Over the range microwave not over the range

I just currently bought all new kitchenaid appliances including an over the range microwave that I was not intending to place over the range. Rather, I would place it next to the fridge and have a custom range hood made for over the range.
Has anyine done this and have photos to share? Is this a bad idea? Here's some photos I found as inspiration :)
