Nightlight flashes like strobe; Dangerous?

last modified: 6 years ago

I bought 4 Energizer 4 in 1 LED Power Failure night lights that also function as an emergency light and a flashlight. They plug into a regular wall outlet. At first they worked well. However, after a time they began to flash. Now they flash repeatedly almost as fast as a strobe light. I have LED bulbs in lamps that are plugged into the same outlets. All the lamps work fine. I have no dimmers. Should I have an electrician check all my circuits? I am not currently using them.

If all four lights started flashing at the same time, no matter which room they were in use, I'd suspect you have a low voltage situation with your incoming power and, yes, an electrician should check it out. The lights may be more sensitive to voltage levels than your other LED bulbs.

Make sure nothing is in front of the lights. These night lights have a photo-sensitive control. If their own light is reflected back to them by any object in front of them, they will strobe exactly as you describe.

I have seen this behavior with many other photo-controlled night lights. It's not a defect, it's just the way they work.

Sammy: they did a slow flash at neighbor, which is why I'm concerned about power levels in my house.

HU-41711: They started out ok for a few weeks and then went crazy. I'm supposing that some element in the light got fried and now they are reacting to even slight variations.

DavidR: They have been in wide open spaces. Originally, they worked fine, but over time each of the 4 turned into disco lights.

I checked out the Amazon reviews for these lights. There's a simple answer: your wiring is fine; the light is just a junk product. Send all 4 to the electronics recycling place if you have one; otherwise bin them.

IMO, Energizer is outright nuts to damage their own reputation by licensing their trademark to manufacturers who sell garbage like this.

    Some review quotations for you:

"They would still light the way if the power went out, but they blink and flicker when the power is on. It seems like they can't decide if they are receiving power or not, so they switch between nightlight mode and power failure mode continuously. "

"The problem seems to be in the dawn to dusk light sensor, after a few months they flash on and off like a strobe light and nothing you can do will stop it."

"very disappointed because it started flashing a very bright annoying light as if there were an emergency."

"some are completely dead, a few are just blinking randomly, they are in two different houses, same problem."

"one by one they started to fail -- flickering on and off rather than staying on. When they are plugged in to be nightlights, they flash like strobe lights"

David: I called an electrician to check the house wiring because the lights generally worked at a neighbor's house. I had a new electrical panel put in last year. Just to be safe and have peace of mind. (Different electrician coming to be really sure.)

When you get a clean bill of health from the electrician, please leave a one-star review of this product on Amazon so that others are warned about your experience.

I already left a one star review for the product and since I consider this a health hazard (people suffer from flicker vertigo) I also gave the vendor a 1 star review for selling an unsafe product.

ETA: vendor asked that I send the lights back to them (prepaid) to that they can test them. They are replacing the lights. I would prefer a refund, it was more than I expected.

I have the same problem. Mine is the GE 4-in-1 Power Failure Night Light. It slowly blinks in one bathroom. When I test it in other rooms, it works fine.

It looks just like the Energizer model in the photo. My packaging says "By Jasco". I suspect that both Energizer and GE are made by the same company.

I called the 800 number. The support person claims that some light somewhere must be leaking into the room. Totally unhelpful.

I think the reflection theory is helpful. It may set up a feedback loop. The nightlight's own sensor is picking up its own light reflecting off nearby surfaces. I plan to cover the sensor with black electrical tape and see what happens.

From another Amazon Q&A: "I responded to another customer a couple of days ago because I had experienced the flicker too, but did not have an answer. That challenged me and I inquired further. Yes, it has/had a flicker problem. Apparently this newer version addresses that issue, is in near identical packaging, but is marketed under the GE name instead of Energizer."

How about a night light plug-in? Can someone here recommend me something good?

I've already bought automatic night lights with LEDs that I really like how they work and I don't think I would change them to anything else.

I've already bought automatic night lights with LEDs that I really like how they work and I don't think I would change them to anything else. I like it because it has smart illumination and automatically turns on as the ambient light becomes insufficient so intelligently adjusts itself throughout the night, which is ideal, especially if you have children in the house just like me. In addition, it comes in eco-friendly packaging, so no more hassle of changing bulbs. In this way, I can save both the environment and my wallet.

I have this item, but the strobing didn't start until I'd been using them for three years. I thought maybe the unit was just getting old. Until today, the light worked as it should and was a dependable night light, but the strobing has me worried so I have pulled them out until I can have my electricity checked (they seem to be working fine in another plug which would seem to indicate to me the problem is with my wiring and not the unit, but after reading these comments, I'm beginning to wonder).

How long were they plugged into the original outlet continuously? i.e. how long since they were unpowered?

I would think any electronic problem inside the thing would manifest itself within a few minutes of being powered up, but it's possible that it could take a lot longer. So when you unplugged them and then tried them in a different outlet, they worked, at least for a few minutes. If you leave one or more plugged into different outlets for a couple days, what is the result?

I seriously doubt there is anything wrong with your electricity, especially in light of all the reviews saying they strobe after being used for awhile.

Flashing tells you there was a power outage. Unplug the light. It should illuminate. Press the power button on the side to toggle through the lighting modes until its off. It should go through dim room light, bright room light, flashlight, off. Plug it back in. Done.

Cheap Chinese garbage. Flashing means the internal batteries are shot. Need to be replaced. I bought the GE version at Walmart 2-3 years ago. Plugged in to same outlet since new, switch was set to dim room light since I got it. Just started acting up today. Same problem plugged in to any outlet. Seems to flash a code sequence for an error. At $10.97 it's trash. To bad they couldn't make it last a few more years. It's hard on batteries being in standby for so long and not being cycled. Just cheap garbage. BTW, I never had it 'flash after a power outage'. It would always operate normally afterwards.

In case anybody is interested here's what I did to correct this problem:

    1) Unplug the unit from the wall outlet

    2) Turn the flashliight on with the switch to the bright room setting. Actually any of the light settings would work but this will be the quickest.

    3) leave the light 'ON' and powered off the batteries as if there was a power outage for several hours to deplete the batteries.

    4) once the batteries are depleted or nearly depleted plug the unit back in to charge. It should now function normally. The reason for the cycling is that if you don't have a power outage or cycle the batteries periodically they can get a 'memory' and the self test will show they are @ 'Low voltage'. If you exercise the batteries (discharge and charge) it will refresh them. Hope this helps. Mine is back to normal now. This device is actually classified as a 'rechargeable flashlight' so you NEED to cycle the batteries every now and again. Good luck!

Yeah, you should really run them down once a month or so and then recharge them.
