I need to install a light fixture in my daughters room and I’m a little confused by this electrical box… Any advice would be greatly appreciate it. Do I need to remove this plastic piece from the outlet box, so I can install the crossbar? I have installed mini light fixtures and I’ve never seen a plastic piece like this.

The joist is right behind the non open part of the box sl no, you cant remove that.

What was previously there, a fan? Mount the new light simply the same way the old one was.

The light was just capped beforehand. It’s new construction.

This is what you have. Use a standard strap that came with your new fixture and screw it directly into the joist.
