Oh, very good, floral!! I was going through the plant listings for that botanical garden but got bored and gave up after 15 pages of plants starting with the letter 'A' :-) It must be a rather magical place with that huge variety of tropical plants!!

Thank you floral_uk that must be Bauhinia divaricata. I thought the leaves were very distinct. I remember seeing leaves of Hong Kong Orchids with rounded butterfly leaves and may be this is a cousin.

...and yes gardengal48 Fairchild is a huge place with lots of plants and open space.

Oddly, when searching for plants with that very distinct leaf shape, nothing turned up. Maybe I was not using the correct terminology

Yes, Hong Kong Orchid tree is another Bauhinia.

GG, I've seen Bauhinias growing so I recognised the leaves but not the flowers of this particular one. There are also typical Bauhinia seed pods in the photo. I just needed to pin down the species.
