is it normal for dirt to be really hard?

Hello!

This is probably a dumb question, but do other people find that their soil can be surprisingly hard?

I was trying to plant out a couple seedlings last week, and I tried two different places in beds with established perennials in them ... and it was really hard to dig!

The dirt was very dry and I was using a little hand trowel. I guess the sprinklers must not get these spots. One was next to a big bird of paradise, and the other spot was right next to lawn. And, it has dandelions growing in it, but not big ones.

I will try again with a shovel next time, and maybe I will water first. Though, I worry - if the ground is that hard, maybe I should keep my plants in pots?

Is this normal? I was just wondering. Sorry if it's a dumb question! It's been a while since I planted anything new in the dirt.

Thanks for any input.
