Kitchen sink leak

While trying to fix a kitchen sink leak I've totally removed the nut from my multi turn valve. Now the nut it's not catching on to the thread to re- tighten it. All the attachments look to be in good condition, no hard water build up or corrosion. I've already tried cleaning with steel wool.. Any other suggestions

Not sure if you are referring to the kitchen faucet or the shutoff valve below the sink (photo helps a lot here). I believe what you are talking about is the packing nut (old style).

Usually the reason that it's not catching is because it's not fully pressed into the mating threads. That can happen because the faucet isn't closed or new packing material was added and it's not compressed.

Be sure the valve is fully closed and push the packing nut into the mating threads firmly while turning.

If I'm wrong about this being the packing nut - post a photo so we understand the issue.
