We are gunite builders and prefer the flexibility to create any design, overcoming difficult site conditions and longevity. Gunite pools are more expensive than vinyl or fiberglass.

Northern NJ and the immediate areas are mostly gunite or vinyl pools. Most of the fiberglass installations I'm aware of, are mostly at the shore points.

Fiberglass pool installations are a bit tricky most importantly when it comes to properly backfilling and supporting the structure. That may be the bulging incidents your reading about.

Sizes and shapes are limited as well.

In the 60's and into the 70's, a combo fiberglass pool kit was available from a company called Polynesian Pools. The kit consisted of fiberglass walls that were bolted together which in turn sat on a pre-poured concrete floor. A safety ledge ran the perimeter which was the fastening point.
A sealant was used between the walls and the floor. There were lots of these pools built in the tri-state area.

Most of these pools would leak at the joints and the fiberglass walls would chaulk up over time. They are problematic.

New fiberglass pools are one piece. As far there longevity, I don't think are enough in the area to gauge that.

I'm not super comfortable with the freeze/thaw conditions we have with a product like this. A manufacturer may say otherwise.
