Walk in pantry cabinet design

After being in our house almost a year, we are finally trying to get our pantry in order. I am just having some trouble deciding if we should take them all the way up to the 9ft ceiling to match the kitchen cabinets or stop at 8ft as our cabinet guy designed them? Also, struggling with the rollouts in the base cabinets. I have attached our floorplan, a few pictures of the space now. I will add photos in the comments of what has been designed as of now, and how I am thinking of changing it. Let me know your thoughts and thank you in advance!

Also, the floorplan is slightly different because we changed the door to swing the other way. This is the current design. Base cabinets 20” deep, wall cabinets over the base are 12” and the other cabinet is 16” deep.

Here is what I am thinking of changing it to. The only thing with the wall is it would go to the ceiling.

We are all going to have different needs and wants for a pantry.

For me, a walk-in pantry is a utilitarian space and not where I chose to spend money on cabinets.

I used the ELFA system from The Container Store for my pantry with adjustable shelves and drawers.

I have 11 ft ceilings in there and used the height. I store rarely used stuff up there and keep a 3-step stepladder in there for quick access when needed.

The more storage, the better. So, at first thought - yes to taking your pantry storage all the way up.

I agree with @chispa. We did closet factory (melamine) in our pantry, but it was all open shelving. I would have liked some pull-out baskets - there are some that can be installed after-market - but right now we just have baskets that we have to pull out (Our pantry is a shoe box so we really didn't have many options for storage - I would do ELFA or something similar if my pantry were larger.

What are you storing in your pantry? Just food, food and appliances? Do you want a counter for commonly used items like a toaster? The best pantry system is the one that allows you to access items quickly and easily. Food items only need about 8-10” of space (think stacks of tinned tomatoes, boxes of cereal etc. ) you don’t want to be rooting around trying to find things, stacked behind deep cupboards & needlessly buying more of what you have buried in your pantry. Measure all of your appliances, serving ware, stock pots etc that you are wanting to store in the space and build a system based on that. Remember that anything above 5’ and below 3’ is not easily accessed without bending or stretching, so plan your “prime” space according to your needs. I think the dimensions you have noted above are all too big(deep). You need room for YOU to bend, reach etc inside the space, more than you need deep shelves that you can’t access. First figure out what you want to store in the space, then tape out the cabinet dimensions on the floor & try it out. Storing things high won’t do you any good if you can’t quickly and easily access them.

I think you were very smart to change the doorswing! It makes a huge impact on how you will use the space. It is fantastic that you will have counter space and drawers, and it makes perfect sense to go up to the ceiling with the cabinets. Excellent choices all around.

If you are ever inspired to post images of your kitchen I would love to see it - the design is so clean. Most of us, myself included, are designing around existing structure. It’s fun to see what one can achieve designing around function. Best of luck with the pantry.
