Hard to know what to suggest. Are you doing this yourself? are you handy with carpentry, or...? The main thing that's "dated" is the cupboard doors below. But honestly, it all kind of goes with the swoopy fireplace surround, so I might just leave it and/or paint them closer to the wall color to de-emphasize them. Then use for a mix of books and objects, not too busy. Good art over the fireplace in the middle.

Paint them an interesting color, including the tracks.

How about wallpapering the inside with something more your style. Lots of fun wallpapers around right now. Could you remove the doors also and wallpaper inside there as well so it looks unified?

I love the character of these booksleves. I'd paint the back of the shelves a lovely dark blue * or abold color you lie or have elsewhere in the house. Or wallpaper the backs

Paint them the same color as the wall so they blend in more. The cabinet doors are the worst part about them. Perhaps remove the doors? Are there shelves inside?
