I think you can go with absolutely any finish on your pulls and knobs! I'm going to use silvered gold for my white cabinets and have a brushed bronze above my island. I'm using stainless appliances and sink. I plan on mixing metals throughout the house we're building. As for where to use pulls or knobs, I'm using knobs on upper doors and pulls on drawers.

Love the counters!

I would go with a simple backsplash... not seeing brick in this kitchen.

traceyflutterbies, thanks for the feedback. Do you (or others) know if it's "okay" to mix finishes? For example if the island had a different finish on the hardware than the rest of the kitchen.

Sorry, Agata, but a "reddish brick" backsplash would not be a good choice with your beautiful counters....to rustic, too country, too contradictory. If you are concerned about too much white, you could select a subway tile in a pale gray which matches the veining in the counter. A simple way to add color to a kitchen is to paint the walls and the ceiling a soft color such as aqua or sea glass green. My white kitchen has a very pale silvery gray called Silver Spoon (By Dunn- Edwards) on the walls, ceiling and island. You could paint your walls white but use color in accessories: towels, canisters, utensil holder, potholders and window treatments. And if you have some wall space, art can add color.

I would stick to one finish for your hardware. I like the choices that Porter Edun gave you for your backsplash. I would be careful to make sure the backsplash doesn't have any red in it because of your island and floor color.

While I like the reddish brick in your photos, I don't think it pairs well with your lovely counters. I'd stick with something simpler and let the counters be the star. I also think things will feel less white once your floor is uncovered. It'll bring in a lot of warmth.

What about pendant lights this these above the island?

Is the kitchen enclosed in it's own room or is it open to another? If open to another what's the furnishings, etc?

Porter Edun, the kitchen is pretty much in it's own room, however it opens into the living room on one side (behind the island). The other door goes into a hallway off the entrance/foyer. The living room doesn't have anything yet - so far we have ordered a grey sectional couch and once that comes in, we will be looking for advice how to finish that room too :) We like the "transitional" style.

Yes there are pot lights along the perimeter and there will be pot lights inside the cabinets with the glass too. To be honest, there's a ton of light in the kitchen (two windows, and a sliding door to the backyard just behind it too) so the two light fixtures above the island are more for show than for necessary light.

The island is 8-9 feet long... We have electrical for two light fixtures, so I guess they'd have to be about 23" wide, if I assume the max (18") from the edges and between them.

I was asking about lighting only because if you don't have some installed when you get samples of backsplash tile it's very hard to see the true color with the counter veins, etc... since you have plenty of light as well as ceiling light you will better be able to see the samples in different lighting conditions from morning in to evening.

23" wide is too large IMO.... When you can get the exact length and width posted.

If you do two lights then you will want slightly larger pendants than if you do three they are going to be a bit smaller (than 2) in scale.

Depends on the look you want... you could do multiples of 7". Best to know the exact size of the island both length and width...

So 40" wide and 103" long, if that helps. I think we are limited to two fixtures unfortunately because of the electrical work that's been done already.

We had a piece made for below our vent which is a stainless steel panel. I've been very happy with it and it's also a lot easier to clean given my husband is a lover of cooking and also a lover of making a giant mess when he cooks :)

Interesting. I'm not sure I've ever heard of this approach (with the stainless steel instead of a backsplash below the vent).

You can certainly use an oil rubbed finish for the hardware-but you are by no means limited to that finish. Polished nickel with white is probably the most popular color combo we run into. Lightly antiqued and polished brass also look pretty great.

But what about the brown island?

The red brick you refer to has a German Mortar smear over the brick to obtain that appearance.

If you are going for a bronze finish for your pulls/knobs (not that they need to match) then a light like the glass you posted above would look nice, but larger since the island is 103" and you have two light boxes.

I'm thinking between 14" at the widest portion of the light to 16". Some people like a little bit larger light if it's a spare light as in glass or lantern vs. a solid piece.

The height of the ceiling is important for a number of reasons: the height of the light (vs the width in this case as we know) if it's an 8ft ceiling then taking in to consideration the height of the pendant factored in to how low it will hang so it's not, "too tall). If it's a higher ceiling down rods generally won't work. Chain is the best option as it can be adjusted in either case. Also, with higher ceilings they can manage a bit larger scale light.

So, I should have asked this long ago when I asked about the width and the length of the island... How high is the ceiling? Did the builder put the 2 boxes in already?

It's a builder yes, just want you to be sure they are spaced properly and no mistake was made.

The height of the ceiling is 8 feet, and yes the boxes are already there. They are equally spaced, so that's not going to be an issue (luckily).

I think the lanterns are beautiful, but I just can't see them in our house to be honest. I think the solid metal pendants are more our style. I really like the clear glass ones as well but I'm not sure my boyfriend is sold on those (yet*).

Nothing wrong with solid metal... I'd go for a cone shape a bit more stream line or slightly dressy for lack of a better word than the large dome IMO.

In reading the crystals are acrylic and not glass.... I found a review some place that said essentially, "the crystals look kind of cheap up close, but love the light when it is hanging".
