What do you want? TV viewing, seating for how many, craft/hobby space, reading, computer? What is the climate? How many people in the family?

I would like the room to serve as a den/library/office with seating for up to four adults. The climate is mild (North Carolina.) We have five in the family. My wife and I, with our three small kids. This room is mainly for me as the kids will have their designated spaces and I would like a little sanctuary.

Thanks insidesign. I agree that something needs to be done with the ceiling. By "box out" do you mean coffered? The room is not as long as it appears in the picture. I did not think the far wall had enough area to add bookshelves. Do you have any pics of what you mean?

Seating area gathered in front of fireplace and windows. Four club chairs (possibly 2 in leather, 2 in fabric, all same frame and style) gathered around a circular coffee table. AAnchor with rug.

Desk in foreground, facing in to room. (Choose one where all sides can be visible.) Storage to keep it uncluttered. When entertaining, it can serve as buffet. Bookcases on wall opposite, possibly with closed storage in lower portion.

Lighting, recessed high-efficiency LED cans, plus desk lamp and standing lamps in corner by fireplace.

Thanks Soberg! I have an idea on what you mean with the four chairs/seating area, but not sure on where you mean to place the desk. I have attached a pic below which represents what I think you are speaking of. Do you have any pics to show how to place the desk and book cases you refer to? It sounds like you are suggesting placing the desk in the middle of the room?

Can't tell how far the chimney breast and FP extend into the room, but a pair of window seats on each side could expand the seating arrangements and kids love them. A library table is a must as well as comfortable specialty reading chairs - may some of these done as Soberg suggested.

I love to see a narrow room divided in two. I can't tell from your pix if yours is big enough or not. Make sure your rug is large enough to take away from the alley look.

Yes, I believe there are. They appear to be seperated in the middle like an old saloon door. Not sure that I like them, but they appear to be part of the original design.

I'd like to see those shutters replaced with plantations, but not a priority.
