in about 30 different colors, including marble and quartz. I'll bet your builder is charging you at least 5K for these rejects. yes?

pre fab. I couldn't fit all of them in the photo. there's a whole other wall of colors

Far right on the granite although you probably can't go wrong. The other two might have strong undertones when you see larger slabs. Stay light.

Shaker cabs are much "newer" and more current looking. The others will be harder to keep clean with all the small ledges on drawers and doors.

do the raised panel (the other looks more like a bath vanity door). Ask the builder to see the whole slab of granite before choosing. If not possible then choose the lighter one and use this as back splash too.

I vote with the group - Dallas White. And if you like raised panels, go with it. I am pretty sure every new house in the United States is putting in 'Shaker style' cabinets.

dallas white is same economy level granite as new caledonia (gray) and that pinkish veneciano style in the midle. i have never seen dallas white as a level two :) just put formica and save your money for normal counters and tile backsplash. if you chose to go with dallas white, trust me, you need to look at the slab, some of them are more grayish, sometimes has very bage background, but worse - that brown/burgundy color in dallas white might become pink, depending on the lot of the slab.

OZ has a point. many people come on here after the fact to complain that their countertops don't look anything like the sample. the first question asked is, "did you see the slab before they cut it". remember, you aren't getting the best quality slabs. if you can't do an aftermarket, then get the cheapest option you can with no backsplash. then do it yourself after you move in. trust me, you will be much happier.

Thank you all so much for your insight and tips. These are the other options in terms of granite, Like I said, these are all level 1 and 2 upgrades (highest is level 2 and SO basic!) The glazed cabinet was also something i was considering but from most of your opinions i think this may look more dated to you, no? And I didn't think these other granite choices would go w the linen cabinet which is what I was thinking I would go with? Do any of you like these additional granite choices or have experience w the colors? Thank you all, i needed some major direction!!

    last modified: 9 years ago

we are giving you direction. everyone has said no to the glazing. but if you like it, get it. if you want to pay extra for the level II upgrade for those sub-par choices, then go ahead. A few have given you direction on how to get around that. All 3 of those darker granite choices are the super basic colors. no way should you be paying an upgrade for those. Again, you've been told how to get around that one. out of curiosity, what does a level II upgrade run? do they just have a builder basic that come w/the house for no charge?

It's your money. If you want to pay the builder for those choices, then choose the one you like. Everyone here has told you what they like. It's like you're holding a gun to our head and say "choose one"! None of us here would voluntarily pick any of those. but most agree that the Dalas White is the better of the 6. So pick what you like, but it sounds more like you're settling.

Thank you! Yes @Beth, I know you all are and I really appreciate it. I just meant that I am all over the place with these choices. While building a brand new home its hard to think about what work you are going to need to do when you get in. I was really trying to avoid that, but yes it does feel like I am settling. And I just mentioned the glazed cabinet now because that was another option that I didn't show earlier.

I would ask the builder how much you are paying for the granite, then tell him to deduct that from your bill and go to a stone yard and choose the one you like. If you go with one of these I would choose shaker cabinets and the granite on the right.

They are charging $4995 for level one granite and $5495 for level 2.

    last modified: 9 years ago

OMG. T Nas, seriously, for that 2nd price, you could go pick any slab of top granite or quartz and have it installed by a fabricator for that price.

that builder is making about 4500 off of you. that's in his pocket. guarantee it!

just tell them to give you the basic laminate countertop (no extra charge, right?) and no splash. move in. now go shop for the granite you want.

or grab the pre-fab granite top for $500 and have it cut to fit for another 800 or so!!

taj Majal quartzite. you could have this kitchen for what he's charging you

    or this one

    or this......get my point??

yes! got it lol. thank you. love the first and second pic!

ok good! if you do that, make sure they don't secure that 'whatever countertop' you will be using temporarily, too well to the cabinets. tell them it's coming up so you don't want to damage the cabinets below it. just have them dry fit it and that's it.

This is a good lesson in purchasing what we call a "production" house. The builder is putting up basically identical homes, with low cost finishes to keep overall square footage cost low and still make a profit while taking on all the risks of building. Speed of building is achieved by having limited choices. This type product (housing) is not semi-custom, or custom. If you want to select all your finishes and elements in your home your price per square foot goes up substantially. It costs this type builder money and time to go outside their model per square foot. So, since this is type home you are purchasing, make the best choices you can and assess changing costs for later. Remember, those changes are also cash out of pocket which can impact your cash flow and might be unrealistic. So, I have to speak up for builders who are trying to offer this level product to customers who can't afford a higher priced home. Do I like any of the choices you have, no. But I think the price range of this home is what is driving these choices. I think the white shaker cabinet is a fine choice for cabinet. I might even choose the darker black granite since it would be best overall of choices. It is also the most consistent in the slabs coming out of mountain. (Far left over white cabinet sample.)

@OZ here is floorplan. We are doing the morning room, so kitchen will be as shown with that.

I'm in the process of having glazed cabinets installed and they are gorgeous. Do I care that they aren't the "in" thing? Not in the least. I'm sick of seeing shaker white on almost every page everywhere. IMO it is so overdone. Almost as bad as white subway tile.
I want to love being in my kitchen and glazed just flipped my switch.
If your first instinct was raised panel, then unless you are planning on selling soon, go with what you like best.

Something to be said for that Pam! If you do decide on the raised panel with the glaze, then go with the more warm colored granite. The Carmel Fantasy (more consistent) or the Gialio Ornamental. Either one would look good with the creamier raised panel, with our without the glazing.

They are over charging you for the granite! I got a "lvl 4" which is Giallo Ornamental, not great but not terrible for the price of $2,270. That Dalas White was the builder standard for us and your builder is labeling it as a lvl 2! Your kitchen would have to be very large to warrant the price they are charging. Here is the layout of our kitchen for comparison, our island is 7' long so we have a large slab for the price we paid.

I agree with everyone else and say just go with standard and upgrade after you move in, you will save money and be able to choose your slab!

I've read your whole thread and going to add my two cents in by agreeing that you're being ridiculously overcharged for that level of granite. My level 2 Vyara Beach was $2500 installed for about the same amount of granite your floor plan calls for. I agree with Beth that you should just take the laminate and find what you want later on. Good luck with your new build!
