You have enough space on that wall to hang panel art like this one. Find art that you love, it is your home and your heart will reflect in the art you choose.

I'm not sure you can really have this entry make a statement -- it's mostly stairs. Agree that a vertical piece of art or wall-hanging could be spiff on the wall straight ahead, but otherwise, I'd focus on function. A nice rug/mat here, maybe a small entry table against the wall to the left, with a bowl for keys and mail...

Is there a hanging light fixture? That might be one place you could do something kind of spiff. But really this is a spot where people won't linger, so I'd put most of my energies elsewhere.

That is a great idea! What do you think about a accent color? I am painting this weekend to refresh everything in BM Revere pewter in a matte.

Her is the view from a different angle. The top of the stairs is the living room. There is a lot is blank wall to the left and right sides of the door.

This is a common split level entry. Is there a junction box for a light on ceiling?

There is a light above the door. The clearance is about 2 feet.

There is not one near the taller ceiling.

Ok I think I see what you are dealing with. Lighting, or lack thereof is huge issue for this entry. I think an accent wall with great color would help a lot. I will look for some inspirational photos for you. Bbl

I don't see how you can accent any wall of this space -- they all bleed into stairwells or are otherwise too odd to be worth playing up. Must every room in the house "pop" these days??

Here is an entry that might be a better "light" approach for you. White walls and using black as accents.

The white on these walls definitely help brighten this space. Of course, there are great windows there, but I think with your darker wood stairs, you can play up the space nicely by painting that little wood trim on the railing glossy black, and the walls Highly Reflective White by Sherwin Williams. Then you could add some metal details by finding some perhaps nail head type trim for the stair railing on the sides. That would have to be researched to make sure you could accomplish that. I would paint your front door glossy black as well. Not sure what the light is in the entry, but I would find a way to add more lighting even if you had to "swag" a light that would help bring better lighting into the space. I have to think about that a bit but that could be such a plus.

acm I don't think every room has to pop. Overall I would like the entry to feel clean and calm but with some sort of personality. Something that when you walk it feels nice. I live in a neighborhood with many houses with similar floor plans. I would like this to at least have something different than the builders grade cookie cutter entry.

Flo Mangan, I think that is a great idea. I have also been considering painting the door as well.

If you can use nail heads in silver you could do a decorate trim on that wood railing too. Then there are "silver chain curtains" that you could hang at your side lites. They would hang better and be compact in the tight quarters. btw, whoever did your stairs did a darn nice job. Kudos.

I wonder if you have any large shawls perhaps with long fringe or any antique rugs, you could drape over the opening in the living room down the wall and thumb tack into place. You could do the same over the other railing to bring color and texture once you have painted the walls white for a nice background. It can be better than art.

TIP on glossy black painting. Make sure you clean surface and rinse very well. Then, apply with good brush (angle is best for this) and do it when temperatures are not too hot and sun isn't shining directly on surface. It will be streaked if you don't follow those tips. Don't apply too thick, or too thin. Allow plenty of dry time, like 2-3 days between coats in case you think you need a second coat. Glossy and black takes long time to "cure" (dry thoroughly).
