I'm also not a fan of "decorating" the tops of cabinets. The decorating should occur in and around your living space. Counters are a good place to start. Then walls, etc. Whatever you do, don't put a lot of fussy stuff like fake flowers or silk plants up there.

There's about 3 more sets of the cabinets throughout my kitchen so I thought it looked pretty bare--(I only submitted a pic of the one set of cabinets)

Pier 1 has some beautiful HUGE platters. You can display it upright on an easel. Then, get the ladder to even use sometimes! :)

Extra space over a cabinet is a great place to display a collection of objects. It's hard to tell from the pic what your style is, looks like a traditional new construction home so I would look to bring in some character pieces. You would want the scale to be on the larger size since you'll be viewing the items from a distance. In the second photo you have less space and would want to be careful not to go too large and make the space look cramped. Example Some large glass vases and platters in the alcove with smaller glass bowls and accents spread over the others. The key is the "theme". Keep it cohesive. Chose items of varying heights and sizes, as well as items that have similar color tones. Pick up the accent color in the room with some bold choices. They could also double as extra serving pieces for a big gathering. .

I understand what you're saying. Is all the rest of your kitchen just the way you want it? Are all the accessories in place? If the answer is yes and you still feel something's missing then on the cabinets with the most space between the cabinets and the ceiling add just a few good size plates or platters on stands. You could also add rope lighting to the cabinet tops. You never see the actual rope only the soft light it gives.

I personally am not a fan of gaps from cabinet top to ceiling. Our current house is cabinets to ceiling and my new house will go to ceiling as well. To keep the uppers looking flowing, I would hire a cabinetmaker to enclose those spaces (matching or complementing the current cabinets) and with glass doors you can light them from the inside also for additional drama, for display purposes. An alternative, add crown moulding and finish the spaces into open display spaces with lighting. Good luck

OK, I give up.....it was a pic of beautiful big platters, as Darzy suggested.

The pictures seems to show that you have a high ceiling. It feels that the height of what you would put there would be too high and you won't see it very well up there. Personally, I would not put anything there, I find it gives a cleaner look.

Personally, I would find it such a pain to keep going up and cleaning stuff when it would be just easier just to clean the top-that's a big enough chore in itself. I would leave it as it is if you can.

I agree with momof5x. I would like to add that my sister had the idea of placing a wax paper on top of the her cabinets. It is the perfect width to cover the top without seeing it on the molding. It is easier to clean because a lot of grease accumulates with time in these areas, you just need to replace the wax paper.

While I'm not a fan of stuff on top of kitchen cabinet, you do have a big space there, so if it bothers you then I would find one of two very large items per set of cabinets. Items like these:
1. A set of two good sized pictures, or one long skinny horizontal picture.
2. A large pig or cow statue, at least 18" high.
3. An antique copper washtub.
4. Two platters, large and extra large, on stands, with the large one slightly in front of the extra large one.
You may need to set these items up on books or boards that don't show in order to raise them above the moulding at the top of the cabinets.
